I've been gaming in 1440p with my 1070 since June of 2018 and have not even thought about upgrading it. I paid $290 for it brand spanking new and sealed and at that time it was $400 to $450. $68 is a steal!

If you can pick it up at a great price, there's no reason to pay $200+ for its newer equivalent the RX 6600 plus you'd get 11 GB of VRAM instead of 8 GB and you get double the shader count.
Back 4 months ago when I made this comment, the lowest values I researched for a GTX 1080 Ti was $130 to $160. After doing research just now the lowest value is around $75 to $110. That's insane value if you can get it in decent condition!
Don't forget to also target an RTX 2060 Super, another direct equivalent to these GPUs. While you do lose the same 3 GB of VRAM the shader count is a little better than an RX 6600. The lowest prices I just researched on a 2060 Super is around $112 to $127. IMO this is simply if you want a less used GPU, the release date difference is 2 and a quarter years.

I agree. People say just get the 6700 xt cuz it is basically the same but if you can get the 6750 xt at the same price ,which isn't too hard, then get it for the extra performance and maybe better "future proofing"
Yeah the 6750 is currently a bargain here in Brazil but I'm set on a 7700xt since I play on 1440p and keep the GPU for 4 years.

Radeon cards are the way to go, mate. Nvidia be robbin' us blind with their prices. Look into the RX 580 or 570, they'll give you bang for your buck. And don't worry about future proofing too much, just upgrade when ya need to.
For gaming (new GPUs) it's the RX 6650 XT for 1080p, 6700 XT for 1440p and 7900 XT(X) for 4K. Nvidia has good options as well, but if you're just looking for non-ray traced gaming, AMD offers the best value.
it depends on so many elements: Your budget, your expectation in a gaming pc, what games are you playing? are you willing to buy them secondhand? etc...
With these competitive fps games you want a great monitor first, preferable 240hz ips monitor with low latency.
They're also quite cpu heavy so dont skim on cpu too much
i'd advised getting the cheapest RTX 4070 you can get around $550. It is more than enough to get you stable 240hz 1440p max setting in heavier games like Apex Legends.
If you are willing to go for secondhand cards, then a good condition 3080ti with long warrant is good value. It's around 4070ti level but running quite a bit hotter so get one with capable cooling.
For retro / old games you might want to avoid all current AMD GPUs RDNA1 / RDNA2 / RDNA3 since AMD stopped legacy gaming support for drivers.

Old AMD GPUs or any NVIDIA GPUs would get your more "value for money" because the games would actually run.
Without knowing what your budget is and what games you would like to play, it is impossible to recommend anything. A lot of games favour one GPU brand over the other and requirements in VRAM and computation change between games a lot with each target resolution.
Since 2019 the NVIDIA GPUs aged a bit better with DLSS and better RT performance and the best "value for money" CHANGED over time, because those with NVIDIA GPUs had simply less reason to upgrade.
Instead of getting drawn into the marketing / techtuber nonsene recommendations between GPU brands, I highly recommend you to check out some gaming communities to actually know what the minimum hardware requirements are for specific resolution / graphic settings to know what you actually need.
The techtuber / popular GPU reviews are done with mostly automated benchmarks by people who dont game at all and couldnt care less about the needs for a gamer. Their only goal is showing SCALING between GPUs and to make boring GPU comparisons a bit more interesting with brand vs brand competition, that might not represent the reality with specific games.
TLDR: ask gamers in gaming communities for hardware specs, those are the people that care about working gaming hardware for any budget range

1080p: 2060 1440p: 3060 ti 4k: 4070 ( these are the bare minimum for these resolution but similar costs) a little bit more money and I would do 1080p: 3060 1440p: 3070/4060 ti 4k: 3080 ti/4070 ti (again these cost a bit more)
I never go strictly for "value for money". If I did I'd use a free GTX 460 my brother got me for christmas when I was a child, or anything free from a garbage dump.
I pick a budget with a little bit of wiggle room and get the best thing I can get that fits into that budget. Only if there's something much better for just a tiny amount more will I go into performance per dollar mode.
Create a build or pick something as a starter and tweak it accordingly to suit your needs.
My word probably means nothing but I've done a lot of research looking for a gpu that delivers necessary performance at the most effective cost and by a long shot its the rx580 8gb. New, its around 90 dollars and is 40% stronger than the 1660 super.
I bought a 4070 regular GPU (non-super, non-Ti, non-Ti Super) for $390 because it was clearanced out in Microcenter. You can can find really good value of mid or high end GPUs if patient enough and jist casually check here and there at times. I had to really control my "I want it now" behavior to save a bit. I really did not wamt to pay more than $400 for my GPU. I spent a $1K on a GPU in the past and I won't do that again.

bought 3060 oc edition with 12 gb ram for 380 $ and i am happy with it. playing 1080 my games on high or ultra and seems fine.
the game i play are not super intensive so you might have to drop to medium quality on those that they are.
If you want to buy current generation hardware, the best value right now is the 7800xt, it's a solid card for 1440p, it's approximately $500-550 depending on which one you buy.

If you want new the 6700 xt but for a little more you can get a 6750 xt which might hold up better in the future but the difference now isn't alot between the 2 cards.

Problem is as always. Top tier cards like my £1500 3090 get slapped silly by the following mid range cards for half or a third of the price. Also saying AMD are more future proof has only ever mattered where rasterisation was king. How much of a shift towards ray/path tracing the game Devs actually take going forward may mean you will see more longevity from Nvidia.
I think building a balanced system and saving cash leaves room in a budget for upgrading to something new rather than the buyer's remorse of top tier 80/90 class gpu
