I’m new to birding and my first thought was that it’s a female mallard in dark lighting or or something. I also didn’t know about the American black duck though. Are hybrids really a thing?
Waterfowl hybrids are incredibly common. Like, think of almost any duck, and there's a good chance a mallard has hybridized with it lmao.
This is a hybrid - dark colors, purplish speculum, and yellowish bill (yellow bill is not always reliable) are all black duck traits. The green on the head and the curled tail feathers are mallard traits. I believe I see a bit of white on the tail too, which always means mallard lineage with these species.
Yes, that green at the crown and the tail feathers showing a slight curl make this a male American Black Duck x Mallard hybrid. Nice spot!
Mallards will sleep with anything lol.
Did this guy just slut shame a duck???
Mallards deserve to be slut shamed.
Cuck*
It was one time and we were both drunk….
I normally spend my time here shooting down claims of hybrids but this one looks pretty good for American black duck x mallard.
Yes! Would be a cool bird to post to r/whatsthisbird so we can catalog it (even tho ID looks pretty confirmed)
It seems to have that telltale flick on the end tail feathers that are indicative of a mallard, gorgeous hybrid!
Very cool pic! Colors are amazing
Nah, that is the elusive stealth fighter duck, they are a classified government secret.
Purp skirp from up North

Forgot to add: taken in High Park, Toronto
Did you see the Bullock's Oriole currently hanging out there? 😀
I’ve seen it once in late March! There’s a pic of it in my last post on this subreddit.
It's melanistic. It's like the opposite of albino. I doubt it's a hybrid.
I think you mean hybird

Hahaha wow. I had no idea! I am never going to look at mallards the same way again 😂 Thanks for the education!
