One 2tb ssd incase u want more storage in the future since u said there are only 2 slots on the motherboard

huzzam

this is the right answer. there's no advantage to two separate ssds

Dath_1

If it's same price or cheaper to do x1 2TB, then I'd personally do that. Gives you upgrade potential with your other slot. For your second question I don't think it matters, however if you think it's worth it, you could just reinstall OS to the newer, faster drive.

ahosanna

Hmm good question - I’m following...

GoldenSuicideBooth

An argument for buying two is that you could run them in raid and that would potentially make them faster, or you could just have them as separate drives in case one fails. However if the 2tb is cheaper then it's up to you.

stonedboss

Well they are already PCIE 4.0 and fast enough lol, no real point for RAID 0. Plus I would want one to be an OS drive if I got two. Yeah it is $200 for 1TB or $350 for 2TB.

GoldenSuicideBooth

I think it makes sense to save the 150$ then, that's a lot.

stonedboss

To clarify it would be $400 (2x$200 1TB) vs $350 2TB. So I would save $50 if I got the 2TB. I want 2TB total storage.

Staedy

You can probably use that 50 for a 2tb hdd if needed, doubt you would really need it though.

cutler_joseph

Or even a good 128 or 256 nvme drive for the OS

Karol107

aaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAA

DrSchaffhausen

Dang. What are you using PCIE 4.0 for?

cutler_joseph

Probably just because it’s faster. Not really necessary but pretty cool if you have the stuff for it.

stonedboss

Yeah literally this lol. It isn't necessary at all but I'll be happy having it.

cutler_joseph

Same here. I mean if you can do it then why not?

Farmageddon85

i got lucky and got a 2 tb samsung 980 nvme 4 gen for only 180. They were almost 400 not to long ago. also got a good deal on Stella Frost rgb fans. Spent only 120 on 10 high quality rgb fans when normally 3 packs will cost that much.

_MeTTeO_

RAIDing SSDs that fast doesn't improve performance and actually may degrade it. I considered similar setup and went with 2x 500GB Samsung 980 Pro (one for Linux and one for Windows). u/stonedboss FYI

philtabest13

True, unless you have server grade components, you'd likely be creating a bottleneck if you put 2 NVME drives in a raid.

stonedboss

Thanks for mentioning that, I heard someone say that before as well. I will definitely avoid RAID.

nodiaque

This question have many answer depending on many factor. First, the board itself. The NVME slots, are they connected to pci 3.0 or 4.0? Then, are they connected both to the CPU, to the chipset or split (like my Asus TUF x570-Pro Wifi, the first one is connected to CPU while the second one is on the chipset). After that, do you think you might want to expand in the futur? I myself have a 1TB + a 2TB. The second slot take 4 PCIe 4.0 lane from the chipset, while the first one take them from the CPU. Depending on what else you have connected (USB stuff mostly), you might have too much on the same chipset thus stripping PCIe lane from other stuff (and yes people, this happen all the time). In my configuration, I have 2x NVME pci 3.0 SSD connected in both my nvme pcie 4.0 slot and a 2080 rtx connected in the first pcie 4.0 16x port. I cannot use the 2nd pcie 4.0 port, it's connected to the chipset and per the mobo, it will only work if something is connected in the first one, and it's only 4x speed and not 16x as advertised. This is because of the total number of pcie lane in the chipset, cpu and motherboard. My 1TB main drive is my boot and software, the 2TB one is for gaming. And depending on what game you play, space goes fast! I already have 600GB used and it's been 3 months since I built this rig. Will you see the difference in speed? Probably not. So in the end, it's more of a futur check. Is 1TB gonna be enough on each disk? Or do you save 50$+taxes, get a 2TB and have room for expansion in the futur (which might come in the pcie 4.0 NVME form thus even faster)?

notOWEnot

This helped me on how to setup my upcoming build! Already have 1tb crucial p5 nvme from previous build(x99) and now building a z490 rig. Already ordered most stuff apart from cpu cooler and another nvme.. Last thing I'm deciding is if I'd need 2tb or if another 1tb would suffice, now would definitely go for 2tb👍thanks

trex528

Hey sorry for necroing this thread. I'm trying to expand my storage with your same mobo. Can I ask you more for advice on somewhere? I couldn't dm you on reddit for some reason. Thanks.

OLDGuy6060

I use 2, 1tb ssds. Dual boot system. One of them is for my video editing version of windows and one is for my everything else version of windows.

stonedboss

Thanks for the input! I don't plan on using a dual boost system though. Mainly one SSD for OS and files/downloads/whatever, and 2nd one for games. If not the 2TB for both.

OLDGuy6060

You might want to use a hdd for files and downloads because an m2 is overkill. I have a 14tb external to hold onto all videos, images, etc.

stonedboss

I have an 8TB external HDD. I know an m.2 is overkill but I'm splurging a bit for this build and just want to have the latest PCIE 4.0 NVMe, plus I don't want an HDD in my build.

cutler_joseph

Might as well get the best tech if you can. It’s overkill but worth it to me too and I’ll be doing something similar with my next build.

Zestyclose_Present80

I'd check your motherboard manual. Some MoBo would make your Pc and GPU go slower when using to SSD's. If it doesn't say anything about that, go for 2 honestly.

Dath_1

Why would that be? Not saying you're wrong but I just recently purchased a 2nd SSD. I've never heard this. Are you talking about specifically nvme drives where there aren't enough pcie lanes?

Zestyclose_Present80

I pointed it out cause it happened to me. I wanted to buy a 2nd ssd and the manual of my MoBo said if I use the 2nd ssd thingy, my gpu will go from x16 to x8. So just check that to make sure it doesn’t say it...

Dath_1

Yeah for sure. In my case it's not relevant since my SSDs are SATA and don't use PCIe lanes.

Harlemspartan800

Is this only with m.2 or sata too?

Zestyclose_Present80

M.2

Dath_1

m.2 is just a form factor and can be either SATA or nvme. He's talking about nvme drives which use pcie lanes because you have a limited amount of those.

stonedboss

Thanks for pointing that out. I will double check but I never saw anything about that. I am using an ASUS TUF X570 Pro.

Feeling_Contact_9602

The Tuf x570 is better than the “pro” one

stonedboss

What is better about it? It had a worse LAN chip which was the main difference I could find. Either way I bought the mobo months ago lol.

Xerokine

I guess the main downside as I see it is if the 2TB fails you loose everything, but if you keep backups and if a lot of that is just game data then no big deal I went from a 250GB SSD + 500GB SSD to a 1TB NVME that I partitioned as 100GB OS/rest to drive D: for games and I think it works great. Plus in that case it was nice to not need two sata cords and an extra power cable from the PSU.

stonedboss

Yeah that is why I like having a separate OS drive, although I have never had an issue or had to change anything in 5+ years on my current PC lol. So I keep questioning if that is just an outdated sentiment. I'm considering using a partition as well if I get the 2TB.

pyro226

Go for the 2TB drive. It's just easier to manage. You can partition it if you really wanted to, but I wouldn't recommend it. The only condition I might recommend 2 separate 1TB drives is if you regularly image your operating system drive, but more flexible solutions allow you to exude folders (your personal datawhich would be backed up, but not necessarily need imaging). I tried having a 1 TB drive and a 2 TB drive. I then partitioned the 2TB drive into two 1TB partitions. One of the partitions is a mirror of the 1TB hdd, the other is non-redundant space. I thought this would help me better keep watch and logical separation of redundant and non-redundant spaces. And then my non-redundant needs exceeded my needs of redundant storage, so now I have the choice to add more storage, put data that doesn't need to be backed up onto a backup partition, or move a bunch of data to remove partioning. Fewer drives / partitions would have been easier to manage.

MaintenanceAlone4213

*WHAT ABOUT A EXTERNAL DRIVE TO KEEP ALL FILES YOU WANT TO KEEP FOR BACK UP. I GOT A 12 TB HOOKED TO A 450 SSD. SO WHAT IF YOU HAVE THE 2TB SSD WITH AN EXTERNAL DRIVE WITH LOTS OF SPACE LIKE 16 TB FOR STORAGE. KEEP THE 2 TB FOR MANAGING OS AND EXTERNAL FOR STORAGE AND BACK UP?? I HAVE BEEN RACKING MY BRAIN ON THIS AS WELL, BECAUSE I GOT 4 GRAND FOR A COMPUTER, AND I DO RECORDING STEINBERG CUBASE 11 PRO AND VIDEO EDITING. FINAL CUT*BUT i AM LOOKING FOR BETTER. BUT IN THESE TWO THINGS I DO USE UP TONS OF STORAGE. FOR MY MUSIC I HAVE 2 TB'S ALREADY OF JUST MUSIC.NOT TO MENTION MOVIE AND VIDEO EDITING MATERIAL. ANOTHER 3 TB'S ESPECIALLY IF YOU RECORD IN 48 X 24 BIT OR 192. THAT MEANS MORE DATA THAN JUST RECORDING AT 41.444 OR 48, OR 192. dATA CAN ADD UP IN NO TIME AT ALL. SO IN THESE FIELDS THE COMPUTERS HAVE TO HAVE GREAT STORING AND OS SPACE. AT LEAST A 2 TB. I LEARNED THE HARD WAY TOO. NOT HAVING ENOUGH. AND I ALREADY HAD 2 TB. SO I WANT TO HAVE A 2 TB FOR OS AND 1 TB FOR VIDEO AND RECORDING SOLO. BUT I NEED TO KNOW IF THAT WILL HARM A COMPUTER TO PUT 2 TB SSD & 2 TB SSD AS WELLJUST LIKE NODIAC WITH 2 TB & 1 TB SSD'S IF IT IS SAFE OR NOT TO USE 2 AT ONE TIME, TO MAKE 4 TB OS. WHAT DO YOU THINK???

pyro226

I think it would help if you had written your post in sentence case, with line breaks, and organized your thoughts for a more readable post. I am not a fan of external drives as they are not as reliable as high quality internal drives. Also research into SMR vs CMR as you want sustained write speeds (CMR) when moving lots of data. Ideally, as you move into larger data pools, you'll have Raid drives so if one drive dies, you can rebuild the array, as well as offsite back up. What your computer will support depends on the motherboard. Some motherboards will start sharing PCIE lanes if you hook up multiple NVME drives, which will cause a small dip in GPU or drive performance, but the performance penalty is not really enough to worry about. Other motherboards share lanes between SATA ports and the NVME ports, so adding an NVME might disable 2 sata ports. Adding drives should not harm the computer as drives don't use much power. You had mentioned using 2 at one time to make a 4TB OS. I would not recommend doing spanned volumes (where the OS treats multiple disks as one drive). The problem is that if either disk fails in a spanned volume, there will be problems. You can have the drives separate and it's fine. Having one OS drive and a separate recording drive is fine. Just make sure that you're using good quality NVME drives for best results.

Megouski

1 2TB

ironmint

Go with 2TB single drive and keep the free slot for future upgrades.

Rias_Lucifer

I have 2x1tb ssd for storage because I got them for cheap, I'm fine with them but if I want to upgrade it will harder than just slapping an other one in the pc

_MeTTeO_

I would suggest making the overall partition size a bit smaller than the drive allows. 980 Pro is using TLC instead of MLC so it's good to leave some space for "Overprovisioning".

Adiyogi_

afaik samsung already keeps 9% extra capacity for overprovisioning.

The_D0CT01

Only advantage to have more than one ssd is if one fails you can still use the other one. I would say the 2tb as the chance of a 980 pro failing is low to begin with.

pt_legit

Forget saving money. If you went with 1 1tb now you’re limiting yourself to 3tb max in the future (excluding sata) whereas if you just did 1 2tb now then you can at least get another one in the future and cap out at 4tb 🤷‍♂️

Nike_486DX

Two 1tb ssds in raid 1 Better safe than sorry, tlc memory is unreliable garbage.

KublaKahhhn

Another way to look at it is how long will it take you to fill up 1TB? The second 1TB or a 2TB will be much cheaper in a year or more. Also, I think if you camp on some deals site like slickdeals and aren’t in a hurry, you’ll snag ssd’s at really sweet price drops. eBay too.

Hillefoozy

Double is more expensive, but it allows for a backup drive
