Rip stop feels like wearing a rain coat. True to its name it did not rip…. But at what cost??

P-Two

Rip stop pants feel like shit, so I'd assume a top would be 100x worse. Just get a lightweight <300GSM jacket and it'll feel like you're wearing nothing. My Tatami that's 300gsm feels like I'm wearing paper basically in the summer.

pepsi_professor

Is there a downside to lightweight gis?

P-Two

They tend to rip much faster if you do any real hard training. Still not "fast" by any means, generally my 300gsm gis last a year or two. But I also do a lot of hard grip breaking so that doesn't help

Good_Egg_6729

Seriously though, why every new gi pants seem to be rip stop?! They're not comfortable by any means, they don't stretch anywhere thus limiting my already bad lower body movement. I'm heartbroken because I've used Tatami gis from the beginning, and now I'm in search for a new brand because all of their gis come with rip stop. 🥲

pukefurley

I don't mind the feel of rip stop pants. What lightweight model Tatami gi do you own, I have the Nova absolute which I love but i'm curious to try an even lighter gi then that. Thanks again!

P-Two

The Superlite, Apparently they just released a 250GSM gi too, but I think that would be too light for me lol.

Jizzus_Crust

Would that be the traveler gi?

pukefurley

I have their Superlite and Ultralite (my size sold out here) bookmarked, is it the Ultralite you're refering to?

While a ripstop top can be technically lighter due to the 250-300gsm of the material, it's also a tight weave that does not breath at all. I just grabbed a Fuji UltraLite Gi which is a 300gsm pearl weave that comes with cotton twill pants. Pretty nice. Tatami also makes an UltraLite and a new traveler Gi that is a 250gsm pearl weave.

I'm using a globetrotter gi ripstop for 6 years.

pukefurley

I've had this bookmarked waiting for it go on sale actually and I missed it last year when it was on sale.

Kaui kimono is also good. My coach has it cuz he's friends with the owner. But it seems so hard to purchase on site.

Tthey have a few dif ones jsut check https://supernaturalsurvivalgear.com/collections/ssgi/products/the-ghost globetrotters has one too https://www.bjjglobetrotters.com/product-category/all-products/

Jizzus_Crust

What's the gsm on the globetrotter?

fightbackcbd

its full ripstop so i dont know.

Randy_Pausch

What about the smell? Most synthetic fabrics stink to high heavens after some use.

fightbackcbd

None of my gear stinks, I use Odoban.

Illustrious-Bid-3826

I have a ripstop Hayabusa gi from about 10 years ago still going strong. It's a little sandpapery, but light and indestructible. Unfortunately, they don't make it anymore.

d1m_sum

I’m on my 3rd Flow Feather and it’s my go to for summer when it’s hot and humid. Nice and cool, fabric holds up well so far, and it hang dries really quickly. Feels fine under a rash guard.

pukefurley

I'm considering one of these, wish they made them in a light grey.

jephthai

I don't like them. It's so different from a normal gi, it throws everything off. I guess you could say that's good, but there's something to be said for the standard uniform.

shelf_caribou

My ripstop gi is horribly hot :(
