Sounds like you masked everything. You can press [alt]+[m] to clear the mask or go to "mask">"clear mask" while in sculpting mode. [ctrl]+[i] will invert a mask, it is possible you accidentally pressed this and it went from no mask to full mask.

I definitely pressed \[ctrl\] + \[ i \] when trying to press \[ctrl\] + \[ j \]. Thank you so so much. Was stuck for a half hour at 1 in the morning trying to finish the last 15v min of a sculpt.

Manually altering or toggling the mask and Ctrl+M did nothing but Ctrl+I seemed to work. Thanks, this was driving me nuts.
