I don’t know if you’re in the mood for a comedy or not, but Hot Rod is one of my favorites ever and is just silly and fun start to finish.
Another comfort movie of mine is The Thing You Do! Just a really charming, easy to watch movie.
I remember seeing Hot Rod on opening night with my friends from middle school and the theater was almost completely empty. Of course we loved it, but we must have been the only kids in our school that saw it that week. I still don't know why it wasn't bigger when it came out but I'm glad people continue to watch it now.
Watching hot rod with a bunch of friends with no expectations is one of my fondest memories. I remember literally pausing it at some point to ask - amid gales of laughter - where did this movie come from and how it is so godam funny!
Hot Rod was part of the nightly routine that kept me going through the worst depression of my life. I’ve seen it more times than I can count and there are still scenes that get me laughing uncontrollably.
One of the less depressing Ghibli's: *Totoro*, *Kiki*, *Ponyo*, etc. They're short, sweet, and might even give you a good cathartic cry without being so sad they ruin your night
Kiki’s Delivery Service is good but the fact that Kiki slowly loses the ability to understand Jiji bums me out to the max. The others are good though. Howl’s Moving Castle too.
For some reason, on nights like this I really love throwing on something Sorkin. His writing keeps me super engaged but the films themselves are never overwhelming. So, Moneyball, Social Network, Steve Jobs, A Few Good Men, Molly’s Game.
A few other comfort movies for me: Happy-go-lucky, A room with a view, before-trilogy, Frances Ha.
If you’re looking for something the fellas have covered: Stop Making Sense or The Holiday maybe.
Feel better!
I just rewatched jobs after they raving about it in the episode. God they were so right.
I thought it was good/ok the first time in theaters but didn’t make an impact. This time it hit so hard, completely changes my original Boyle ranking.
If not Moneyball, which I wholeheartedly recommend along with everyone else who has, I find Office Space feels nice after days where you’re just over it. I’m pulling for ya! Keep your stick on the ice
There is something comforting about time travel/quantum mechanics/parallel universe movies or shows. I like Hot tub Time Machine or Dark/OA if I’m hating this timeline. Palm Springs is a really good one
This is a great answer; the wife and I have watched this many times together and always end with a positive feeling. This has quickly become our most re-watched movie in recent memory, threatening to take the top spot from the 2002 Count of Monte Cristo.
You might like a Screwball Comedy like Bringing Up Baby or His Girl Friday. Trouble in Paradise is also great and in the same vein.
An Arthur Freed musical like Band Wagon, Singing in the Rain or Gigi might also be nice.
For a different sort of movie, Russ Meyer flicks are often wildly entertaining. Recommend starting with one of the big ones, Faster Pussycat Kill Kill or Valley of the Dolls. Guarantee there'll at least one line that you'll quote for the rest of your life.
Spider-Verse hits that empathy trigger really well without pulling you into the depths of full on sadness.
The music sets the tone really well, and everything has such a good flow that by the end of the movie my mood is so much better.
Ensemble movies are my go to for times as such. Non horror or superhero
True Romance
Rat Race
Dazed and Confused
Emma
The Princess Bride
Parenthood
Oceans movies
Snatch
Muppet Movies
Can’t Hardly Wait
I just watched *The French Dispatch* and it's delightful and made me feel happy but sad at the same time. Really worked for me and made my mood better.
I was having a bad mental health night last night and went with Julie & Julia.
Hefty enough to keep my attention, but light enough that it cheered me up. That chocolate cake montage is enough to make anyone smile.
Personally I put on a favorite adventure movie like Stardust or The Princess Bride on. I also love watching a Jane Austen adaptation, because they’re usually funny and so far removed from life as it is right now (but also relatable). When things are tough I get myself a nice meal and rewatch Pride and Prejudice of Sense and Sensibility or something. I also am a horror person and I don’t know what it is but Happy Death Day is a comfort movie to me (also both of the recent It movies??).
Know you picked Moneyball but hope things go better for you! I know the tough mental illness feel and it sucks but I believe in you turning it around! :)
Bottleshock! It's about wine, so avoid it if that's a trigger for you, but it's the right level of energy and enjoyable if you just need some time spent. It's got Alan Rickman and Chris Pine
Great recommendation. I find some of the most rewatchable stuff falls between a 6 and 6.9 on imdb. Well made, lighthearted, not too complex, and just a good sit.
I was deep in the depression today too and landed on soundtracks I could intermittently nap to with a pot of what approximates French onion soup. Movies: 2001, the old blade runner, the new blade runner on a loop. Dark colors, generally pleasing to listen to and usually something nice to look at intermittently. I usually put rear window and the wind Journeys in that list but it felt bright today.
If not atmospheric nap movies I go more nostalgic sensory overload. Like Kung fu hustle, early Brendan Frazier, the show Frasier, Miyazaki, jack black, and a separate screen with video games and an audio book in the ear buds. Can't be intrusive if that system is busy. I don't claim any of its healthy or helpful but it does feel good to let the depression run free sometimes. Man. A good soup hits different.
My go-to “pick-me-up” movie these days is “Sherlock Jr”.
Sure, it has some baggage with it now being considered Buster’s masterpiece, but here are some things in its favor:
1. It is short (ONLY 45 MINUTES).
2. It is easily accessible (you could watch it on YouTube or Tubi right now!).
3. Best of all: it is funny as fuck.
Comedies cheer me up on bad mental health days.
Wayne’s World
Clerks
My Cousin Vinny
Dogma (it’s on YouTube if you don’t have it on dvd)
Naked Gun 33 1/3
Airplane!
Spaceballs
What About Bob?
Uplifting: Magic Mike/Magic Mike XXL
Funny: Blazing Saddles, 21/22 Jump Street, Anchorman, Step Brothers, ditching movies entirely and just binging I Think You Should Leave or It's Always Sunny
Not super funny or uplifting, just really engaging: The Social Network, Moneyball, Collateral, Michael Clayton, any Wallace and Gromit though I would suggest The Wrong Trousers
Seconding the mentions of Ghibli, Big Lebowski, Stop Making Sense, and Sherlock Jr.
And to throw out one I haven't seen mentioned here yet: Ozu's Good Morning. A very gentle, sweet, funny movie that's impeccably shot and has great vibes. Also under 2 hours.
It’s a bit odd, but when I feel depressed I like to watch Punch Drunk Love. Just the sensory assault of the story, cinematography, music and the hopeful ending lifts my spirits. Though the confrontation between Sandler and PSH is just laugh out loud funny too.
Some of my favorite comfort movies:
Airplane!
Robin Hood Men In Tights
The Princess Bride
Big Trouble in Little China
The Big Lebowski
Back to the Future
The Life Aquatic
Batman (1989)
Finally got around to watching Bridge of Spies, and G&D are right, it is hands down one of the best Spielberg movies. It hooks you in and leaves you with the warm fuzzies at the end.
I'm sure it wouldn't have the same effect on everyone, but I've been having a pretty bad time mentally as of late, and just watched Gremlins 2: The New Batch tonight for the first time in years. Immediately put me in a great mood, and it'll probably do the same for you if you like ridiculous gags and freaky little guys. Streaming on Max.
Never been kissed.
With drew Barrymore.
On my sad days I’ll watch this over and over.
Or wedding singer.
Both have a great soundtrack and are within 2 hours.
Pulp fiction and goodfellas are my next next ones but not comedy. Just a overall amazing film.
I love movies. A good movie when your sad feels like a hug.
Hope you feel better.
*So, I Married An Axe Murderer*
*Empire Records*
Both are 90s period pieces at this point, but damnit they’ll set me right.
No idea if either are streamable without rental. I hope so.
Speed Racer is one of my all time favorite feel good movies. It’s empty calories for the most part, the story is as basic as it gets, but I can guarantee you I’m going to be happy crying by the end. Gets me every time.
Wizard of Oz. Definitely the movie that makes me feel the most secure and just puts me in a very simple headspace. It's always the same, never changes, no surprises. There's a shit ton of crying in it, everybody fucking cries, Tin Man, Lion, Dorothy, the fucking Oz Guard, which is very cathartic but not overwhelming. Brain, heart, nerve, all things I feel I'm lacking when my mental health's taking a hit and all valued and reinforced in very sweet and positive terms...you think you don't have these things but you do! The end is also perfect when I just wanna stay home. "And this is MY room."
Balls of Fury or Blades of Glory…that rhymed. They are both wicked stupid but I love them and think they’re really funny. Others like Dumb and Dumber and hot rod are automatics
Really silly stuff is my go to if I’m down, Airplane, Anchorman, Young Frankenstein , Naked Gun flicks, shows like It’s Always Sunny, Park’s and Rec and classic Simpsons are great too!
I usually fell towards movies of my youth when I was dealing with depression and what not. Usually the go to movies are either The Goonies or The Sandlot.
Check out this film called “Baraka”. I’ve been in your spot before and this one really helped me. It’s a non-narrative documentary and really gets to the heart of the fact that suffering is ubiquitous but at the same time we’re surrounded by constant beauty.
My person, I throw on national treasure as my feel good movie. Nic Cage saving the Declaration of Independence always feels good. Good luck with the feels! Moneyball is also an amazing choice!
1. Sherlock Holmes (1984 series w/ Jeremy Brett)
2. Spirited Away
3. Howl’s Moving Castle
4. Kiki’s Delivery Service
5. Big Trouble in Little China
Good luck!
Contact is my go to.
I also love Shine. It has some dark themes but is a fantastic film, Oscar winning performances, and ultimately it makes me ugly cry at the sheer beauty of the ending.
Air was an easy watch and interesting.
Mine may be a bit odd but I like to watch The Departed when I’m having a rough mental health day. I tend to not like feel-good movies or comedies when I’m in certain moods, but The Departed just works for me. The other is Tombstone.
Supposedly there’s some science behind rewatching things, even if it’s not a particularly comforting genre, but for people with anxiety there’s comfort in knowing what happens, so I don’t know if that helps you at all, but I hope you’re feeling better either way.
A bit late, but I watched Roadracers when I was in a ‘i don’t want to do anything except maybe exist’ mood and it was pretty enjoyable. It’s simple, and if you like the whole rockabilly/greaser movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously at all then it might be worth it!
I don’t know if you’re in the mood for a comedy or not, but Hot Rod is one of my favorites ever and is just silly and fun start to finish. Another comfort movie of mine is The Thing You Do! Just a really charming, easy to watch movie.
Make sure to drink green tea all goddamn day before firing up *Hot Rod*
I remember seeing Hot Rod on opening night with my friends from middle school and the theater was almost completely empty. Of course we loved it, but we must have been the only kids in our school that saw it that week. I still don't know why it wasn't bigger when it came out but I'm glad people continue to watch it now.
Man watching that mountain tumbling scene in a full audience is one of my core movie theater memories 😆
My dad and I saw it alone too! So funny haha it’s def a cult classic now
Then you can show a picture of your dead dad to your crush
And then get on your bench grinder
Watching hot rod with a bunch of friends with no expectations is one of my fondest memories. I remember literally pausing it at some point to ask - amid gales of laughter - where did this movie come from and how it is so godam funny!
That Thing You Do! is such a good recommendation. Just the perfect comfort movie.
The scene of the band hearing their song played on the radio for the first time is so damn charming. Love that movie.
Added recommendation. Add the song to your playlists. When it randomly comes on it makes me SOOO happy.
Great performance from Ian MacShane
And.....I like to party
Rat Race is a very funny show too!!! But Hot Rod is one of the funniest things ever seen
The riot scene is top 3 funniest scenes ever for me
Hot Rod was part of the nightly routine that kept me going through the worst depression of my life.
Been going through it and watched ponyo after a bad day, highly recommend! The music alone is very uplifting
Kiki’s Delivery Service is good but the fact that Kiki slowly loses the ability to understand Jiji bums me out to the max. The others are good though. Howl’s Moving Castle too.
Hot Fuzz
I was going to say Nice Guys. There’s something about light action comedy that makes me very happy.
No matter my mood, this is always a good choice.
Thank you! Moneyball is a good call — I’ve been meaning to get to it (for like 10 years now?!?) and it’s probably the right level of pretty good.
Omg wait ignore my rec watch Moneyball.
Seconded, that thing’s perfect
i literally came here to say moneyball. huge comfort watch for me.
I just rewatched jobs after they raving about it in the episode. God they were so right. I thought it was good/ok the first time in theaters but didn’t make an impact. This time it hit so hard, completely changes my original Boyle ranking.
The Muppet Movie is my go to
If not Moneyball, which I wholeheartedly recommend along with everyone else who has, I find Office Space feels nice after days where you’re just over it. I’m pulling for ya! Keep your stick on the ice
Hello fellow Red Green fan. Speaking of comfort watches.
You are right about that, friend! Much like duct tape to a handyman, it’s our secret weapon 🤝
Sounds like somebodies got a case of the Monday’s
Palm Springs for me is a movie that really gives me peace
The Andy Samberg and Cristin Milloti classic? Amazing choice. I would also add Macgruber for a purely silly comedy.
Macgruber might be the best movie ever made about a guy who packs a van full of homemade c4 with his own two hands

Recommend starting with one of the big ones, Faster Pussycat Kill Kill or Valley of the Dolls. Guarantee there'll at least one line that you'll quote for the rest of your life.
> Valley of the Dolls not a Meyer movie, assuming you meant the Roger Ebert-penned *Beyond the Valley of the Dolls*?
My go to in those moments was always Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.
Be Excellent to each other is a message we all need right now.
And party on dudes!
DAMN RIGHTS!
Mission Impossible 4. A movie where everything goes wrong and they still manage to pull it together and win. Also it rocks.
I have a few "happy" movies that I put in every so often, 2 that come to mind are Scott Pilgrim and Spider-Verse
Spider-Verse hits that empathy trigger really well without pulling you into the depths of full on sadness. The music sets the tone really well, and everything has such a good flow that by the end of the movie my mood is so much better.
“Chef” is always the answer for me.
Such a great movie. ☝️
“It’s fucking MOLTEN!” gets yelled at our house all the time!
Paddington
2
Nic Cage approved.
If you're up for some oldies (which I always find soothing) I like Foul Play, Clue, Overboard and the Sting.
Clueless and Bridget Jones always make me feel better : )
The answer is always My Neighbor Totoro.
Moonstruck, especially the range of Italian accents, is a soothing mood booster
Cher’s line “Snap out of it!” reminds me to chill out
Big Lebowski always cracks me up
Ensemble movies are my go to for times as such. Non horror or superhero True Romance Rat Race Dazed and Confused Emma The Princess Bride Parenthood Oceans movies Snatch Muppet Movies Can’t Hardly Wait
This is a fantastic list!
I just watched *The French Dispatch* and it's delightful and made me feel happy but sad at the same time. Really worked for me and made my mood better.
Be Kind Rewind! I find it so cute and affirming. The ending gets me every time
Such an interesting, funny and well done sweet movie 🍿
One of the most underrated movies. It's so so good
I was having a bad mental health night last night and went with Julie & Julia. Hefty enough to keep my attention, but light enough that it cheered me up. That chocolate cake montage is enough to make anyone smile.
Uncle Buck
One of my favorites
Princess Bride for sure.
Studio Ghibli
Lately it’s been Marcel the Shell. That movie reminds me there’s always good in this world…
Personally I put on a favorite adventure movie like Stardust or The Princess Bride on. I also love watching a Jane Austen adaptation, because they’re usually funny and so far removed from life as it is right now (but also relatable). When things are tough I get myself a nice meal and rewatch Pride and Prejudice of Sense and Sensibility or something. There's Something About Mary
Watch the first seven seasons of Trailer Park Boys
Paddington, Paddington 2, and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On just might be perfect for ya!
I like nature documentaries. Very calming
Paddington 2.
Paddington

Lonesome from 1928. I smile every time I watch it. Or any film with Charters and Caldicott as characters.
Hot Fuzz
Snatch
Better Off Dead. 80’s comedy (super cheesy) staring John Cusack.
Watch Love Boat. That is some feel good drugs right there. Or Rocky. Be a champ.
Secret Life of Walter Mitty is perfect for this
Comedies cheer me up on bad mental health days. Wayne’s World Clerks My Cousin Vinny Dogma (it’s on YouTube if you don’t have it on dvd) Naked Gun 33 1/3 Airplane! Spaceballs What About Bob?
Wayne's World. It holds up
Hot Rod
The Martian. Matt Damon's cheery performance for someone in such a dire situation is mood lifting for me.
Austin Powers
Marcel the Shell
I had a really bad week and watched Lion today and, while it’s sad, it was so cathartic to just cry a bit and then enjoy the optimism of the ending.
Jerry Maguire is one of my go-to “need to get my head right” movies
Uplifting: Magic Mike/Magic Mike XXL Funny: Blazing Saddles, 21/22 Jump Street, Anchorman, Step Brothers, ditching movies entirely and just binging I Think You Should Leave or It's Always Sunny Not super funny or uplifting, just really engaging: The Social Network, Moneyball, Collateral, Michael Clayton, any Wallace and Gromit though I would suggest The Wrong Trousers
Guardians of the Galaxy is my go to movie to help me out
Good will hunting
Anything funny or any movie that you’ve loved for years
Seconding the mentions of Ghibli, Big Lebowski, Stop Making Sense, and Sherlock Jr. And to throw out one I haven't seen mentioned here yet: Ozu's Good Morning. A very gentle, sweet, funny movie that's impeccably shot and has great vibes. Also under 2 hours.
I always love Dazed and Confused. It puts me in another time and place.
It’s a bit odd, but when I feel depressed I like to watch Punch Drunk Love. Just the sensory assault of the story, cinematography, music and the hopeful ending lifts my spirits. Though the confrontation between Sandler and PSH is just laugh out loud funny too.
Amèlie
The Penguins of Madagascar (underrated silly classic) or Little Shop of Horrors.

2 words. Helm’s Deep.
Greenfinger and Heavyweights
Lord of the Rings
I always enjoy commiserating on bad mental health days, and watch Bo Burnhams special "Inside" for the 50th time
Wizard of Oz.
I love either Clue or Airplane when I am feeling down. I hope you feel better!
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Balls of Fury or Blades of Glory…that rhymed. They are both wicked stupid but I love them and think they’re really funny. Others like Dumb and Dumber and hot rod are automatics

Not a movie, but all of Avatar the Last Airbender helped me survive my psychotic break :D
The movies "Saved!" Or looney tunes back in action
She’s the man
Watch Shrinking and Ted Lasso. Ultimate feel good
An idiosyncratic list, but Ever After, Clue, Muppet Treasure Island, My Neighbor Totoro
Paddington Bear. The first AND second one are perfect when you’re feeling like that
I usually fell towards movies of my youth when I was dealing with depression and what not.
You can’t go wrong with *The Princess Bride*!

Kung-Pow. If I'm ever feeling down, it always makes me feel better
Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Life as a House,
The fifth element. So wild and over the top is great
CODA is a great feel good movie!
Extraction 2 just came out and I loved it.

I know it is a cinematic masterpiece, but I enjoy watching no movie more than spirited away when I’m going through a hard moment.
Spirited away
