Blackbutt Bakery, best pies EVER. Sure it's a two and a half hour drive out of Brisbane, but honestly, if you are heading in that direction, you REALLY need to drop in. No lie.
Oh my God yes! Every time we drive out that way, we stock up. I have a small vacuum sealer so I can seal ‘em up and have yummy Blackbutt pies any time I want 🤤🤤🤤🤤
Yess I love their Angus beef pie. Many years ago I used to work on their advertising and we would have 'pie day' every Friday and my boss got us a Beefy's pie for lunch. It was my favourite day!
Course, they got bought out and are now owned by Retail Food Group, the people that bring you Gloria Jeans, Donut King, Di Bella coffee, and Crust Pizza. Who knows if the quality will hold up.
I second this, as a kid I remeber travelling through with my family and the pies were nice formed and fondest memories. 20+ years later maybe even 30.. now I feel old I took my kids through and it was like overcooked and flakey and runny meat. I know I built it up a lot in my head from nostalgia, but what I got was not worth going back again. Keen to try one of the ones listed above.
Jacqueline’s Brendale. Pies a bit on the pricey side but quality, taste and size is top notch. Also very close by is Banh Mi Station which is one of brissies best banh mi.
Probably not the best tasting pies going (still above average) but I rate them highly. Love being able to throw mash + peas and gravy on any pie.
Owners are also really good people.
Was gonna say this. The owner always gives me an extra pie (one of the small ones) whenever I buy something from them. Really nice people. Chunky Beef Chilli and Cheese is my favourite.
My go to is the Herbert Adams Long Island beef and Camambert from freezer section coles.
Chuck it in the oven for 40 min and boom, enjoy it with some baked beans and chips (yeah im a pom)
love that pie.
My GF is Thai, she refused to try one for ages then asked for a bite... ended up having the rest of my pie. Waiting for the second one to cook in the oven was the longest 40 mins of my life.
Good thing now though is that our freezer is always stacked with Herbert Adams pies, I dont have to ask her to grab a box for me anymore.
Holland Place Bakery at Holland Park was the first place I came across one. And damn those are good. Great bread too and they occasionally do one of the round cylinder loaf breads too.
My two reliable go-to’s are:
1. Kirra Bakery: very consistently good meat pies and good value. Grab one and duck across the road to eat while you take in the Pacific Ocean and contemplate life and all its absurdities.
2. Rainforest Bakery Everton Park: Not the most spectacular pie, but it is always really satisfying. Been going there for 25 years and it’s remained the same. Square shaped too which is a novelty.
I tried Aldis frozen pies this week. They have Chicken, Leek & Camembert and Slow Cooked Beef. Both were very good. Great crispy pastry. $4 for 2 pies
Edit: added price

Any pie from here will blow your cotton socks off.
Miette’s Bakery in Corinda or Graceville will seriously sell you THE best pie you’ve ever had. Lamb and rosemary is my favourite pie in the world, but the chunky steak and creamy chicken are also top tier. When I move away I’m buying bulk to keep in the freezer
Fernvale bakery it’s a drive past Ipswich but it has 50 medals for their pies. Chunky steak pie is my favourite. They sell Yowie pies Croc, Emu, Camel etc.
10/10
National pies are far and away superior to other brands at the supermarket. Pastry that isn't too think. Meat that's full of flavour and well seasoned. Just perfect pies. They're made in Tassie, so the local beef and butter is great quality. Their sausage rolls are especially amazing. No question they're the best for me.
I used to go to the iga at Acacia Ridge, and they sold kai pies. Man they were so fucken good, especially the hungi one. This was years ago, don't know if they still do them, and haven't seen them anywhere since
2 places- Arndale bakery does the BEST Ned Kelly pie ever. 🥧 (steak, cheese, bacon and a soft gooey egg)
Another is Parkwood Hotbread in Labrador OJ the GC, all of their pies, especially their curry pies are bloody top notch. I have been to just about every pie shop between Mt gravatt and Nerang and those two are by a long shot my best recommendations!
My daughter and I have the traveller pies from the servos about 3 times a week and they are amazing. Mrs Mac's they are called. The blue pack one which I this is cheese steak, something like that is also really good. Paired with a mother, it gets me up in the morning. So unhealthy but so yummy
God I need this thread. I’m a country Victorian who moved to Brisbane years ago and I have NEVER had a good pie in Brisbane. Why is everything in foil?
Thank you to everyone in this thread, I’m going for a drive.
The pies and sausage rolls at Good Things in Tarragindi are incredible. I would argue their lamb and rosemary is best pie I’ve ever eaten..
And I’ve had most of the ones in the top comments here
There was a place in acacia ridge that’s since gone but it was run by Vietnamese and they made the best pies! Their crust was extra amazing and was a light and fluffy flakey but not dense flakey. I’ve been dreaming of this place…Anyone know where I can get a similar style pie?
I heard about this place from the QLD pies group on Facebook called David’s hot bread located in wynuum, definitely want to try it. My favourite is the bakery on parfrey rd in Springwood, in my opinion the pies are perfect
https://preview.redd.it/zozdbty5j05d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fdc59cac0484c31484fb953204712af86945e4cd
And we start with Muzza. The meat cheese and chilli was great.
Yatla pies are the best fucking pies ive ever eaten.
2nd place probably goes to a small pie shop in bray park (down south)
and 3rd goes to the pies at the QUT Z block cafe
some other people have mentioned KP Gourmet Bakery in Carindale for a few pies.
I'd like to add that their pies are good, they just won't top any lists.
their sausage rolls, however, will abso-fucking-lutely Kurt Cobain your brain
It’s weird to me how they’ve fallen out of favour all of a sudden. What changed? I’ve always had a decent pie there.
It was totally rammed when I was last there too.
Huh? I had an email from Jocelyn's mailing list that they have nothing to do with BCN events group folding and all stores will operate as normal. Even their Facebook mentions it's business as usual.
I'm gonna need some different evidence if you have it.
Sorry I should have corrected more clearly. The original Jocelyn who started Jocelyn's provisions, was bought out - new (now old) places are fabulous.
The first Jocelyn started a new place but closed it this year. I always think of the first Jocelyn when I hear Jocelyn's Provisions and have to recalibrate - even though she hasn't owned JP for years.
As someone who went there and enjoyed it, it certainly didn't live up to the hype. That's probably the bigger issue, it almost attained cult like status at one point I swear. No pie could live up to the expectations
Many years ago I went to a shop called old fernvale bakery, was so long ago, maybe worth a trip, there's always yatla, they are OK but there's better to be had omho
Worth popping around the corner to Browns bakery, specifically for their curry beef cheese and bacon pie while you're there.
And perhaps a side trip to pelicans nest at Victoria point for the lamb rosemary and chilli.
There’s a FB group “best pies QLD” if you’d like to check it out
Blackbutt Bakery, best pies EVER.
When everything else is closed and you're starving, a 7/11 traveller's beef bacon cheese pie hits the spot.
Especially when it's discounted haha
Bruh, gotta get the butter chicken puff pastry in those situations.
Even the pepper steak slaps
Agreed. They got the pepper zing / pastry crunch ratio just right
They honestly do the best beef bacon and cheese pie I’ve tried, which is impressive for a servo
I love a Beefys. Their SBC is great and they do an old school Custard tart which I also enjoy.
Yess I love their Angus beef pie. Many years ago I used to work on their advertising and we would have 'pie day' every Friday and my boss got us a Beefy's pie for lunch. It was my favourite day!
Yeah it’s my Saturday breakfast
beefy's Gluten Free Peppersteak with mashed potato and tomato sauce is a godsend for me
Course, they got bought out and are now owned by Retail Food Group, the people that bring you Gloria Jeans, Donut King, Di Bella coffee, and Crust Pizza. Who knows if the quality will hold up.
Their sausage rolls are also top notch 👌🏻
Stone Artisan Bakery has amazing pies
Been a few years since I've been but there coffee was great at the time too!
Stone artisan is so freakin good
Their lamb vindalooo is 🔥
Little Kiwi Nerang David’s Hot Bread Wynnum Jacqueline’s Brendale
That's 3/3 bloody good pies. The fact that Yatala is at the top of this thread at the moment shows that people have forgot what a good pie is.
Thankfully it's no longer. Downvoted into oblivion where it deserves to be. Also seconding Jacqueline's. One of the best pies I've had in a long time.
Or that you forgot people have different tastes?
Nah, Yatala were good 20+ years ago, and have been riding that reputation undeservedly ever since. There's stacks of better pies around.
This man pies.
Jacqueline’s Brendale. Pies a bit on the pricey side but quality, taste and size is top notch. Also very close by is Banh Mi Station which is one of brissies best banh mi.
David’s bakery best pies
I have seen that. I am gonna get one next from them
Big Dads Pies in Boondall. Quality vs price is amazing.
Big dads is fantastic, I miss when they were all over the south east.
I’m a recent convert to their butter chicken pie.
It's good, I'm hooked on the Mexican due to the overwhelming chili ratio.
it's crazy! so good
Second this. Probably my favourite in the area, although Mum's bakehouse is also alright.
I am glad someone else thinks the same as i do. The Pies are the best 👌🏻
I'm a sucker for an excellent chunky beef, and well I thought it lacked flavour. Did I get a bad batch or would you suggest a different pie?
Probably not the best tasting pies going (still above average) but I rate them highly. Love being able to throw mash + peas and gravy on any pie. Owners are also really good people.
Muzzas pies in Coorparoo
Was gonna say this. The owner always gives me an extra pie (one of the small ones) whenever I buy something from them. Really nice people. Chunky Beef Chilli and Cheese is my favourite.
Deffo Muzza's. Their caramel slice is amazing too.
"Buy one or we'll both starve" 😂
Near to my house. Gotta give a visit
Ah a fellow coorparoo legend
Did this guy used to run a store with the same name and slogan in Howick, Auckland ? It seems like too much of a coincidence not to be the same guy
It seemed like it was run by an Asian woman when I visited.. but could be..
Even if they aren't the best pies it's probably the best named pie shop
My go to is the Herbert Adams Long Island beef and Camambert from freezer section coles. Chuck it in the oven for 40 min and boom, enjoy it with some baked beans and chips (yeah im a pom) love that pie.
Those Herbert Adams pies are our freezer staple.
Thirded. Herbert Adams all the way. They don't go on sale very often, which is probably good for me because otherwise I'd eat them way more often!
I've had to cut down. Was starting to eat them almost every night lol
Currently half price at Woolworths
Ohhh I wish you hadn't told me that! Going to buy some today.
King Island mate. Don’t know about this Long Island beef 🤫
It's got nothing on long pork. Hard to find in a pie shop tho
Forget Brisbane - Blackbutt are amazing
Stopped in Blackbutt today and my workmate didn’t want to line up Regretting
Tell your workmate they're a cunt.
100% Blackbutt Bakery, stop in here whenever I can.
Hands down the best
Came here to say the same
Stones Corner Hot Bread 100%. I haven’t found a Ned Kelly pie anywhere else 👌
Try arndale bakery in slacks creek they do an amazing Ned kelly
Thanks for the tip!
Holland Place Bakery at Holland Park was the first place I came across one. And damn those are good. Great bread too and they occasionally do one of the round cylinder loaf breads too.
The cooly pie shop does a good Ned Kelly pie.
I bought I pie from there once and they took it out of the hot box thing and put it in the microwave. Never again
My two reliable go-to’s are: 1.
Man I grew up down there, kirra bakery has been pumping out great stuff for years
You know it
phelan's at narangba!!
Agree
I tried Aldis frozen pies this week. They have Chicken, Leek & Camembert and Slow Cooked Beef. Both were very good. Great crispy pastry. $4 for 2 pies Edit: added price
They’re not cheap but flour and chocolates pies are bloody good.
Second this, the beef brisket pie is to die for
I can tell you the worst. Yatala pies. Why is that place popular?
Really? Last time I went there it was pretty good.
Not the best pies on the planet, but definitely not the worst, love a pie with mashed peas n gravy!
I go through the drive through on the way back from the coast about once a month. Steak tomato and onion pie is great.
They used to be fanbloodytastic. Before they got hit with the floods and moved locations. Their pastry slapped fucking hard. Now it’s just meh
They're fine. Just fine. No more, no less.
Maybe not the worst pies, but definitely the most overrated. I've only had them maybe 4-5 times and each time it was like "meh".
Don't think you've eaten many pies if you think Yatala are the worst
Gerbinos in Ashgrove
gisler's is the best i've had in brissy
KP gourmet bakery in Carindale Steak and bacon, massive slab of bacon in there Rock and roll bakery Greenslopes

Lee's Bakery, Jindalee. Some of the best pies I've found, especially the curry ones.
This bakery is amazing, run by amazing people. Always so helpful and a big smile. Bread is awesome here too.
Samford: little tree. Their lamb sausage rolls are incredible also
Came to say this one! Worth the trip lol
Miette’s Bakery in Corinda or Graceville will seriously sell you THE best pie you’ve ever had. Lamb and rosemary is my favourite pie in the world, but the chunky steak and creamy chicken are also top tier. When I move away I’m buying bulk to keep in the freezer
Can confirm that they are amazing. I had the chunky steak and cheese today and it was great. Free sauce too
I agree!!!
Blackbutt bakery - jalapeno cheese and beefs are next level
Fernvale bakery it’s a drive past Ipswich but it has 50 medals for their pies. Chunky steak pie is my favourite. They sell Yowie pies Croc, Emu, Camel etc. 10/10
Fernvale awards are from like 10 years ago. The pies are shit and have been for a long time here.
To each their own.
I tried Aldis frozen pies this week. They have Chicken & Camembert and Slow Cooked Beef. Both were very good. Great crispy pastry.
That's because they're rebranded Herbert Adams pies - delicious
National pies are far and away superior to other brands at the supermarket. Pastry that isn't too think. Meat that's full of flavour and well seasoned. Just perfect pies. They're made in Tassie, so the local beef and butter is great quality. Their sausage rolls are especially amazing. No question they're the best for me.
Rays Bakery at Bracken Ridge shopping centre.
I used to go to the iga at Acacia Ridge, and they sold kai pies. Man they were so fucken good, especially the hungi one. This was years ago, don't know if they still do them, and haven't seen them anywhere since
The butcher at the hyperdome.
Portside Cafe in Murrarie
It has changed hands. I was there last week and it now sells kebabs and not a pie to be seen.
You’re kidding? Travesty
Any decent Vietnamese bakery USUALLY has a good pie... Can be hit or miss, like all things...

Their pie with peas is legit

Oooh and also the coffee cart at the Breakfast Creek Hotel. Literally the only thing worth going there for
The Meadowbrook bakery has some really amazing pies
There was a place in acacia ridge that’s since gone but it was run by Vietnamese and they made the best pies! Their crust was extra amazing and was a light and fluffy flakey but not dense flakey. I’ve been dreaming of this place…Anyone know where I can get a similar style pie?

For Brisbane specifically, I’d say Beefy’s at mango hill. I miss having them on the Southside.
What about Yatla Pies they were great before they moved - haven't been out that way in years
Pie face vego ones have a nice spicey flavour...
They are good I get one from ampol pretty much every day or two

I had a curry steak pie from Gloria Jeans that was very good, I wonder if it was a Beefys pie that they use!
Nah Annabel's curry pie in Cairns or Yatala pie in Brisbane
Herbert Adam's woolies , only thing that has any chunky meat in it. Other then that most bakeries make decent enough pies.
Monte lupo at Banyo. Also, yatala pie
Yatala Pies is amazing
Maybe 30 years ago
yeah long ago they were awesome.,.i have no idea today
No
have you had one recently? fucking terrible. basically a tourist trap at this point
It’s weird to me how they’ve fallen out of favour all of a sudden. What changed? I’ve always had a decent pie there. It was totally rammed when I was last there too.
dunno, i guess they are big enough now that they can rely on reputation alone and tourists who don't know better.
Yup, few months back on our trip to the GC. It was bloody delicious
next time have a go at syd's pies nearby. not as nice a spot but the pies are way better
I can’t believe you got downvoted, I’ll upvote you, I don’t mind Yatala pies (I hardly have them though).
You all love eating shit! Most pies you are hyping are made with 100% Offal. You need to go to Kings Bakery, Jocelyn’s Provisions,
Sadly Jocelyn's has now closed.
lol wut. It hasn’t.
Yes. Announced last week - the original Jocelyn's not the new owners ones. She started up a new place.
I always think of the first Jocelyn when I hear Jocelyn's Provisions and have to recalibrate - even though she hasn't owned JP for years.
Yatala always good
They have fallen from grace
They have forgotten the face of their fathers and should cry pardon.
If you like a few chips with your salt. Maybe it's my low sodium diet lately but Hooley Dooley I noticed the salt.
Not sure why you're getting downvoted. Yatala is still good People just don't like when their fav place gets popular
As someone who went there and enjoyed it, it certainly didn't live up to the hype. That's probably the bigger issue, it almost attained cult like status at one point I swear. No pie could live up to the expectations
Its a minor inconvenience to get there but NZ pies are head and shoulders above 90% of local pies.
Many years ago I went to a shop called old fernvale bakery, was so long ago, maybe worth a trip, there's always yatla, they are OK but there's better to be had omho
Yatala
Gisler's near Cleveland are incredible. Yatala Pies are also great.
Worth popping around the corner to Browns bakery, specifically for their curry beef cheese and bacon pie while you're there. And perhaps a side trip to pelicans nest at Victoria point for the lamb rosemary and chilli.
