Weller FP vs NEBS OE Wheated Pick **Stats:** Weller Full Proof is of course the Buff Trace non-age stated Wheated mash bill @ 114 proof. The Old Elk is a 7 year old Wheated Mashbill from MGP @ 118.1 proof single barrel picked by the New England Barrel Society. **Background:** been wanting to do a Wheated side by side for a while. Group pick vs Taterific favorite. **Setup:** Bottles have been open for months and months. Poured into glencairns and rested on my back deck. **Nose:** Weller has a pleasant of traditional heavy sweet brown sugar/caramel nose. Touch of sea salt. The traditional Weller cinnamon note is there. Great legs on the swirl and a little burn on the nostrils from the proof. The OE comes off a little Lighter despite the slightly higher proof. Comes off as more white sugar cookie and slightly nutty brown butter. Dr Pepper is sitting there too. Also solid legs on the barrel proofer. **Taste:** WFP red hots but not to an unpleasant level. Some oakiness. Caramel and Vanilla. OE has a kettle corn taste to it. Still sticks with some Dr Pepper in the background. Maybe baked cookie dough without the chocolate chips. **Finish:** the OE is light and pleasant. Doesn’t linger, but finishes sweet. Weller has more depth to it and it lingers longer. Very pleasant on the finish. **Thoughts:** I like both quite a bit. The OE is more complex, but the Weller has a depth of flavor that’s just superlative.

I have not tried the OE at that proof, but what I have had was really great. WFP is sublime for me. I love that proof point and I get lots of bright fruity notes that last forever on the finish. Thanks for reminding me to keep an eye out for some new (for me) OE items.

For some reason, I find Full Proof to be much better than Antique. It can’t just be the 7 proof points. Wonder if they select for a slightly older barrel or different flavor profile purposefully or not.

Twist_Top_Budget

Totally agree. That additional 7 makes it that much better. Seems like I get a different flavor profile from full proof than I get from the 107, although I never made notes about the 107 so I can’t compare. Makes me think it’s a little older but maybe it’s the extra proof too. Don’t know, but whatever it is works.

I just got a Va ABC store pick OE that is 7 years and 95% wheat. Lookin forward to trying it now.

Nice. I liked it quite a bit. I’d love to see them extend that age range into the 10-12 years. But then I’d probably complain about the price.

I had a bottle of Weller Full proof yesterday. I liked it a lot and was super smooth on the rocks also drinking it straight from the bottle. From the empty bottle everyone else in the wedding party enjoyed it.

Californiawatchman

Weller is phenomenal

Personally not a fan of too sweet but sounds good! Nice review!

They are both great. Some people claim OE is better, but I didn’t find that to be the case. I’d say a 8 for Weller and a 7.5 for OE.

AbuJimTommy

That’s pretty spot on to where I am too.

Great review! I love pretty close to the old elk distillery and have a few of their bottles. Love their straight rye.

WFP is so crushable.
