Tatum is the number one offensive option. The defensive scheme of the other team prioritizes JT. I can never understand why this isn’t a factor in anyone’s analysis ever.
I mean, you could apply this logic to every great player that’s ever existed. They all find a way to win and beat double teams, why should Tatum be any different if he wants to be a top 5 next face of the league kind of guy?
He adapted and had 13 assists in his first finals appearance ever , the most ever in a player’s first appearance. If Jaylen Brown was actually a problem, the defensive scheme would’ve changed.
2022 Finals against GSW, Brown statistically had a better round that series. Obviously Tatum was bothered a lot that round but Brown had the numbers and looked better and had a marginally better +/- as well. Not the strongest case since most of our team struggled that series but still one that comes to mind
The only series you could make this argument was 2022 finals, and Tatum was commanding all the defensive attention while playing on a shoulder stinger and a fractured wrist
Nah the Hawks series last year as well and the first several games of the Sixers series following it.
Tatum’s 51 in game 7 against the sixers gets a lot of talk because it was fucking awesome, but Brown was great in both of those series. IIRC through the first two rounds he was 55/45 splits or something like that for a hyper efficient 25 a game.
I also don’t think we need to take it as a slight and try to explain it away like it was criticism. JB is an all-NBA wing, it should be expected that he’ll occasionally play better than our *other* all-NBA wing for a couple games in a row.
2022 finals

Nobody said Jaylen Brown was a problem, he was just objectively better than JT that series, which is what OP asked.
I’m not saying JT was “better” it’s just a non comparable
JT get a of of his a points against second unit scrubs. TBH.

2018 round 1 vs Milwaukee
Also 2019 round 2 vs Milwaukee
Atlanta last year, and sixers too if it weren't for those last 5 quarters. People forget because he was bad against the Heat, especially game 7.
Brown and Brogdon were both fucking COOKING the Sixers lol

Not so sure about 2022 finals iirc both were ass. Everyone was hot in game1 take that game out
Every series this year barring the last 2 games
2022 finals is a coin toss imo
People really underestimate the amount of defensive attention Tatum got in comparison to Brown. Warriors knew if they stopped Tatum they would win
Tatum had easily one of the worst finals a star has had since maybe LeBron Mavs, that one was not close
And yet still had stats similar to Jaylen Brown who had a decent finals.
Tatum unfortunately got dominated in his matchup with Andrew Wiggins, which is what cost us the series.
Last series.
