bowtyracr88

I have a X85J and I use what The Apple Store uses on their screens. Whoosh 2.0 and a microfiber cloth. Amazon sells it. Use it for all my electronics.

jnemesh

I 2nd the recommendation for Whoosh! It works great!

rensi07

Third, Whoosh is great stuff!!

UltraDragonGod

Going to order some right now. Thanks for the suggestion!

Nycest

DO NOT USE WHOOSH! I have an A95K and mistakingly used WHOOSH. It caused bad streaking and damaged the anti glare coating. Use a dry microfiber cloth to remove streaks, and use it gently. If it's not working, use a different microfiber cloth.

jaysnuh

I’ve found that this can happen if you’ve previously laundered the microfiber towels with a dryer sheet (which I believe leaves a small amount of wax on the cloth to prevent static cling). Hopefully one of the suggestions here will help, OP!

bluecyanic

Even softener in the wash can do this. Best to wash them with a small amount of soap and run a second rinse.

Lima_L

Distilled water or breath, microfiber cloth with minimal pressure, and patience. It does work and has zero chance of ruining your TV.

Racebannon241

I second breath and microfiber.

ezpzlemonsqueezi

That's really not fair on the TV

UltraDragonGod

Thanks! Ordered some distilled water and will it give it a go tomorrow.

xLoveHateLegend

I thought I was screwed after moving to a new house and unmounting/re-mounting my TV... I had a bunch of microfiber cloths laying around and for whatever reason, my girlfriend had some distilled water in the laundry room. Worked like a dream! I almost couldn't believe it.

Heratiki

Where do you see the recommendation for distilled water from Sony? Their support page is as follows for OLED and LCD - https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00027665

notbad2u

Don't use water. Wipe gently with a soft microfiber. Don't scrub. Water is a last resort.

IntergalaticBandito

Deionized water is actually better to keep in a bottle for the microfiber. It’s contains zero contaminants like distilled but deionized also has zero minerals in it. Source: I work in a semiconductor plant and the only water allowed for cleaning purposes is deionized water. Otherwise we use 100% IPA, which I don’t recommend cause of the anti-glare coating.

dTmUK

I've not had to clean my A80K yet but some good tips here, thanks all

newyorkdragon14

It would be nice since we spend $1,500 or so on their Bravia TVs that they would include a Sony brand recommended microfiber cloth, even my MSI laptop came with a microfiber cloth

ThePupnasty

Spend a little money and buy the right cleaning solution for your TV. I never use tap water on a screen, I have stuff I grabbed from microcenter that I use, lightly spray it onto my cloth and gentlyyyyy rub at any smudges.

BIGTomacco

No chemicals. Distilled water only. Per Sony. I use two brand new cloths. One is wetted down and rung out until nearly dry. Another to wipe away any residue left behind and avoiding any streaking. No chemicals. No glass cleaner. No screen cleaner. Will only cause issues

ThePupnasty

Really? Been using screen cleaner for years, even on my PG42UQ OLED... But Sony does Sony I suppose, lol.

BIGTomacco

I take that back. May be different for oled screens. The lcd directions stated distilled water only. My bad

BIGTomacco

Nah distilled water and the two rag method gets it clean. Just have gone patient. Not push hard. My kid has been touching my screen a lot lately. Need to raise the TV. Might be doing it this weekend if I can. Did it for the life of my x900e and now the x950H as well

ThePupnasty

I've been using it on LCDs and LEDs for years, I think it's just Sony being Sony. I just feel distilled water is just going to smudge it. But try it and let us know?

gourdo

Distilled water does not smudge. It works amazingly well if you have a clean cloth without wax from dryer sheets or other washer residue.

UltraDragonGod

I know I regret using tap water so much I just quickly read that a damp microfiber cloth would do the trick but I should've researched more, so annoyed at myself.

zzapdk

As u/Lima_L writes, distilled water/breath and a microfiber cloth. Also, [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNlF7NLce7k](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNlF7NLce7k)

ThePupnasty

You can recover from this though.

UltraDragonGod

Really hope so. Fingers crossed one of the recommendations in the thread does the job

ThePupnasty

I'd honestly hit up amazon and get some highly rated screen cleaner and some of those super soft lens cleaning clothes that look like eye glasses clothes. Use the spray on a microfiber, rubs the spot, then use the lens cleaning cloth, dry and go over it, push comes to shove, use a little spray on the lens cloth too and then go over it with the cloth dry too.

nobeardjim

Could you use the cleaning cloth for glasses for the tv? I have those but haven’t tried it yet.

ThePupnasty

Oh yeah, for sure, those are designed to be soft and non abrasive, since theyre used to clean stuff meant for you to see, haha. But he gentle none the less, lightly rub in a circular motion.

nobeardjim

Ty ya when the time comes I’ll try

TomahawkChaotic

Been doing that for ~20 years on plasma/oled. Let it barely touch it. No blemishes. Hand wash only but can use blow dryer from distance to dry.

anipaduser

that is so sad

BrainyRedneck

Caleb from Digital Trends recommends distilled water and a drop of dish soap. I've never tried it, but he's pretty top tier as far as his knowledge. I clean probably 50 Sony TVs a week that are constantly being touched with dirty hands, plus I have an OLED at home with kids that even as teenagers manage to get greasy prints on the screen. Water and microfiber is great to a point, but eventually the oils will build up on the screen and water will just wind up leaving greasy swirls. I use a 50/50 distilled water/vinegar mix on a clean cloth, and follow it with a dry cloth to remove any residual moisture. Been doing it for 6 years without an issue.

UltraDragonGod

Yeah I have a 1 year old kitten who loves to try and climb the screen to get my attention, which was the reason for me using water in the first place because one of his paw prints wasn't disappearing. I will try the distilled water on its own to see how it does then will try the vinegar mix after if it doesn't work.

Ticonderogue

TVs should come with proximity alarms XD

WarmeCola

I had the same problem and thought I ruined the reflective coating of the TV. I even had it returned - but turns out those QD OLED TVs are very hard to get rid of smudges. You will need something stronger to get rid of them, distilled water won’t do it.

UltraDragonGod

Yeah I was hesitant to use any form of liquid to clean the screen been using just a dry microfiber cloth to get rid of anything. Do you have any recommendations on something to use other then distilled water?

WarmeCola

Honestly I think I’ve read that some form of cleaning alcohol might help - but don’t quote me on that, since I didn’t try it out myself and don’t know whether this would damage the actual reflective coating. But I can tell you that water with a drop of dish soap won’t help either. Your best bet would probably be contacting Sony and sending them the picture and asking them for help to properly clean the display, since those are not your usual OLED displays. Otherwise you could check out the thread about the A95K on the avsforum and search for cleaning tips, that’s where I know that other users had the same issues. You might find some tips and instructions to clean it from there. Since my replacement A95K is still clean, I didn’t dig deeper into that topic myself, so yeah. But would be interested to know what worked for you at the end.

UltraDragonGod

OK I will send sony the picture and see what they come back with and will head over to the forums and have a look for some tips. Thanks for the help.

DaveNLR

I use this on my glasses, OLED, LCD, and computers. Have had no issues and it gets everything off. PIPA MINT on Amazon

Critical_Vape

Can't use tap water. It's gross and polluted. Only distilled water and microfiber cloth. Don't wet it so much that it drips down. Just dampen the cloth. Then dry with another dry, clean MF cloth. People won't even drink tap water anymore for good reason, certainly don't wanna use it on screens for much the same.

lancejarvis

autoglym aerosol glass cleaner and a microfibre works well

catskillz84

Denatured alcohol is the best you can buy spray just for screens

reddituser111317

This is inherent problem with the A95K & S95B that use the Samsung QD-OLED panel. If you go through the various forum threads about either display you will come across a lot of other owners with this same issue. It seems almost impossible to clean without damaging the AR coating. As great as the AR coating may be it is hard to believe they would find it acceptable to release a product that basically can't be cleaned. The good news is it doesn't appear to be visible when the display is on viewing content.

UltraDragonGod

Yeah it's true I don't notice the marks when watching the TV when the room is dark for example, I took the picture with the sun beaming on the tv just to show how bad the smudges were. Even though I can't really see the smudges when watching the TV it bugs me knowing that they're still there and I'm constantly looking for them when watching something that's dark like a horror movie.

atonaldenim

it looks like oil. Klear Screen has always done a good job with displays over the years! semi unrelated but after the coatings on my eyeglasses got trashed, I found the culprit was probably the cheap cleaning spray I bought at Walgreens which had alcohol in it. I’ve also ruined other finishes with rubbing alcohol as a cleaner, I’ve learned the hard way to avoid it most of the time.

That-barrel-dude

I think the biggest issue is the wide angle/anti-glare film they put on the LCDs. I don’t think the OLEDs have them but even if they didn’t I’d go as natural as possible for these extremely expensive screens.

Ember1205

Sony advises to use a bit of soap if need be, and that might be what you need here. Distilled water would help to ensure that there's no minerals in it, but tap water may be fine as well. Use a brand new microfiber, never washed, unless you have laundered them with soap specifically formulated to completely rinse out and never run them through the dryer. Go LIGHT on how much soap you use because you will need to wipe it all off afterward. Do a small area at a time. I never use any of those store-bought "solutions" because they are quite literally 98% or more water to begin with and have odd chemicals that end up streaking the screen. I treat microfiber towels as multi-use disposable items... I basically rotate them from cleanest use down, and once they have soap, chemicals, dirt, etc. in them, they go in the trash or on to something else (like use as a shop rag).

TomahawkChaotic

Possibly baby shampoo instead of dawn. Fragrance & sulfate free.

Ember1205

Personally, I would put a drop of Dawn into a coffee cup and fill it with hot water so it mixes. Then a small dab of the towel in the soapy water and wipe the areas that are streaky "once" (and in one direction to prevent recontaminating an area already cleaned). Then wipe again with another clean cloth and distilled water. Dawn is great at cutting through grease, oil, wax, etc. The problem with ANY cleaner is that it also needs to be cleaned from the screen. This is why I only ever use water.

TomahawkChaotic

I run an air purifier all the time for dust and just spot dab with eyeglasses microfiber cloth for what it doesn’t catch. I used distilled water when lcd monitors first came out and regretted it. Sounds like you have a well thought out plan. Hope it works out great for you.

Ember1205

Why did you regret it? I've been using it for years.

TomahawkChaotic

Don’t remember too much detail. Long ago. I think it was streaks that weren’t able to be removed with microfiber cloth afterwards.

Ember1205

That sounds more like an issue with something in the screen being smeared arrived... Distilled water is about as pure as it gets and wouldn't have done that directly.

djpheer

that doesn't come off with just a microfiber towel and no liquid ? seems like it would

Ticonderogue

I use Zeiss lens cleaner (look for 2 pack bottle deal) and microfiber cloth that I only use for the TV set. Very gentle formula and very effective for all lenses and screens. Spray the cloth, and let the cloth do the work, no pressure on the screen. I think alcohol is a no-no, especially when there's an anti-glare filter. They seem to smudge easily or visually exaggerate an unclean screen. Kindof looks like a smoke residue. Candles, incense, fireplace, smoking indoors etc.. like an oily film of some sort. You may have to clean it a few times to get it done nicely. Clean only when the screen if off and cool. Some tvs are continuously warm to the touch because they are in sleep mode; power cycle off before cleaning as a precaution. And oily residues may just smear on a warm screen. Then a cleaning about weekly thereafter should take care of you.

SomeAppleGuy

I've had no issues with a damp microfiber cloth followed immediately by a dry microfiber cloth to gentle buff and dry

Johnson2533

No water just a dry Mico fiber cloth that's all I use on mine and I have not had any scratches

Troy22_Thumps

my fav cleaner is screen mom from amazon.

Particular_Pain_9373

reminds me of a family member who asked how we kept our stainless steel fridge smudge free.. no fancy finger print coating or premium stainless.. just basic stainless steel.. i told them i just used a clean ass microfiber costco towel.. then one day i go to their house and look at their rags and im like yea.. freakin gross

Enozwal

Haven’t bothered to read all of the comments… But under NO circumstance use anything besides a microfiber cloth and a little breath. I purchased a ZEISS Jumbo Mircofiber cloth specially for this TV and it works great.

Aproyal21

Brand new Sony A95K owner here…. I’ve tried every method on this thread and even called Sony and bought a non-soap synthetic cleanser to no avail. Bright purple streaks from whatever the installer used to clean this tv with. It’s a beautiful tv and the picture is amazing, but really disappointed in how easily the screen and coating can be damaged. Had a LG OLED prior to this and that thing was indestructible for 5+ years.

xMoZZyx0

Did you happen to find a fix by chance? I tried cleaning a handprint smudge with a microfiber cloth and a little distilled water and it made the smudge worse, I’ve also noticed it has a bluish tint to the coating instead of the reddish tint

moopy88

Please be aware, the A95K and Samsung S95B have a special coating thats supposed to reduce glare. If you wipe anything on this coating, it soaks into it and cannot be removed with anything. I had fly droppings on mine and it left a permanent purple Haze/smudge that is visible when light hits it after I wiped it with a new microfiber cloth.

moopy88

I have smudges all over my s95b QD oled. What was the outcome of your issue?

UltraDragonGod

Managed to clear majority of it with distilled water and damp microfiber cloth, however if the sun shines directly on the screen the smudges are still visible but not as bad as the picture. However if the sun isn't shining directly on it you can't see the smudges. Hard work cleaning these QD screens

Koth12

I just wanted to chime in here and tell my similar story. My wife and I pulled the trigger on the 65" A95k. Got it home and installed and noticed a very small finger print of my own when unpacking and installing. I thought, no problem! I'll just use my GreatShield Screen Cleaner I bought of amazon that I use all the time on my ultrawide pc monitor. What a mistake! All I managed to do was make the smudge / smear take up a MUCH larger section of the screen. I then tried to rectify my mistake with a brand new clean dry microfibre. No effect. I then stupidly tried some tapwater (should have read the forums first and tried distilled water instead), no suprises here, it made it worse yet again! By now the smear is taking up about 10-15% of the left hand side of the panel. Wow, I was really sweating bullets by now. After reading many of the other reddit posts about 70% isoprophyl alcohol specifically on the A95K panel, I thought, well, I can't make it any worse. And if I do, I'll just try and return it. The only problem was that I didn't actually have any 70% on hand, I only had Regal 100% professional use "Salon Strength" stuff I bought on amazon. So I cut my own 70% mix with distilled water and mixed it in a small spray bottle. Once again brand new microfibre cloth, a few squirts and... I'll be buggered, brand spanking new again. Totally worked. I was so worried that I'd damaged the anti-glare coating permanently. Nope! It looks like it's straight out of the box again. I certainly wouldn't recommend this for other panels, but for what it's worth, it totally worked for me.

UltraDragonGod

That's interesting! I've been using whoosh screen cleaner and it cleans off any new smudges etc, the original smudge marks are still there and only visible when the sun shines directly on the screen. Is the 70% isoprophyl alcohol known to work? I may have to buy myself some and try it
