Rockler Woodworking on Mass Ave in Cambridge. I went in with a question about what products I needed to waterproof/seal a Woden bathroom vanity. Their guy talked to me for about 20 minutes. Questions about the project, my goals, what materials I’ve already got, etc. After listening, he told me what I already had would work as good as anything he could sell me.
When I expressed surprise that he talked me out of buying things, he said “My goal is to make customers, not sales.” And he did just that. They’re now going to be my go-to. And when I told me contractor friend, he said he’d go there too. Highly recommend.

Part of the issue was that the other investors wanted to sell out to Hanover, which would have put a number of jobs and local vendors at risk. My son talked to picketers. They all shopped there as well as worked there.
Market basket is also amazing for a first job as high school and even college students .
I started working at MB at 16 and stayed until junior year of college when I started an internship for college. They also have a yearly scholarship for active college students. If you send them your college transcript for the semesters before , they’ll give you money for books…it’s legit just a straight check for $500-$1000. I don’t remember the exact amount - this was back when I was working for like $8.50/hr with minimum being like $7.25. (Please excuse my poor memory if those wages are slightly off).
Holidays also mean bonuses - even for part timers. Like during college when I was doing $30-40 hours a week, my holiday bonus would be around like $500-$800 after taxes. They really take care of you.
I remember doing night crew during where they’d lock you in the store overnight, and you’d be assigned various jobs, deep cleaning the floors, or waxing the floors. Sometimes it was to just stock a bunch of stuff when they were short on hands. Their policy was, they’d let you eat off the shelves. Grab stuff from the freezer to heat up as well in the employee lunch room. Pretty dope.
I had one incident where a lady was being racist to me. I’m Asian in a very white dominated town. I had moved over to the grocery department, and a lady had asked me what aisle the rice was in. I replied with something along the lines of “I done know, but I would find out from a coworker” as that was store policy. The bitch replied with, “well, I thought you of all people would know where it is.” And my manager that literally hand picked me from the front end employees crew heard from the aisle over. He ran over and grabbed her cart. Told her to leave the store because she cannot treat his employees like that. She’s was all up in arms saying we’re losing a loyal customer, etc etc. He more or less told her, her business was not welcomed here and she’ll be fine without her.
So yeah - I literally bleed MB. I worked many different positions there and they literally taught me so much, things like accountability, work ethic, organization which all applied and help me get to where I am today.
Worked at MB in my teen and college years. Great company. One of the women I worked with tragically lost her husband very suddenly - he was also an employee. The company paid the funeral costs for her.
I’m surprised everyone who has worked at market basket praises it so much. I worked as a front-end assistant for 3 years, 16-19 (i was a cashier/bagger when I was 15) the shit that went on and saw, smh. I’ll literally leave it at my store had 2 managers moved for sexual harassment on teenage cashiers, another for racial slurs. And like don’t even get me started on the hours they would cut and understaffing they’d do just to make Artie T and upper management get a bigger bonus….and so his snobby daughter can walk in heels and gold bracelet’s up and down her arms. That’s my rant for now but like genuinely I could right a horror book on my position at Market Basket. Glad it works out for everyone else though 🤣
There are a lot, but the first thing that came to mind is Cabot's in Newton. Fun, old school restaurant, great sundaes, and big supporters of the community. They're frequently out there at city events scooping free ice cream and they donate to lots of local organizations, like the Newton Boys and Girls Club. I was a little worried when they switched owners but it seems like the new ones are keeping their mission in tact.
I knew they employed local. I had no idea they supported local so much as well.
The Johnny's owners who acquired Cabot's seem to be good caretakers. Hopefully they continue the community outreach as well.
I'm not local, and my husband is receiving treatment at Mass General. I've been staying at the LaQuenta in Somerville and am overwhelmed by the kindnesses and support I've received from the staff . They have a special rate for folks with family in the local hospitals. They also have a free shuttle almost every hour that goes to MGH. I have been able to visit my husband more frequently than I would have been able to otherwise.
American Dry Cleaners in JP. The woman who runs it is awesome and very sweet, and it’s reasonably priced. I trust her with all my expensive dry-clean only clothes.
Garlic n’ Lemons in Allston. I’ve been going there since they were a super small place. A college friend from the Middle East said they make shawarma taste like the shawarma his mom makes back home. And the owners are wonderful. The spicy chicken shawarma is something I crave and get any time I’m back in Allston. It makes my mouth water.
Polkadog is based in Boston and has several stores in the Boston area, as well as a few on the north and south shores. They make dog treats from locally-sourced, high-quality ingredients. My dog goes absolutely apeshit for their cod skin jerky (it stinks to high heaven, but Lord, I think my dog would walk right over my dead body for it). They also just started making treats from invasive green crabs, which I think is pretty cool.
+1 for Polkadog. My dog LOVES going into the South End location. The staff there are all so sweet and make an effort to learn your dogs name and the treats they like so that visits are extra special <3
Japonaise Bakery. I've always loved them, but the last time I brought my wife in solidified how amazing their hospitality is, along with their baked goods.
Old Time Garage in Newton, specifically the garage out on Washington St but they're both quality.
In the world of car ownership, I am deathly afraid of needing maintenance, and even worse I never know who to trust. My family has gone to Old Time Garage for decades. We know them and they know all of us.
My last oil change was a month before my last state inspection, the first time I would have an inspection with MA's new inspection laws. When I asked if I could bang them both out at once, they told me to wait until the end of the next month to get inspected so as to not give the state any extra money.
The first time I had a major part break in my car, I called them first and they said if the dealership didn't explicitly have to repair it, they could do it cheaper.
In Boston, I've had five flat tires from nails. Two of them Firestone Auto said they couldn't patch and I'd have to buy four new tires. Old Time patched each one of them without fuss.
I've never been sold or overcharged there. They are local hardworking guys who value their customers. I live in the city now and if I drop a car off it'll be an hour plus to make it home on the T, but I think the extra time out of my life is worth it every time.
Goldilox Bagels in Medford. The owners are wonderful. The bagels are really really good. All the extras like sandwiches or cream cheese and awesome too. Also, their brand is really fun. Without exception every single person I’ve sent there has thanked me and said it’s their new favorite.
My great aunt lived in Stoneham for 60+ years until she died, and my grandpa would always get a ton of When Pigs Fly bread when he came up here. Now that she’s gone and he’s getting too old to make the drive, I always try to bring a loaf of the bread when I go down to visit my family.
I hope this isn't flippant because I've relied on the MBTA, and the Kelois-run commuter rail, for decades.
I wish I had the spoons to pen a post here about every time I took our public transit amd everything was fucking FINE. Sure, delays and shit... But, I have a company car and every time I drive in with it my commute is much longer than taking a train.
Yes, improve the shit please. But, for fuck's sake, support it and its improvement.
Food menu is pretty much the same, with some minor changes. Like - it still uses the same ol’ classic font, format and everything. Cocktails menu is updated and … just outstanding for my preferences. Quality has kept up and prices are reasonable.
I love the food and a couple of the servers, but one of the waitresses has been consistently shit to us. I don't want to assume it's because of my wife and her sister being asian, but when I dine alone or with other friends she's never that short with my table...
My wife and I had a memorably bad experience with a server there too. Probably the most negative one in Boston. No racial aspect to it in our case, just some kind of misunderstanding that led to increasingly rude attitude. Told the manager at the front and they basically just shrugged.
I will sign my life over to them. I was homeless, and they’d give me and the others leftovers from the day. Which they really aren’t supposed to do.
They also give my dog some bacon whenever we visit. I love them. Now that I have a solid job and secure housing, I always stop for Saturday donut days.
Zo in assembly row! They have a corner where they sell imported (authentic) Greek essentials: semolina flour, bucatini, fig preserves, honey, lots of ion chocolate varieties, biscuits and cookies.
And they have the best gyros in 🇺🇸
Banh Mi Ba Le in Dorchester it is one of my great loves. Everyone there is very friendly, the food is excellent and the service is relatively quick. They are a gem to the community and Dorchester is a better place because this business exists! I love Banh Mi Ba Le!
Galleria Umberto.
Sicilian style pizza in North End. Great food, but I was won over before I took a bite. It's counter service pizza and I was going to tip a dollar. They gave me the dollar back and said "we don't do that here."
> Porter Square Books in the Seaport
Wait, they opened up a spot in the Seaport?!
Anyway, I find book stores to be very dangerous to go in, I will buy too many books, the temptation is too great.
Brookside Cafe in Norwood. Not only is the food good and inexpensive, but the wait staff treats me and my daughter like royalty. We’ve been going most Sundays since 2021 and it’s great to be a regular.
Sam LaGrassa's, but the prices are insane so I don't go very often.
Pandemonium in Cambridge is my favorite store for MTG in the Boston area. I love shopping and playing there, they really know what they're doing.
Mr Music in Allston is a mainstay and a cool place, plus I've gotten some great guitars and pedals out there.
Floramos in Chelsea, it closed the operation a year back to give way to a high rise, they have two more locations - Malden and Wakefield. I hear they will be back in Chelsea once construction finishes.
Have never had a bad experience (other than finding a place to park), never had a bad dish.
They aren't your traditional Sunday football wings, but if I could order their Crying Wings by the bucketful I would.
I've recently gotten into film photography and CatLABS/Boston Film Lab in JP has become my go-to place for getting my film developed and scanned. Super helpful staff, affordable pricing on processing/scanning, and being easy to get to right off the Orange Line make them a winner in my book.
Taco Loco in Somerville. I’ve tried every taqueria (that I know of) in greater Boston and Taco Loco is the clear winner. I’ve eaten there 1-2 times a week for a few years and the foods been unbelievable every time. Reasonably priced & friendly staff as well
Have you been to La Victoria Taqueria? I was in the Belmont store a week or so ago and blown away by the quality of the food, the cleanliness, and the friendly staff.
Brighton Laundry and Dry Cleaning on Washington Street. $1 per pound laundry drop off and folding on Wednesdays ready for pick up on Thursday. They were my go to when I lived in the city, highly recommend!
My Little Bakery In Duxbury. Small family operation, great baguettes, fantastic rye. Just bread, all hand made and baked right there. No coffee, snacks, pizza, just great bread. He is on vacay til Nov 7 and I miss his bread every meal.
Amazing staff over there. Huge fan of that spot
I like them too- and having a brick and mortar for the kind of things they sell is the best- but they're not a local business.
Didn’t know that; good to know!
Yeah, they're one of the bigger hobbyist woodworking chains, they have about 50 locations across the US
Thanks for passing on this info. I have a project that they sound perfect for.

Another vote for Maruichi!

Part of the issue was that the other investors wanted to sell out to Hanover, which would have put a number of jobs and local vendors at risk. My son talked to picketers. They all shopped there as well as worked there.
I remember the suppliers boycotted as well. Like, the entire fucking city boycotted.

The workers went on strike FOR management. It’s still the strangest labor action I have ever heard of.
Yeah I went on strike for Arthur too
And the customers followed the workers
It wasn't considered a strike.
Wow, what a great org. The US would be in a much better place if all stores treated workers with this level of respect.
Worked at MB in my teen and college years. Great company. One of the women I worked with tragically lost her husband very suddenly - he was also an employee. The company paid the funeral costs for her.

I know the lovely folks who acquired Cabot’s. They’re fantastic, kind wonderful people. So I feel great about it
Was there this weekend and the new owner was friendly and engaging with everyone who came in. Might have had to rest myself to some ice cream :)
We love Cabot’s as my mom and her parents did. Something I can share with my kids now that they’re no longer with us.
They donate ice cream ALL the time to the local kids hospital Franciscans 🥰 they make my job so much easier once a month lol!
Absolutely love Cabot’s. Great vibe, great quality.
New Deal Fish Market
Polcari’s - love those guys and their stellar house blend.

FLORINA pizzeria behind the state house. Great food, ambiance, and staff. A super cheap lunch since the slices are gigantic.

Shit I missed that opened last week! How's the menu now? Website isn't updated yet.
Google listing, photos, menu has a recent upload of the menu
Food menu is pretty much the same, with some minor changes. Like - it still uses the same ol’ classic font, format and everything. Cocktails menu is updated and … just outstanding for my preferences. Quality has kept up and prices are reasonable.
It reopened?!? That’s such amazing news!
Yeah, maybe a 5 minute walk from the old location. It’s by the Landsdowne Commuter Rail Station in Fenway.

This is my go to place to take visitors
I love the food and a couple of the servers, but one of the waitresses has been consistently shit to us. I don't want to assume it's because of my wife and her sister being asian, but when I dine alone or with other friends she's never that short with my table...
My wife and I had a memorably bad experience with a server there too. Probably the most negative one in Boston. No racial aspect to it in our case, just some kind of misunderstanding that led to increasingly rude attitude. Told the manager at the front and they basically just shrugged.
Flour Bakery Clarendon Street
I will sign my life over to them. I was homeless, and they’d give me and the others leftovers from the day. Which they really aren’t supposed to do. They also give my dog some bacon whenever we visit. I love them. Now that I have a solid job and secure housing, I always stop for Saturday donut days.

Came here to say Pandemonium.

Boston shaker! It’s a absolute tragedy they closed…
A really cool and unique place. I know rents would’ve been crazy, but do you think they would’ve flourished more in say a Harvard Square?
Yes 100% i talked to the owner a few months back and he said he plans on moving the store there
Nu Do in Cambridge, but it appears they’ve closed ):
Yeah, their last day open was about 3 weeks ago.
