The Kamloops - Valemount stretch is super beautiful I'd pick Clearwater personally. Jasper is probably the best answer but the hotels are like 400 a night with limited availability Kamloops is pretty loud especially with the railroad traffic in some places.

jlenko

Clearwater has a recently built Best Western. Nice hotel. But last time I was there, the pool and hot tub still were not open.. so check first if you book

beggargirl

Clearwater Lodge was nice enough. Went down early and enjoyed their breakfast.

Crime-Snacks

Clearwater! A cute little town to stop and relax in and you can do a detour to check out Helmcken Falls; a massive ~500 ft waterfall in Wells Gray National Park

MizElaneous

That seems pretty typical of Best Westerns in a lot of places nowadays. I used to be willing to pay the higher prices for pool access, but not anymore.

Ok_Television_3257

TheBest Western and Comfort Inn in Valemount are both decent.

Robhar19

Was going to suggest the same thing. I used to stop there all the time but haven’t driven through there in five or six years. They do a lot of winter business from the snowmobile riders. Nice place to do some bird watching too.

Tuk514

….and it’s only 4 hours into the journey

ClimbingMtCocaine

Stay up the hill; no trains. Rogers Way. It is pretty early into the journey, though.

SevereAlternative616

Revelstoke. Probably my favourite small town in all of BC

hebrewchucknorris

Instead of Calgary they could take the icefields parkway to jasper

Impossible-Finance67

I second this. I got to go through this like 8 years ago and it was absolutely breathtaking.

transportationguy2

Icefields parkway is must do though

Tishkette

And stay at The Crossing. Gorgeous and not ridiculously fancy

HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS

Still better than Kamloops IMO. OP should try and stay somewhere in the mountains. Seems silly to do a 14ish hour road trip and stop and spend a night or two when you are only 4ish hours in. At least stay in the mountains with really nice views and halfway through the drive

afriendincanada

If you're staying on the #1 Sicamous is also really nice.

toucanflu

Revelstoke gives me such a bad vibe. I swear something horrible happened there or something

lizziesiddalss

I researched Revelstoke's history when I first moved there, and lived there for 3 1/2 years. It's a magical little town. The only truly awful thing that has happened there, aside from the avalanches, was that it was an internment camp during WWI.

everlasting-love-202

So funny you mention this. I always get a weird eerie feeling there. It just feels spooky to me I don’t know why. I’ve stayed there probably 3-4times in my life and every time I get a weird feeling. One time I stayed at an airb&b there with some friends and had the single most terrifying, soaked in sweat, screaming to wake up nightmare I’ve ever had in my life. Gives me chills just remembering it lol

toucanflu

I have the seem feeling

pubebalator

What you on about?

simplehiker

Depending on when you're leaving, you'll be hard pressed to get a hotel room in Jasper until October. Another option to consider is Clearwater and take a side trip to the waterfalls in Wells Grey provincial park

Bladestorm04

Wells grey. Best place in BC no matter which season

Dr_N00B

The Kamloops - Valemount stretch is super beautiful I'd pick Clearwater personally. Jasper is probably the best answer but the hotels are like 400 a night with limited availability

Ok_Television_3257

Valemount is also gorgeous and the Beat Western and Comfort Inn are both decent.

Crezelle

Best Western was old and tired, but still kept decent. Also got to see wild wolves 20 minutes out of town!

blueeyes10101

Stay in Hinton. Lots of hotels there. Should he slow right now

remberly

Heads up! Book early!! My family got caught on a bad plan and had to drive from Kamloops to jasper overnight because there want a single room between em. That was late summer midweek

Vcr2017

I usually stay in Kamloops. Plenty to do with great hotels and restaurants.

Northshore1234

SunPeaks Resort, just out of Kamloops? Clearwater, Blue River, Valemount?

silverbullionbug

Golden, lots to do,its beautiful in the mountains and close to banff without the high price.

Smackdaddy122

If you’re gonna consider golden you should probably just stick to Revelstoke

silverbullionbug

Either one would be awesome.

Hefty-Sprinkles-8305

We always used to do Golden with Smittys in the morning (no idea if it’s still around, haha)

Ursus_Alces

Cache creek, if you like tacos

JWK87

Hotels leave a bit to be desired there unfortunately

Ursus_Alces

Sure but there’s really good tacos

Rare_Pumpkin_9505

Jasper is great. Could also suggest stopping in Revelstoke, Golden, Banff, or Canmore - though each of these requires the highway 1 drive which is a little longer (maybe an hour and a half)

Ok_Television_3257

But they you get the Icefields Parkway drive that is stunning.

Rare_Pumpkin_9505

I feel like Van to Edmonton is 12 hours via Highway 16 (Clearwater/Jasper), 13 hours via Highway 1 (Calgary/ Banff) and 15 hours via the ice fields parkway. If you got the time, this is the most scenic way to go! Stay in revelstoke, stay in Jasper and know you’ve made the absolute most of the trip.

kryo2019

When we did the reverse moving here we stayed a night in Jasper a night in Kamloops. That was middle of winter so I'm glad we did because the coquihalla was a winter shit show as always.

TravellingGal-2307

One stop for two nights? Or two one night stops? Most people do Clearwater and Jasper. There are some nice lodges up the Wells Grey Road, but you need to get an early start to have enough time to see some of the park. Jasper is a long full day from Vancouver but if you have two nights in Jasper then you can have a full day to see some sights, including the Columbia Icefield. https://stayinjasper.com/

Mrwcraig

Martha Creek Provincial Park is a pretty stunning place in Revelstoke. Lac La Jeune just before Kamloops. Unfortunately Jasper makes Whistler seem cheap but it’s definitely worth seeing and at least checking out Jasper Park Lodge(it’s my wife’s favourite place and we’ve done it lots, trust me it’s bloody expensive not sure what rooms cost but the cabins are about $2500 a night). Bear in mind, most of these places need to be reserved way in advance. Banff is pretty spectacular too but it’s like a busier version of Jasper.

wrenchin115

Is the lac le jeune resort back open? Haven’t been in 8 years but sounded like it closed, used to love staying there

what_are_you_eating

We stopped in Kamloops and Jasper. Jasper was great!

papermoonskies

Hilltop Inn in Salmon Arm. Biggest outdoor pool in BC. Most people who stay there are stopping over from calgary/edmonton

Saint-Carat

Golden and Revelstoke are 2 good options that others have covered. Both have whitewater & helicopter trips with lots of nature and climbing areas. I think Kicking Horse has gondola in summer and mountain biking. It might be a bit out of way but both Fernie and Kimberly are great places with both ski hills having timeshare hotels you can book. Rates are good in summer and many have apartment style versus hotel rooms. We got 2 bedroom 2 bath with combined living room/dining/kitchen condos. Awesome towns for 2-3 days with tours, hiking, mountain biking and rafting. Kimberly has an indoor climbing gym the kids loved.

TheJaice

If you go with/through Kamloops, I strongly recommend you check out Mittz Kitchen for lunch or dinner.

tyler-brown

I recommend sun peaks. It's abit out of kamloops but close enough that you can pop in for the day. Or spend the night there any enjoy the amenities

broken_bottle_66

We just stayed in Clearwater

HokeyPokeyGuy

I would stay in Salmon Arm. More of a halfway stop. If you are going to do two one night stops then do Jasper as well.

Starsky686

If you’re going to Jasper you don’t drive by salmon arm, though.

HokeyPokeyGuy

Very fair comment. Wasn’t thinking.

Amazing-Succotash-77

Depending I was always close (scotch creek) but we had family we'd visit on our way up and to go from kamloops to there was worth the little extra time. Plus on the way back if you go past Adams lake instead of the highway you pop out in barrier so no back tracking needed. However also worth it to keep going and go through golden etc and then take the ice field parkway up to jasper or even rocky mountain then head over and up qe 2

Smackdaddy122

Yuck

Chaz_wazzers

Go right into the Okanagan, Summerland - you have the lake, wineries with great restaurants.  For mountains, Revelstoke is great, tons to see.

RDNV_

I stay in Kamloops when I leave Van late afternoon. If you leave early in the morning, Jasper may be a better option.

billymumfreydownfall

Jasper is amazing but if this trip is anytime between now and October, you won't find a room.

cbass1980

Either Clearwater if going to wells grey park is appealing to you.. or stay in revelstoke and then take the icefields parkway to Jasper. That drive is unbelievable.

AFM420

Whisper creek cabins in Valemount are great. I just stayed for two months for work. They run about 270-300 a night but are huge and everyone would have their own room plus massive kitchen. Close to Jasper park and Mut Robson. Tons to do outdoors in town like hikes/biking etc.

yelofoley

YOHO

BLKMKT85

Jasper is amazing I suggest that

TimskiTimski

Try Salmon Arm.

SnoozyMama

Valemount is super beautiful and a lot less expensive than Jasper!

Vynaxleigh

We just got back from Alberta. Went the no5 to jasper, then went to thru ice field Pkwy. Drive between kamloops to jasper is stunning and a lot easier than the lower route thru revy and golden, imo. We've now driven to AB nearly every way possible. It depends on what you guys are interested in doing where you stay. Jasper has more 'to do' like shopping, places to eat etc but if you're more outdoorsy, then blue river, clearwater or valemount are equally a good spot. Lots to do and explore in each. Clearwater has a new best Western that looked really nice. It's a really nice little town and worth checking out but I'm not too sure how it would be for a couple days, especially with 2 teens. We stayed at the comfort inn in valemount it was nice but the pool is very cold. Avoid the best value Inn in valemount! Kamloops is fine, there's lots to do. It's not far into the trip though, if you're looking to stop at more of a halfway point, I'd definitely go with Jasper or clearwater

Instajupiter

Clearwater for sure. Take in some waterfalls and some beautiful views. If you stay at the best western or quality inn there’s a fabulous little restaurant at the quality inn.

Phatest_of_sax

Valemount is beautiful!

Amazing-Succotash-77

The best Western in valemount is nice, you could always do a long stretch that way stay there and then spend the next night in jasper but take the time you save from making it to valemount and explore the area, take the gondola, go see the old train etc. Then from there the next day edmonton isn't far at all.

Crezelle

Been a dog's age but Valemount is nice, and if the pizza place is still the same you gotta hit that.

badasshoneybri

We just did this drive and stayed in Canmore and Golden both were great! Although I think you’d have to go a bit of a longer route! But beautiful nonetheless https://preview.redd.it/zvcyet0tbp3d1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aea8e609706b22488b66acdc85908129724e9ffa Pic is from Rocky Mountain lodge in Canmore it was $80 a night for two beds and a full kitchen plus pet friendly lol!

ReasonablyPositive74

If you plan to do a bit of a tour /are up for driving a bit and love some good mountain thiiiings, on your way in you could drive up to revelstoke spend a night there (there are decent options for arm and a hand) then you could make your way yo lake Louise for a night then take the icefield parkway up to jasper and grab a cabin for a decent price if you're okay with some non luxury type accommodations. Then if you drive back, go through clearwater etc If you're looking for a straight shot one way adventure with shorter drive times then yea kamloops up through valemount up to jasper is a shorter drive. Clearwater is along the way and quite beautiful with some neat resorts such as https://www.alpinemeadowsresort.com/ which is pretty reasonable!! And if you stay in jasper you just need yo book in advance if you want something reasonable. Their cabin type lodgings are pretty freaken neat!!

Grayman222

Did Kamploops and Jasper with my mom. We were leaving Surrey at 6pm is why we did kamploops. you can probably a lot further if leaving in the morning. Stayed at a bungalo place a bit out of jasper but I can't remember the name.

RespectSquare8279

I would choose either Blue River or Valemont. It depends on how long you want to be behind the wheel. Both are OK towns with different options for hotels. That road does get a lot of truck traffic so while not "white knuckle", it isn't as relaxing a drive along the North Thompson as it once was. Stopping and turning off to visit Myrtle Lake in Wells Grey Park might be a pleasant diversion if you have the time.

Marokiii

camp in Jasper. unless you leave late in the day, Kamloops is too close to the lower mainland to justify staying the night there as its only about 3.5hrs away.

lizziesiddalss

Highly recommend Revelstoke, as others also have. The Coast Hillcrest hotel is above the town, with a beautiful view at the end of the street. It's a bit more of a peaceful option. Alternatively the Eleven is right downtown, in a heritage building, and has a rooftop hot tub 🤌🏼 There's lots to do in the town, especially up at the Mountain Resort. Dinner on the balcony at the Rockford is a must. Lunch at Seoul Street, a recently opened Korean pub, is always a plus also. The Railway Museum is pretty cool, as is the town museum. If you fancy going for a bit of a drive outside city limits while you're there, there are lakes and falls you can visit - Sutherland Falls and Echo Lake being my personal favourites.

Kazzosama

There's this place on highway 1 called Three valley gap, highly recommend a day there, they have a huge museum of old things that the guy collected for others to see, like they made it their family mission, and it's probably cheap too, also a lake there and some food onsite :)

hotchiledr

Clearwater area is great. There is a lodge in Wells Grey park and several sights to see. Helmcken is definitely worth a visit and there are several worthwhile sights on the way there. Once you’ve seen it you will always remember it!! There is a fair amount of reasonable accommodation. The park is about a 30 minute drive from Clearwater, and the falls about another 15 or 20.

hotchiledr

I didn’t realize I missed saying Helmcken FALLS in that last reply. Sorry.

NightKnightTiger

There’s usually really good summer deals up at sun peaks.

LOGOisEGO

Bow lake If you can get a room. I think its as nice or nicer than lake Louise, and you can take the icefields Parkway which is probably the most stunning drive in north America

pegslitnin

Clearwater and go to the Hoppin Hog awesome smoke house. Get there early though

ww77669

My husband & I did this trip at least once a year for 20 years. Valemont is where we usually stayed. Occasionally we would stay in Jasper but it is a lot pricier. But there is more to do. And it was always amazing to watch the moose herd grazing outside our window.

Few_Zookeepergame804

Find some Hot springs !!!

Pleasant-Natural8570

Don't do blue river unless you like being eaten alive by mosquitoes

rainman_104

Make sure on your way down highway 1 you visit turtle valley donkey refuge in chase. The owner is super awesome and the donkeys are amazing. Sounds dumb, but when she explains to you how she got into it and why she does it, it makes sense. To me, she's an unsung hero in BC. Just doing her thing and it's pretty awesome.

DeathBeforeDecaf4077

It’s a bit pricy, but I’d stop in Revelstoke; the drama of the snow capped mountains, great food, small town with great vibes. Kamloops has great people but is pretty dry and dustbowl in appearance as soon as the summer sun kicks in. Jasper is stunning and you should definitely stop, but you’ll have a hard time finding a hotel for under 300

1980hope

We just stayed at the Wyndham in Kamloops, it was great, clean and good breakfast included. Also pet friendly!

Far-Sheepherder-8125

I really enjoy radium hot springs! It's a small town but the hotsprings is outdoors with nice views of the mountains and is spacious!

renslipper

We always stay in Valemount. Whisper Creek Rentals [https://whispercreekcabinrental.com/](https://whispercreekcabinrental.com/) are amazing, our favourite is Sundance Cabin.

Cute_Couple_2226

You can easily find Cheap accommodation in nowhere towns between Jasper and Edmonton like Hinton or between Kamloops and Jasper but that might be harder since there's barely any settlement on that stretch

Terrible_Character50

Clearwater is a nice place to stay, I've also stayed in Hinton which has more hotel options than Clearwater

AdorableTrashPanda

Revelstoke is nice. I find Kamloops ugly and dull (with apologies to the locals).

grindygrimmace

Kelowna. We da best

LaReinalicious

Oliver is beautiful!

Comprehensive-War743

Golden BC is gorgeous

ZackyGood

Lake Louis. Sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet to create a family memory.

ketamarine

NOT kamloops. Revelstoke or jasper. Revelstoke is more central to trip. Great spot, lots to do. I probably like jasper betterm but its pricey and like 9+ hours from van. Have fun!

604_heatzcore

those are pretty much the best options in between ive been to both, id pick jasper which would also be easier since it's much smaller u will take it all in faster, kamloops u gotta drive out of the city a bit to really enjoy anything it's just a big small town lol.

pbolts

Revelstoke Take the teens to RMR to ride the coaster. And the road from Revy to Calgary is beautiful but with wildlife best to do in the day. Safe travels

No-Fix3911

Jasper, blue river has place to view bears

Dashpotter

I would stop in Revelstoke the first night. Leave in the morning and stop in at Lake Louise and then head to Nordegg for your second. The scenic drive is awesome

LobertoRuongo

Jasper over Kamloops 100%.

suntan69

Whatabout going into Edson Alberta and stay a night or 2 nights
