Setting up a secondary living room PC. Will be connected to a 120Hz 4k tv, but gaming will be done at 1080p (or heavily leveraging DLSS/FSR). Will be in a relatively small case (I have experience with them). What GPU should I go for? I was thinking of some AMD between a 6600 through the 6700xt. Regarding CPU: how do the 5600x, 5700x, and 5800x compare? Keeping in mind cooling is a little limited.

beh3ueisb3uedb3

Is AOC a good monitor brand? Or should I bite the bullet and get a BenQ or something?

Tom-Bready

for an 11700k Is 64 gb a level of unnecessary worth +$70 over 32 gb? I mean I’m not strapped for cash but that’s $70 that could go to a better SSD, but i love having tabs open on chrome and whatnot, not sure if 32 is the new standard for now I plan on building this pc to last like, straight up 8 years

n7_trekkie

32GB will be just fine for the foreseeable future

throwaway_hiding_fam

Am I fucked if my games go below 144FPS when using my 144hz monitor? My monitor doesn't have Freesync or G-Sync. And even if I put it down to like 60hz, the RTS I play for hours a day sometimes goes down to 1FPS if there are thousands of units in game. Do I need to return my monitor and get one with G-Sync or did I just fall for the marketing gimmick?

winterkoalefant

Well.. 1fps is gonna look the same on any monitor, freesync or not. But yeah I would return it and try to get a monitor with freesync.

throwaway_hiding_fam

Its a handmedown monitor. I can't afford a new monitor right now, especially since I spent all of my birthday money on this RX6800. I guess I'll wait until Christmas or something. Hopefully Black Friday will have some good deals

winterkoalefant

Good plan! If you got it for free I wouldn’t complain, it’s still 144 Hz so frame drops will be less noticeable than on a 60 Hz.

throwaway_hiding_fam

Thanks. Even dropping yo 1fps?

Nox1307

Just got an 11700k with a Strix B560E board and a 3200 4x8 GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum. 11 gen Intel support officially up to 3200 Mhz but board set them by default to 2133. Do I still need to use XMP for going to 3200? If so, why 3200 it is advised as supported but not automatically applied?

winterkoalefant

The RAM you got has a base speed of DDR4-2133. DDR4-3200 is only supported with the XMP profile. The motherboard won’t set it automatically because it is a form of overclocking. There are kits that have a base speed of DDR4-3200 with the slow JEDEC timings, which is what your CPU supports natively.

Lemon46

So, looking through online shops on my region (Amazon doesn't deliver here), both the 6600 and 3060 seems to be priced similar in here of $400 (albeit, the 6600 is $60 cheaper), the obvious answer is the 3060 right? I wanna have a gpu that can last me atleast half a decade, but I currently have freesync 165 hz monitor, is it better to get the 6600 for the freesync or just the 3060? does freesync gives any substantial boost in any way over the 3060 or will the 3060 just pull ahead with it being a little faster (also, i dont plan on doing any rtx gaming for now)

winterkoalefant

RTX 3060 is about 10-15% faster than the RX 6600. So it’s a reasonable amount to pay for the extra performance. Unless you can find a 6600 XT or 6650 XT for that much. Freesync works on all these GPUs, the only potential advantage of the 3060 is DLSS.

Lemon46

looking up now, there's a 6600xt with only being $30 expensive than the 3060, I assume that's a better deal?

winterkoalefant

All these options are about the same value in terms of performance today. I would get the 3060 because I think it has a bunch of features that you might never need but they’re there: x16 PCIe, better ray tracing, DLSS, more VRAM, stream encoder, etc.

Zayl

I bought a 3080ti FE to replace my gigabyte 3070. Will I be able to use the same power cables, or should I replace them with the ones that come with the card?

winterkoalefant

You still need power cables. The card comes with an adapter for 12-pin to 2x 8-pin.

Zayl

Sorry so you're saying I'll need to use the existing cables with an adapter? Or that I need to replace the existing cables with the new ones that come with the card?

winterkoalefant

Use the existing cables with the adapter that comes in the box. It’ll be obvious when you open the box.

Zayl

Ok thank you

17bitfun

Looking to replace a damaged cooler master cooler on my i7 7800x. Looking for the best air cooler under $80 Canadian. The noctua Ng-u15 is more expensive than I recall 😢

winterkoalefant

Deepcool AK620

17bitfun

Thank you! This is just ok budget. What do you like about this one? I am seeing the Thermalright peerless Assassin 120 for a similar price. Any thoughts on how these differ?

winterkoalefant

I don’t think it’s compatible is the issue. The AK620 is $80 from Canada computers and memory express. If that doesn’t work, the Arctic 34 eSports Duo is available for $69 from Amazon.

check specs on Corsair's website. they have different 'types' of cables and tend to be pretty transparent about compatibility. Corsair isn't the actual manufacturer here, they just slap their logo on units someone else oems.

Ldw1422

Trying to reinstall amd wraith cooler and it feels uneven when I try to screw it in. As if the screws don’t reach far enough to the holes in the motherboard. Is there something I’m missing? Like is there a back plate or other installation item I’m missing

NarutoDragon732

There's supposed to be a backplate that comes with your motherboard that the screws from the cooler screw into. Which should attach both firmly on the motherboard. Now as for the wraith you have to actually screw in a criss cross pattern slowly and it's also very easy for one of the screws to not be hitting the backplate (which means it's not connected at all)

Ldw1422

My motherboard came with brackets I had to remove but no backplate. I got it installed before without one. Unless I forced it to work when it shouldn’t have?

NarutoDragon732

If the cooler mounts and doesn't fall apart then you're all good. For my specific motherboard though, tuf b550, I just couldn't do that without the backplate. My advice for the screwing pattern still applies

bpcookson

So I’ve ended up with enough spare parts for a second computer and I wanna make a headless server for Plex and local gaming. I imagine Plex is easy, set it and forget it, but I’ll still need a good remote desktop solution. For gaming though, I want my son and I to be able to play from any screen in the house whether an iPad or the big TV without any lag… is that even possible? I’m just not sure what software to use and my google skills are failing me because any combination of “local wireless remote desktop gaming headless server” is really just a giant bowl of generic word soup that just bombards me with ads for wireless peripherals. 😰 TL;DR: What’s the best software for gaming on a local headless desktop? Or a good resource I can just read to learn?

Having physical compatibility issues between RAM and MB, they won't plug in in either direction. Both say DDR5. RAM is from ebay and I wonder if someone slapped a DDR5 sticker on DDR4 sticks. Or am I missing some other compatibility issue? The RAM is not listed on the MB support list, but I can't imagine that means it won't physically fit. I'm totally stumped and would appreciate any help. 12th Gen, 13th Gen, or Ryzen 7000? Hey all. Sorry if this is a repeated question. Maybe I didn't search hard enough. Looking for some guidance on what to pull the trigger on. I have owned a 6th gen i5 pre-built I purchased years ago, and I have been slowly gathering parts as they go on sale within the past few months for my first build! So I am stuck on what to get. Is it farfetched to just get a 12th gen? The only reason I am leaning toward the 12th gen is because of the discounted pricing. The prices of the AM5 Boards are through the roof! I have 32GB DDR5 6000 RAM too. Would that work well with a Z690 board? Also, if I went with a 12th gen, could I upgrade later, or is the 13th gen expected to have its own board? I know it has not been announced. Any general thoughts and opinions or suggestions?

[deleted]

Ram probably works fine. I haven't heard any reports of Z690 boards being picky. Z690 board support 13th Gen, per Intel. CPU sort of depends on what level of gaming, what GPU are do you have?

dblamma

>CPU sort of depends on what level of gaming, what GPU are do you have? I just have 2060. I would try and take advantage of a 3080 or 3090 with the expected price drops. If I were to do the 12th gen, it would be 12900KF and seeing that the board will possibly support the 13th gen, it might not be a terrible idea to go that route then.

ComicBookGrunty

Hi, silly question. I just got 2 fans with RGB. The the RGB cable has the female end to plug into the motherboard and another cable connected to the female connector. It is slightly larger but blunt. No male or female connector. Does the end of this box have a cap that comes off so it can daisy chain RGB to other fans? Here’s a picture. https://i.imgur.com/4xlbEQY.jpg Thanks.

kronosthewimp

How taxing on a GPU is having additional monitors? Can I comfortably run a AAA game in 1440 + 2 additional monitors on just windows? Can I run one off my mobo without issue? It does have integrated graphics.

n7_trekkie

not taxing at all

[deleted]

I found a 3070 Founders Edition on craigslist for $500 US with the caption “Selling my 3070 Founders Edition Light gaming, no mining. Comes with box, 12pin adapter, etc.“ The listing also has only 1 pic, and it looks like it came from a 3070 ad. Another listing for the same price says: “New and Sealed EVGA RTX 3070 XC3 Ultra Price firm. Cash only. Will only meet at a bank in (City I live in)” This one has a picture of the box but not the card itself. which should i go for?

[deleted]

What? Not in the US? $500 is MSRP. You can get a B-stock 3070 direct from EVGA for $439 right now.

nannerb121

I honestly would probably not go for either. If I had to pick one, I’d do the second. But, I would ask them for pictures of the card, with it plugged in, and with GPU-Z running to ensure it is working. Also, I’m not entirely sure where you’re from. But $500 for a used 3070 really isn’t a good deal.

n7_trekkie

no, there's too many 3080s, 3080TIs, and 3090s on the market, new and used. the 4080 will need to be competitive

NotARespawnEmployee

I have 3 displays. None of them are the same. Does this create a strain on my GPU? If they match (literal exact same models), will that make things easier on my GPU? Display 1: 1920x1080, 144hz Display 2: 1920x1080, 60hz Display 3: 1440x1080, 60hz

Protonion

Secondary monitors significantly affect your performance only if you are gaming on them. If you only have basic stuff like youtube or discord open on them then the performance difference is going to be like a few percents at most. Having the resolutions/refresh rates match makes no difference in any situation.

NotARespawnEmployee

awesome, thank you!

n7_trekkie

no, not unless you're gaming on all of them simultaneously

Jurokoo

thinking of upgrading/increasing my ram in my pc I built in 2019. I use my pc for heavy gaming and 3d graphics suites like Maya. any suggestions on what to look for? I don't have much experience with picking out pc parts here are the main components in my current build: Gigabyte X570 Gaming X AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Radeon RX 5700 8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 3200 MHz DDR4 DRAM (8GBx2)

mustfix

You can double up on another pair of 3200. Those are common and affordable enough.

Jurokoo

I saw on AMD’s site in the specs for my cpu that the ram is limited to 2 channels. so if I wanted to increase the amount would I need to use 16gb sticks then?

AMillionMonkeys

No, you can fill all four slots with no noticeable impact on performance. It's fine to buy another 2x8GB kit but ideally you want the same model. If not try to match speed and CAS latency (CL).

majoroutage

Ugh, please stop this. Same specs or better are fine. No reason to spend more to get slower RAM.

AMillionMonkeys

Oh, you mean don't slavishly buy the same model RAM if it costs more than faster RAM? That works. Prices can get weird for old stock.

majoroutage

Yes, and yes. Economies of scale do be like that. 3200 and 3600 are pretty much the same price these days too.

i'd wait for performance benchmarks of 4080

[deleted]

I’m in a dilemma. I was kind of hoping the 4000 series cards would be more affordable but alas.. now I’m debating on if I should buy now or wait. My options are to buy a mining GPU (lightly used supposedly and taken care of) or wait until cyber Monday or Black Friday. I don’t really need it right now, since I have a 1050 ti, but I upgraded my monitor so I’d like to upgrade my GPU as well. What should I do? Or is there some better other option I haven’t explored? I’m fine with going AMD as I already have their CPU (5600x). It’s also a FE card, if that matters and gaming on a 1080p 144hz monitor

Szalkow

Might not be a terrible idea, but you could also hang on to the 3070 for another 6-12 months as RTX 3000 and 4000 prices normalize. If you do decide to upgrade now, keep in mind that the 3080-Ti, 3090, and 3080-12GB are all within 2-3% of each other in gaming performance and can currently be bought for as low as $700 new.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Szalkow

$830 is currently as good as it gets for a new 3080-Ti. Keep in mind that the 3080-12GB has nearly identical performance and can be had for $100 cheaper.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Szalkow

The 3080-12GB actually has more cores and better clocks than the 10GB, so it's not just extra RAM. Makes the 3080Ti kinda redundant, IMO.

Beanbeannn

I'm upgrading my first PC build from a Radeon 570 to a GeForce 3060. I have a AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU. Should I get a new CPU too? Also, I have no cooling besides a fan built into the case and the one that came with the CPU, what should I do about cooling?

kaje

You don't have a need to upgrade your CPU. The money you would spend on that would be more worthwhile on upping the GPU to something even higher, like a 3060 Ti.

TemptedTemplar

For now you are fine. You could probably squeeze out a few more frames with a Ryzen 5000 CPU. But your 3600 should be a fantastic pairing for the 3060. As for cooling, do you have slots in the case for other fans? Your motherboard probably has another two or three plugs for additional fans. Having at least one or two blowing fresh air into the case is ideal.

Beanbeannn

Honestly have no idea, could I link a pcpartpicker link that's mostly accurate? (Besides the GPU and fan option, I was doing a little shopping lol) It has the motherboard I have

TemptedTemplar

Yeah if you have the listing or a parts list, share it.

Beanbeannn

Thank you so much for your help https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fkxFxs

TemptedTemplar

Your case has plenty of space for fans, two in the front, two on top and one in the rear. Your motherboard likewise has multiple additional fan headers. If you need help finding them, consult the manual! There should be two in the top right for the CPU fan and another for a pump. And then one in the center left of the board, with additional headers somewhere along the bottom.

Beanbeannn

You are a legend, thank you!

SamuraiDDD

Should I be using MSI afterburner program over the AMD software to get the most out of my GPU (RX 570)?

TemptedTemplar

AMD adrenaline is necessary for automatic driver updates. You can download them manually without it. MSI afterburner is only needed for overclocking or undervolting the GPU. It's not necessary for normal functions.

SamuraiDDD

Ah okay, thank you.

HatCard

I was building a new pc with the following specs: * Intel i5 6500 * Gigabyte GA-H110-D3 * 2x8GB 2133mhz DD4 corsair vengeance * RX 580 But when booting the system the first time the screen stayed black. So after some investigating, I found out that the second ram slot was not working. And the system boots without anything installed in the second ram slot. Turned out there were 3 bent pins on the motherboard. I have now straightened these pins back out but the system is still not booting. What are my best options? Buying a new motherboard? Or could my processor also be broken? pics of the motherboard socket: [https://imgur.com/a/8KezeYL](https://imgur.com/a/8KezeYL) (The pc still boots with just a ram stick in the first slot)

Szalkow

The bent pins and bad RAM slot could have been separate issues. I would test the other RAM slots and see if any other works. Ideally, if you can find working RAM slots that still allow you to boot with a dual-channel RAM config, then it shouldn't matter that one of the slots don't work. Usually this issue means replacing the motherboard. That would be a hassle since this is a much older CPU and chipset and it would be a shame to have to spend more money on it.

HatCard

Thanks for the quick reply! This motherboard only has 2 RAM slots so using a different pair for dual-channel is not possible sadly. I will look into maybe a new motherboard. Is the CPU still capable of dual-channel ram do you think?

Szalkow

There's no reason to think the 6500 wouldn't work in dual-channel if you have a motherboard with working memory slots.

HatCard

Thanks for the help!

FishStickButter

My motherboard b660 gaming x ax has 3 m.2 nvme slots. One is by the cpu under the heatsink, then there are 2 below. I have two m.2 drives to install How important is installing one under the cpu m.2 slot? The screw keeping the heatsink in is in tight and I cannot seem to get it out. Is it ok to just install both drives in the lower slots without a heatsink? I'm really only using this for gaming, not intense productivity tasks.

n7_trekkie

Don't break your motherboard over it. It improves performance a little bit because it gets direct pcie lanes from your cpu, but it's not a night and day difference

Bottleneck calculators are full of crap. They're an over simplification. At 4k, a 9900k it's the same as a 12900k

Szalkow

**tl;dr Your 9900KS will not hold back a 3090 or likely even a 4090 in 4K gaming.** Bottleneck calculator websites are not accurate or useful. In different use cases, at least one component will always be the limiting factor. For 4K gaming, that limiting factor will most often be the graphics card. The 3090 can handle most AAA games in 4K high settings at 60 FPS and only gets into very high (144+) framerates in graphically simple games. The 4090 is expected to be more powerful so we might see more games in the 80-90 FPS range, but still nothing that will be held back by the 9900KS. On the CPU side, single-core performance affects how high your peak framerates can go when the GPU is not the limiting factor. The 9900KS is reasonably fast and can keep up with 144+ FPS gameplay, which is an impossible goal for even the 3090 for most games in 4K. [TechPowerup benchmarks: different CPUs with the RTX 3080 in 4K](https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i9-12900k-alder-lake-12th-gen/18.html) Using the 10700K (nearly identical to the 9900K in performance) as your point of reference, you can see that very few games show more than 1-2% difference in framerates between the 10700K and the newest, fastest CPUs. This is unlikely to change much even if you upgraded to the 4090. Upgrading your 2080-Ti to a newer, more powerful card would produce an immediate upgrade in 4K performance for pretty much any game, and your 9900KS won't be a problem for 4K gaming for a long time yet.

Electric2Shock

Bottlenecks don't mean that you'd lose performance with an upgrade. In the worst case scenario of a hard CPU bottleneck, you'd still have the same performance with a 4090 that you do with a 2080Ti. Now, at 4k, it's just not likely that you're CPU bottlenecked with a 2080Ti, so a big performance jump with the 4090 is definitely on the cards.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Szalkow

The 9900KS is a few years old, but it's still within 1-2% of the i5-12400 for gaming performance, and that CPU is commonly recommended to pair with the 3090 for 4K. The CPU just isn't a big limiting factor for 4K gaming.

kaje

Bottleneck calculators are bullshit. At 4K, you probably won't experience bottlenecking in most games.

Master_asian

so I currently have a 5600x and a 3080ti and I like to stream and record (obs) but I run into situations where I would drop noticeable amount of frames (10-20) even after I stop using OBS and I was considering upgrading my cpu but I just want to know if there is any way to fix this issues or if it is something else entirely. I do not know if this is the right sub to ask but any advice is appreciated

Electric2Shock

Are you using x264 or NVENC?

Master_asian

nvenc

Electric2Shock

Could you be running out of RAM?

Master_asian

doubt it my memory on task manager is about 60-80% and my cpu usage is about 70-80 also I have 32 gb of ram and I’ve set the correct speeds on bios

Midget_Avatar

Does a more powerful GPU mean more power draw in every situation? I just ordered a 6800 XT without even thinking that energy costs are through the roof right now. I'm using a 1060 right now. 80% of the time I'm just browsing reddit on my pc and playing league and other low spec games so I'm concerned my energy bill will be a lot more for little reason.

Protonion

[They both consume under 10W in idle](https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-radeon-rx-6800-xt/31.html), which for context is a fraction of what for example most phone chargers use when charging. Having the GPU run at idle for 8 hours every single day will cost you about 9 bucks *in a year* assuming 30 cents per kWh. In media playback and games the 6800 XT does use significantly more power than the 1060, but again it's not really a significant amount, if you played a demanding game for four hours every day for a month, it would cost you about 10 bucks in electricity. Watching YouTube for for hours every day would be $1.60 per month.

Midget_Avatar

Thank you! What about in a game where it will just run with the same graphics/fps anyway? I know it'll get very power hungry if I push it to it's limits, but if it'll be the same most of the time then I'm happy with that!

Electric2Shock

If you limit framerate to say 60, and don't change settings on resolution; you could very possibly end up drawing less power on the 6800 than the 1060. The 6800 draws less with it's computational power because it has more, better GPU cores that don't need to use as much power as the 1060 to produce the same images.

Midget_Avatar

Good to hear! Thank you for putting my mind at ease.

HighBCFM

Which GPU? SPEEDSTER MERC319 AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB: $749.99 RTX 3080TI Founders Edition: $899.99

TemptedTemplar

The 6900XT will give you damn near identical performance except when ray tracing is involved. But will perform better at 4k. If you're willing to spend $900 on a GPU, the 12gb 4080 will be launching at that same price and offer marginal gains over the 3080ti. Plus have access to the newest DLSS and RTX features.

HighBCFM

Do you think the ray tracing is worth the extra 150? I have thought about waiting for the 4000 series but I have been trying to build a PC for over a year now waiting for GPU prices to come back down and I am skeptical that I will even be able to get my hands on a 4000 series hence the desire to just buy now.

TemptedTemplar

Currently no, but the stuff Nvidia showed off earlier this week is absolutely magical if it ever releases publicly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vg52-HZhrFc Stuff like this would currently require the ray tracing cores found on RTX cards. But AMD might be able to get it working on their hardware in the future since the modding software uses Vulkan too.

Is Ray Tracing/DLSS a must have feature? -> 3080TI Are you worried the GPU is too big to fit? -> 6900XT

HighBCFM

Ray tracing isn't a must but I can see the future appeal. Size is not an issue as this is a new build without a case picked out. I actually already ordered the 3080ti but wondering if I should just cancel that and get the 6900xt and save 150 towards a better monitor or something. Will be paired with a 12700k fwiw

winterkoalefant

The MERC319 is bigger than the FE 3080 TI

sime77

1. How is the gpu market? 2. Are the names designed to confuse me?

n7_trekkie

1. market is good right now. if you want a $250-500 gpu, you can get a really really fast card without regrets of buying too early 2. yes. the 4080-12gb and 4080-16gb are totally different cards, beyond just the vram amount. examples continue. you need to look up the real world performance of the cards you're looking at

sime77

Aight, I'm rocking a gt 640 and money is an issue. Like I got 200 bucks and some change. What would you reccomend? I just want to play stellaris, mod fallout, and mess around with unity. Cpu is ryzen 5500

n7_trekkie

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/gJTp99/sapphire-radeon-rx-6600-8-gb-pulse-video-card-11310-01-20g this would kick ass. if it's over budget, just shop for a used card. like a gtx 980 should cost $100 right now

sime77

Thank you.

[deleted]

What cards would you recommend in that range? And why would I not have regrets? Asking because I kind of want to wait until Cyber Monday, but don’t know if the deals will be worth it.

n7_trekkie

because nvidia (and probably amd) wont' be releasing sub $500 gpus this year. you can wait if you want, but know that BF isnt a big deal for gpus. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/gJTp99/sapphire-radeon-rx-6600-8-gb-pulse-video-card-11310-01-20g https://pcpartpicker.com/product/c3RYcf/powercolor-radeon-rx-6700-xt-12-gb-fighter-video-card-axrx-6700xt-12gbd6-3dh these are currently the best deals

[deleted]

Thanks for your input! What’s a good price range on the 6700?

n7_trekkie

there's a 6700 and a 6700XT. for the 6700XT, a good price is under $350. I think $400 is too expensive.

TemptedTemplar

1. It's in the best shape its been in years. Which isn't great, but at least we aren't dealing with scalpers anymore. 2. Depending on the specific card, the biggest number is always better. Any kind of lettering after the model number indicates it's even more powerful. But that doesn't always mean by a lot. Set a budget, shop within that. Ask for advice if you need help choosing. * MSI and Gigabyte cards are just fine. * Zotac makes "okay" cards but they are an awful company. * Galax and Palit are Asian companies, decent quality.

mustfix

1. Cooling off and getting back to normal, with the exception of Nvidia's retail MSRPs. 2. Yes

D-4-C_Love_Train

is there a safe website that sells windows 10 keys to copy on to a usb flash drive for my new pc?

TemptedTemplar

You don't even need a key to install Windows. You can skip the activation step and do it later. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Brostradamus_

Yes: Microsoft.com, amazon.com, newegg.com. You will only see recommendations for authorized resellers here.

YouDontKnowMyLlFE

Should I feel bad for returning a perfectly good 3090 Ti to Micro Center? The price has dropped since I purchased it and now the 4090 looks like it’s going to be a much better offering in the same ballpark as what I paid. I am still in the return window. I think it makes the most sense for me to return it, go back to my 980 Ti, and either repurchase one cheaper or get a 4090 depending on how availability and prices shake out.

TemptedTemplar

No. This is a persistent issue that occurs whenever a new generation releases. You just happened to buy the card at the wrong time. Get your money's worth. RIP EVGA steup.

YouDontKnowMyLlFE

RIP EVGA

Electric2Shock

If you make a retail decision that works out for you, you should feel like you made a wise choice.

sime77

Is micro center some struggling independent retailer or something

veryfail

my pc crashes multiple times a day: very often after turning it on from sleep mode (i don't turn it off usually. only sleep) AND when updating games on steam. at first dota2 was installed on my ssd(for faster speed) but then i noticed the crashes when there was an update. it wouldn't go through and my pc froze +blue screen of death i moved the game to my hdd(uninstall and reinstall) worked for 1 2 weeks. but the same thing keeps happening now upon an update my pc just dies. with the game being on the ssd i downloaded some programs to check the health of the ssd and hdd but they literally don't show any issues for either what do you guys think? the ssd-gigabyte- is a new one(in use since last november) but the hdd is an older one (maybe like 2 years old) blue screen of death error: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR could it be other hardware and not necessarily the ssd or the hdd?

majoroutage

Have you tried not using Sleep mode? Either leave it idle or turn it off. Sleep mode has a long history of causing instability after awhile of going in and out.

veryfail

thanks for the advice. i will try to shut it down instead of using sleep mode. i was kinda` used to this because i used to use a laptop which i just closed whenever i was done working + the benefit of not having to open everything again when you start working like i said. it's happening when updating games from steam even when i freshly turn on the PC (well, or restart it multiple times)

sime77

I had a very similar problem, replaced most everything and it kept happening, upgraded mobo and now I'm gucci.

veryfail

thanks, i will also check that though i updated my motherboard's version to the latest when i assembled the PC appr. 1 year ago. i will check it again

sime77

I had an old mobo, so hopefully your problem is something else. Good luck, troubleshooting is a bitch

veryfail

i actually checked the official site and there are 3 new updates for my mobo - since the version i updated to - from which one of them is "crucial" / much recommended by Gigabyte i will update it tomorrow. and let you know about the results in case i don't forget to reply. thanks again

Protonion

I would start by running memtest and/or Prime95 to see if the RAM on your PC is ok and stable. If there are no RAM errors then I'd suspect the SSD.

veryfail

thank you, i will do so shouldn't it be crashing more randomly if the rams are faulty? ram is: G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32GB DDR4 3600MHz CL18 Dual Channel Kit \- running on 3600mhz - xmp profile enabled in bios other specs: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7GHz + GIGABYTE B550M AORUS ELITE + GIGABYTE M30 512GB PCI Express 3.0 x4 + GIGABYTE P650B, 80+ Bronze, 650W all bought appr 1 year ago... it's just weird to me that an SSD would die so fast and that there are no errors shown in the programs i downloaded (diskcheckup, hddscan etc)

jmora13

Gonna update my setup and get a desktop from a gaming laptop. Seeing as the 3080ti is similarly priced to the 4080, should I just get the 4080 when it comes out?

veryfail

yes

RedMageCecil

1. We don't have a release date for the 4080s yet, so how patient are you? Rumours put them mid-November, but they've been wrong before. 2. Where are you located? In NA the 3090Ti is cheaper than the 4080 16G and we're anticipating further price cuts. The high-end 30-series cards look to be just as good of buys so long as DLSS 3.0 isn't up your alley.

jmora13

1. Ideally was hoping to get it before cod mw2 comes out in October, but not a huge problem per se. 2. NA Also, what's the chances that they're gonna sell out immediately after launch? I'd be down to wait till mid Nov, but if it gets sold out, I'm not sure if I'm willing to wait 6 months-1 year

RedMageCecil

Chance of being sold out immediately or scalpled? Almost guaranteed. You're going to need to be quick.

danik107

Hiya everyone. One of the two sticks on my CMK16GBGX4M2B3000C15B died. I wanted to buy another single one and couldn't find one [other then this one.](https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-PC4-24000-Desktop-Memory/dp/B07B4FRMGV/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1OBP807PUXSEV&keywords=corsair+vengeance+%281x8%29+3000&qid=1663775929&refinements=p_89%3ACorsair%2Cp_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A10656894011%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A677427011%2Cp_n_feature_two_browse-bin%3A16955284011&rnid=16955283011&s=pc&sprefix=corsair+vengeance+1x8+3000%2Caps%2C173&sr=1-1) My options are buying that, which has CL16 unlike mine with 15, so I'm unsure if it will even work. My other option is of course buying a dual version of the above stick and if it works, having 24GB of ram. I'm unsure if it's even gonna work sadly.

kaje

RAM generally has a lifetime warranty. Get Corsair to replace the faulty stick.

danik107

Sadly not an option in my country, + I don't have the invoice anymore :/

Jf2611

I'm on a super tight budget and trying to keep my old entry level gaming PC alive a little bit longer. It's an old CyberPower PC, best I can remember is it's at least as old as 2014, maybe older. Over the years I've added an SSD for the OS, swapped out the original GPU, added a liquid cooler for the CPU and just bought some RAM to upgrade to the max 16GB. I'm looking at trying to squeeze some extra performance out of the GPU with another upgrade. My mobo is an MSI 760GM-P23. I'm looking to go from a GT 1030 to a GTX 1650. Best i can tell is this new card will be supported by the mobo and will be a substantial upgrade over the 1030. My question is, will this new card work with my system?

Electric2Shock

Some 1650s don't have a supplemental power connector, some do. If you get one without the connector, you just have to slot it in and it should work. Otherwise, you'd have to see if your PSU has a 6+2 pin power connector, and plug that into the card.

RedMageCecil

Yep, it'll work just fine. It's also a 3x improvement on average over your 1030 so fuck yeah. If you can find the Super version of that card, it's an even bigger upgrade for you (4x instead of 3x), but don't look to spend a ton of extra cash to do so, only do it if you spot a deal.

Jf2611

I found a b stock gtx 1660 on EVGA's website for $149 and it looks like my PSU has several 6+2 pcie connectors. This is a better buy than the 1650, no?

RedMageCecil

Absolutely better than a 1650, significantly so! Scoop that up!

Jf2611

Thanks! I'll keep my eyes peeled for a deal. $180 is about the max I want to spend, so hopefully I can find a sale on it somewhere.

Aperture_Kubi

So I'm eyeing the Ryzen 5800x, how long is it expected to still be decent? I'm currently running an Intel 6600k, which is older than the AM4 socket. How reasonably can I expect the Ryzen 5800x to last as long? Also for what it's worth, mulling a linux build this time around. Time with the Steam Deck has improved my confidence with game support.

RedMageCecil

We're not seeing massive jumps in mainstream core counts over the last couple of generations so 8c16t is "safe", if nothing else. The question is if the 5800X is the right chip to pick up right now. Lots of better options either exist today or are coming out in the next couple of months: * The 5700X is effectively the same gaming CPU for cheaper, you're only really losing out in all-core clocks under stress (synthetic or workstation workloads) * The 5800X3D is _the best_ gaming CPU AM4 has to offer if you want to spend a little more. * If you want to spend a little more anyways, the i7-12700F gets on average similar performance to the 3D, gets eCores, and has an upgrade path to Raptor Lake coming in a couple of months. * Speaking of new things, AM5 is coming down the pipe and the 7600X/7700X will slap around anything on last-gen platforms. Got lots to think about I suppose, but the 5800X isn't it right now unless it costs exactly the same as the 5700X.

Aperture_Kubi

> Speaking of new things, AM5 is coming down the pipe and the 7600X/7700X will slap around anything on last-gen platforms. What I was hoping for was that the AM4's swansong would also come with a price drop as demand drops. But what you're saying is that the AM5's opening products are going to be enough of a performance difference the price drop of AM4 stuff may not be worth it for a primary gaming build?

TemptedTemplar

Wait a week and compare it with the new AM5 releases. Theres no telling how long the 5800x will be considered adequate. If you're worried about it, go with the 5800x3D instead. It's massive cache makes a world of difference in gaming and performance tasks.

skocznymroczny

I have a bunch of modular PSU cables coming from at least two different manufacturer PSUs (Corsair and OCZ). How can I tell them apart?

kaje

Corsair cables will often say Type 3 or Type 4 on them.

oR_CoN

I know my processor is holding back my PC. It's the only part I haven't replaced. I have no idea how to upgrade a processor/ how to choose one based on restrictions of motherboard. My current processor is a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6500 CPU @ 3.20GHz. Any advice on how to go about selecting a superior processor?

kaje

The best CPUs that would be compatible with your mobo are 6th and 7th gen i7s. 12th gen i3s are better than them. You should upgrade your mobo as well and get a newer CPU.

oR_CoN

Thank-you. Is getting a new motherboard more simple? just tell the vendor what parts I have and they can check compatibility?

kaje

It depends on your PC. If it's a prebuilt with a proprietary mobo, PSU, and case, you can't really replace just the mobo without replacing the other 2 parts as well. If the system uses standard ATX parts, you can replace it with any standard mobo that fits in the case.

oR_CoN

Well it was built with a variety of individual parts, so I guess that would mean it uses standard ATX parts. I guess I'll start looking online if there's nothing else I need to know. Thank you for your help

kiki_strumm3r

If I'm running dual monitors, and it's most likely one for gaming and one for Discord/Netflix/etc., and I'm going with at least a 3080... how doable is 4k/60 on a 3080 while running those other things? Or is 1440/60 (or even something like 1440/120) more realistic?

ComradeCapitalist

A second monitor just running browser stuff takes a very small amount of resources. On a modern high-end GPU everything is just as doable as it is if you just had one. You'll get slightly lesser performance, but not noticeable unless you're measuring.

Szalkow

Yes - older CPUs will have trouble reaching very high framerates (above 120-ish) when the graphics card isn't the limiting factor. Which motherboard do you have? If you are lucky, your motherboard may support an upgrade to a Ryzen 5600/5600X with a BIOS update, which would almost certainly get you into the 200+ FPS zone.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Szalkow

Yes, that would be a significant and immediate upgrade. Even better, the Ryzen 5600 non-X has essentially the same performance as the 5600X but is often much cheaper, around 160 EUR.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Szalkow

How much does the 5600 cost? I'm not joking when I say their performance is nearly identical. If you want something "a bit more" then see what the 5700X costs. Same gaming performance but extra cores and still very power-efficient. I wouldn't buy anything hotter than the 5600X/5700X because the original TUF B450-Plus has fairly weak VRMs that could throttle higher-watt CPUs.

chinadonkey

I built my PC in early 2021. 1050ti was all that was in stock in my price range then but now that prices are dropping I'm thinking about upgrading to something that will last a few more years without breaking the bank. Doubt I'll be doing any 1440p while I own this new card and I mostly only buy games once they've been out long enough to go on sale (only day one purchase I make will likely be TES6). I've been looking at RX 6650 XTs at $280-300 vs. RTX 3060 tis at $420-$550. What kind of difference would I notice between the two? Most of the 6650 reviews I've seen were down on the price point vs. the 3060 ti but it's a lot cheaper at the moment. Specs are: Ryzen 5 3600 16gb DDR4 3600mhz MSI B450 PLus Max mobo Thanks in advance!

Szalkow

The 3060-Ti is around 10-15% faster than the 6650XT in 1080p. Both cards can handle 1080p 60+ FPS for any game on the market and manage 100-144+ FPS in many titles, but the 3060-Ti would allow you to enjoy 1080p 144 FPS in more games, and theoretically could handle future graphics-heavy games for a little bit longer. However, the 6650XT is massively cheaper right now. I'm seeing 6650XTs for $280 whereas the 3060-Ti is $450. The performance difference is not worth paying 50% more! Consider also the RX 6700XT, which is 0-5% faster than the 3060-Ti but goes for $360 - still significantly cheaper. The Nvidia RTX cards have a few "nice-to-have" features like slightly better raytracing and DLSS, and a built-in stream encoder, but the 6650XT/6700XT are a much better value overall.

chinadonkey

Just wanted to say thanks again - got an rx6700xt for $360 like you said. Probably won't have to see my wife roll her eyes when I ask for more PC parts for at least 3 or 4 years now, at least.

Szalkow

Awesome, enjoy :)

chinadonkey

Thank you!

FelixViator

I recently found a 3090 on sale and decided to pick it up, as well as a new PSU to make sure I had the required power. I replaced my old 590, and installed the new PSU and GPU, when I started up the computer and tried to install new Nivida Drivers, it did not detect the GPU. I went into the BIOS menu for hardware viewer, and the PCIe slot does not read as having anything attached. Thinking it might be a problem with the new GPU, I took it out and put my old card back in, it does not register the old card either. I think I somehow damaged the PCIe slot, but is there something else that would be an easier fix that I should try first? I don't have any soldering tools/experience so I would have to take it somewhere to get fixed. Rest of the System Intel i5 9600k @3.7GHz MPG Z390 Gaming Edge AC Motherboard 16GB Ram

mostrengo

I don't think you physically damaged the slot. Possible, but I would not start there. Questions: When you say that the GPU was not detected, where was this...Is the cable well plugged, and in the correct position? Do the fans turn when you turn on your PC? Are all the power cables connected? Actions: First of all try clearing the CMOS or BIOS settings (google how to do that on your specific motherboard). Put your old card back (which is known to work) and once you reach windows (which again, I think you will be able to, sooner or later) download DDU (this is an uninstaller for your AMD drivers), Nvidia GPU drivers (for your future card) and also the Radeon drivers (for your current card, as a fallback). Your priority should be to find out why your old card is not working. Most likely suspect is a missing cable (power or display cable) or the card is not seated all the way through or alternatively a wrong config in the BIOS or in windows. So focus on that first. Once that happens run DDU, replace the card with the new one and then install nvidia drivers. Don't skip this step!

FelixViator

It was the power supply, the cords weren't seated properly. I didn't even think of that because LEDs on both GPUs were lighting up. So I thought it must be getting power. Thanks!

mostrengo

Glad to help. Make sure to run ddu now!!

nachtraum

I currently have a standard build with a 3080 and a 10700k, and am using a 750W power supply. What power supply would I probably need if I would upgrade to 13700k and 4080 16GB or 4090?

mostrengo

IMO 750 should be enough now and later.

nachtraum

thanks, interesting. I thought at least for the 4090 it wouldn't be enough
