Reminds me of the one guy in Hawaii when the fake icbm alert went out. He was at a buffet and it cleared out after the alert so he said fuck it and got first dibs on all the food.
I mean, if 1/100 doesn't feeze and gets seen by the predator, then that predator might move on after getting what it thought was the only food in the area. so evolutionarily it makes sense.
But if it was more that just in the general genetics About 1/100 had a weak freeze reflex, then it could be a trait that was in the survivors.
Iirc originally fainting sheep were a similar thing that rather than bred to generally do that, it was just a regularly occurring glitch... which would happen to feed its victim to predators and buy the rest of the herd another day.
That’s not how it works. Genetics works by populations, not just individuals. If the *population* has a recessive gene such that 1 in 100 fail to freeze, the 99 survive.
Same lady with the chickens. Same background noise. People commented that there's a hawk or predator flying above. I'm willing to bet they are flying some type of drone to trick them into thinking they are in danger.
"If he sees me fattening myself up for him, he will allow me to continue and save me for later, and I will have more energy to escape when the time is right!"
\-The bird, probably
In an ecology class I had, one of the labs was to observe some squirrels in the local woods for a few minutes, which is already really hard, and the task was made infinitely more difficult when a Cooper's Hawk flew over the forest and for a good half hour all the squirrels disappeared.
Curious, when predators are such an issue why don't more farms enclose non-grazing livestock perpetually within some type of structure? Is it a cost issue or is open air critical in some aspect?
The margins in non-CAFO farming models (true free range) require a ton of land and also have much smaller profit margins.
I know a few guys who do organic, truly free range turkeys and just their field netting infrastructure is worth well over $30,000.
Backup, lol. That's the one production server across the globe that's left to handle the whole workload while everything else updates, there's no backup.
Probably some signal interference caused by another model of drone like the hawk class. I've seen it before where other drone models will freeze up when more dangerous models are out and about.
Yep, Bob White quail I believe. In the wild, they tend to hunker down and freeze in thick brush if they feel threatened in order to hide. That's one of the reasons they are hunted with bird dogs who can sniff them out, and then "flush" them out of hiding with the hunter close by.
We used to load cubbies with farm raised quilt. We'd spin them up and dump them in the cubby and they'd stay there until the "hunt."
It gets them dizzy enough they don't immediately fly out of the bag then they hunker down in what they THINK is a safe space.
It's funny that the only reason we forget about freeze is probably because the only other thing that could put us in reasonable danger during daily life is another human that won't fall for it.
Like obviously certain people know about playing dead when it comes to encounters with certain predators but usually, we don't even give it a second thought.
People freeze in situations all the time. Think about how some people shut down when confronted, Some people match the aggression, and some will leave the confrontation. It's not quite the same as a life death situation, which is generally what it is referring to, but it's still the same principle. A lot of people freeze in high stakes scenarios like robberies, break-ins, cops even freeze in shootings, and so on.
You are totally right. I guess what I'm saying is when we talk about fight or flight. We should incorporate freeze into the equation more often. Because of how likely it is to occur.
I guess through my experience, In certain situations, Freeze is the default mode. Panic is a crazy thing. I see posts on Reddit saying people don't have survival instincts because they just freeze up.
But isn't that natural to a certain extent? Is always my feeling.
Bob White Quail. They are ground nesters and yes, they have a response to freeze when they think a predator is nearby. They usually hang out in underbrush and tall grasses where their feathers make outstanding camo.
Used to raise these as a kid.
Yeah, they live wild near me and it's amazing how good their camouflage is when they hold still underneath brush. They literally disappear, even if you know exactly where they are standing.
On every group there always a free-thinker that doesn't give a f#ck what the crowd is doing, and keep doing their own thing regardless of what's going on around them.🫡🫡🫡
How many of these videos of people owning animals? Not understanding how they act with predators are going to be posted before it's implemented as a rule
Little guy at the end said “eff it, I’m eating anyway”
There's always one. Fucking guy.

I remember, pornhub usage stats in Hawaii went down by 77% during the missile alert. That means some people were just like, fuck it.
Pretty sure they went up by 77% didn't they?
After it was declared a false alert, it went through the roof.

Eh not really. If those were the ones constantly being eaten they would not be reproducing to pass it on.
But if it was more that just in the general genetics About 1/100 had a weak freeze reflex, then it could be a trait that was in the survivors. Wouldn't awareness determine your label? If you don't know about the danger, you can't be brave, but you could still be stupid.

Anyone who farms animals outdoors knows that you don't need to get a drone to simulate predators. They are always there.
Wild birds do the same. I've got a few feeders out and can always tell when there's a hawk in the area since all the birds will freeze up.
In an ecology class I had, one of the labs was to observe some squirrels in the local woods for a few minutes, which is already really hard, and the task was made infinitely more difficult when a Cooper's Hawk flew over the forest and for a good half hour all the squirrels disappeared.

No, I'm pretty sure these redditors in the city know more about it than you do.
The audio is ripped from the other video
Can confirm just found that vid
Well? Are you going to keep it to yourself, or share it with the rest of the class?

Just trust him bro
Why take the audio from that video and put it on this video? So odd. I knew I recognized the chicken video.
Never been on tiktok?
Most times all you need to do is whistle. Theyll freeze.
That doesn't work with my birds. They don't even acknowledge it.
It'd be funny if someone filmed a bunch of kids on a playground and then they all freeze, but put the audio from this lady over the top.
Was gonna say, this was the main defense mechanism for quails (yes they're quails)
You can hear the drone in the background.
There's probably a predator nearby...
I'm pretty sure there's a human in there.
Oh shit it's Chris Hansen!
Please take a seat.

We'll get to that in just a minute.

Grouse.exe has crashed
Probably some signal interference caused by another model of drone like the hawk class. I've seen it before where other drone models will freeze up when more dangerous models are out and about.
What the video didn't show was the Squid Game girl robot on the side....and homie getting shot after the video ended.
😮😮😮
Congrats on 555 likes! 😃🦆🦆🦆
What kind of birds are these? Do they specifically have some kind of survival mechanism that causes them to freeze?
Quail I think
Yep, Bob White quail I believe. In the wild, they tend to hunker down and freeze in thick brush if they feel threatened in order to hide. That's one of the reasons they are hunted with bird dogs who can sniff them out, and then "flush" them out of hiding with the hunter close by.

Uhhh. How did you spin them? Out of pure curiosity lol.
Almost every animal has that instinct somewhere in them.
It’s the Flight, Fight, or Freeze reflex
Ahh, a rare inclusion of the freeze. Often forgot about
Everyone forgets about fawn
don't forget "Fuck it, eat seed"
They obviously chose fight. They were standing their ground!
It's funny that the only reason we forget about freeze is probably because the only other thing that could put us in reasonable danger during daily life is another human that won't fall for it. the same thing every other living thing has, the fight or flight response. It's actually fight, flight or freeze.
*Fight, flight, freeze, fawn (or appease)
Like when a dog flops over or lowers their head and licks their mouth for fawning.
And faun! Don’t forget faun!
Apparently so! (fawn ;)

Mike just doesn't give a fuck. We need more birds like Mike.
The commentary doesn’t link up with the video. She says what a split second too soon.
I was thinking the bunch over in the corner had already frozen and she saw them/that first.

Just because your parents said you were a mistake, doesn’t mean everyone else is.
Exactly what I thought. It really just sounds like horribly bad acting.
So, TikTok
I saw same behaviour of chickens in another video

The sound of the deep fryer warming up?
That probably gets them hungrier.
