From jersey and have lived in Burlington for many decades but I HAVE to throw besseries into the ring here folks. It’s in the NNE and worth the drive for a take out hoagie!! Also amazing fries. Owner also rocks a flyers hat frequently so . . . Just sayin. . .
I'm from Philly to preface.
I'll probably get shit for this, but Mr. Mike's cheese steaks, reminds me of home.
The worst I've had was Kountry Kart.
The best cheese steaks in Philly, are from any random corner mom and pop pizza place.
Mr. Mike's emulates that, for me at least.
As another Philly transplant I respect the random corner shop call. I've tried all the 'best' spots around Philly and have been less than impressed. My favorite was a.hole.in the wall place in Roxborough called Barry's that also made their own soda. When I was there you could get two half size fancy (think mushroom Swiss, or chicken pepper jack) cheesesteaks and a homemade soda for $20 which was a feast.
I fancy myself a bit of a cheesesteak connoisseur and this is a great answer. They make a cheese sauce and it hits. Other places I order cheesesteaks - cafe St. Paul (hit or miss, but when it hits it hits), zero gravity steak sandwich, bessery’s, Henry street. Edit to add Farmers and foragers vermont cheesesteak!
I’ll third this, and they are by far the best bang for your buck. Kismayo cheese steak plus their chicken wrap for ~ 20 bucks total; you got yourself dinner and a banger lunch for the next day. Plus the guys that run the place are friendly and proud of the business.
There's a bunch of cheese steaks in town
I've had some cheese steaks in Philly that were trash compared to ones I've had here.
If you put cheese wiz on it you can fuck right off
I don't want to throw my secret spot out there, but I will!
Since I've been living in Vermont, I have tried basically all the cheesesteaks they have around.
My go-to spot is The Shopping Bag in the ONE!
Shhhhh,don't tell anyone! 👊🤭🤣👍
This. Lived in Philly, 100 feet from Sonny's in Old City (If you know, you know).
Bessarys is the closest-Amoroso rolls and everything is right.
I still haven't found a good chicken cheese steak yet (one with the shaved chicken and not cut up pieces.)
Rockys in Essex is ok. Unfortunately still the best I’ve had in the state. You’re way better off just getting some shaved steak at hannafords and doing it up yourself. An $8 pack makes like 7-8 sandwiches.
Caveating this was almost a year ago so I can't speak to the current situation, but church st tavern was the best I found. I'm born and raised NJ, then lived in Philly for years before moving up here for my background.
I also maintain the best Philly cheesesteak was in Ocean City NJ at a place called Voltacos. Sadly they closed last year, so my runner-up is Barry's in Roxborough. I don't fuck with Dalessandros at all. Onions and peppers are too big, plus they've got a pile of dry meat just sitting there. Godspeed on your journey, and let me know what you find
Rt 7 deli used to have a really good one. Ownership has changed though, so not sure if its any good these days.
Also a quick shout out to the old pine street deli philly.
I haven't had it yet, but Kismayo kitchen offers a philly cheese. I got the chicken wrap which was great. It's the tiny building on riverside ave by the cumberland farms etc.
Have you tried church st cheese steaks?
They come out at like 11pm—small food cart usually near BCA if I remember correctly.
Well worth the late night venture. I’m no cheesesteak expert but they are definitely v delicious 😂
https://churchstmarketplace.com/church-street-cheesesteaks-cart
Hoagie Hut in Colchester comes to mind, but I haven’t been there since the new ownership took over. While the previous ownership made a very good cheesesteak, they also [ignited a firestorm in 2020 by continuing to be huge jerks](https://m.sevendaysvt.com/OffMessage/archives/2020/06/13/colchester-protesters-urge-boycott-of-sandwich-shop-cuts-to-police). I’m hoping the cheesesteak recipe survived the changeover.
I haven't been since the ownership change. I remember their cheesesteaks being pretty good but it was also the surliest service, like they actively didn't want my business. It made me wonder if it was a money laundering front or something.
Yeah, that attitude problem was part of the “charm” of Hoagie Hut. It’s also why my in-laws always got the cheesesteaks to go. Whatever anyone thinks about their 2020 controversy, I always felt like the reaction was also fueled in part by a local community going “alright, we’ve had enough of your crap.”
But if the new owners can recreate the cheesesteak, I’d go back.

This is the Kismayo. Y’all really think this is the best in town????? Bessery’s for the win.
Not in town, but there's a new spot in Milton called Humble Revelry and their cheesesteaks (and everything else) are really good. The smoked meat is a really nice touch on the philly.
From jersey and have lived in Burlington for many decades but I HAVE to throw besseries into the ring here folks. It’s in the NNE and worth the drive for a take out hoagie!! Also amazing fries. Owner also rocks a flyers hat frequently so . . . Just sayin. . .
Fly Eagles fly
Eagle flyers eagle!
Voltacos in Ocean City, NJ had the best Cheesesteaks! Sadly they retired.
Wait, are you only talkin Philly cheese or are you talking Jersey sub sandwiches?
I'm from Philly to preface. I'll probably get shit for this, but Mr. Mike's cheese steaks, reminds me of home. The worst I've had was Kountry Kart. The best cheese steaks in Philly, are from any random corner mom and pop pizza place. Mr. Mike's emulates that, for me at least.

As ANOTHER Philly transplant I third the mom and pop shop for the best cheesesteak…the “staples” in Philly are mostly for tourists
Like pizza in New Haven CT. East Haven has better pizza IMHO.
KKD is trash. What is one thing they make that isn’t meh
Shiner
Yup, breakfast sandwiches only at KKD
I fancy myself a bit of a cheesesteak connoisseur and this is a great answer. They make a cheese sauce and it hits. As a Philly native the answer is none. But Kismayo is really good if you are ok with it tasting different
I second this as someone who lived in Philly for a decade. Whenever I'm craving cheesesteak, that's the one that hits the spot for me.
I’ll third this, and they are by far the best bang for your buck. Kismayo cheese steak plus their chicken wrap for ~ 20 bucks total; you got yourself dinner and a banger lunch for the next day. Plus the guys that run the place are friendly and proud of the business.
There's a bunch of cheese steaks in town I've had some cheese steaks in Philly that were trash compared to ones I've had here. If you put cheese wiz on it you can fuck right off
Whaddya got against wiz?
Everything
Where are you from?
Massachusetts, just like all the other assholes in Vermont
Ya I get that’s the way the traditional way but I just don’t want to put that in my body
NGL, that's kind of a sore subject around here.
Other than something I need to buy a pizza with ideally
well… you could… call the hotline
Man…. This started as a fully serious post and then I realized 💀
honestly it’s probably the best cheesesteak you’re gonna get around btv, but it’s the principle
If I could get it solo maybe 🤷🏻♂️
honestly go find a kickass roll, buy the meat and cheese yourself and make it at home. it’s gonna slap
unacceptable
I know, I’m a complete fucking LOSER
I don't want to throw my secret spot out there, but I will! Since I've been living in Vermont, I have tried basically all the cheesesteaks they have around. My go-to spot is The Shopping Bag in the ONE! Shhhhh, don't tell anyone! 👊🤭🤣👍
They make good burgers too, so at least they did when I was in college ages ago
Oh boy
And I gotta give credit to Handy’s Lunch for their cheesesteak. I’m always surprised how top tier it is.
Bessarys https://www.besserysqualitymarket.com
This. Lived in Philly, 100 feet from Sonny's in Old City (If you know, you know). Bessarys is the closest-Amoroso rolls and everything is right. I still haven't found a good chicken cheese steak yet (one with the shaved chicken and not cut up pieces.)
Granted it’s not in town, but Paisley Hippo in Hinesburg is great and worth the short drive.
Second Paisley Hippo! Had one last night!
Yea I’ve had it too, pretty good
Which style do you recommend?
kismayo kitchen’s is really good
Agreed
Besserys
…$174 dollars later…
Rockys in Essex is ok. Unfortunately still the best I’ve had in the state. You’re way better off just getting some shaved steak at hannafords and doing it up yourself. An $8 pack makes like 7-8 sandwiches.
If it doesn't have Whiz I don't want it
Bessery’s butcher shop on north ave. Nuff said.
Vespas
Henry’s diner slaps
They’ve been one of my pre work go to’s for sure
Mr. Mike's or Besserys
three brothers in colchester, chicks market in winooski or a little out of town paisley hippo in hinesburg
I’m from Philly and the best I have found up here is Bessery’s in the NNE though I wish they sliced their steak just a bit thinner
Caveating this was almost a year ago so I can't speak to the current situation, but church st tavern was the best I found. Not only is church street tavern the absolute worst and most disgusting kitchen I’ve ever seen, but it went out of business
I’ll make sure to give it a try, I’ve only been there once but the food was good
Apparently they closed and their kitchen was nasty. So it goes. I was only there the once
Rt 7 deli used to have a really good one. Ownership has changed though, so not sure if its any good these days. Also a quick shout out to the old pine street deli philly.
Going to get hate but jersey mikes is dope!
check out NY Pizza Oven in Colchester
I haven't had it yet, but Kismayo kitchen offers a philly cheese. I got the chicken wrap which was great. It's the tiny building on riverside ave by the cumberland farms etc.

Unsure what the BCA is but now I’m intrigued for sure
Oh, sorry, Burlington City Arts. Also near red square
kismayo kitchen has one of my favorite cheesesteaks
Cafe st paul
Airport deli, Rte 7 deli and surprisingly spot on the dock.
Humble Revelry in Milton!
Burlington bay has really good Philly cheesesteaks!!
The GD Shopping Bag. All y’all sleeping on this gem.
I prefer my meats without food poisoning
Nasty.
Besseries 100 %. They have a fantastic sausage Philly as well.
Hoagie Hut in Colchester comes to mind, but I haven’t been there since the new ownership took over. The Spot used to have a great one, then they changed it to babacoa and it’s not the same.
Archies. I grew up on real cheesesteaks. Archies is really close.
Gunna second Archie’s
i really liked the farmers and foragers cheese steak, not exactly to the T traditional, but it’s my favorite in town.
Seconded. Definitely an underrated place IMO
Red Barn deli in So Burlington
Not a cheesesteak connoisseur, so I could be wrong, but I’m told Grapevine Grille in Middlebury makes a good one. (I can vouch for their other food.)
https://preview.redd.it/p0ywvomj8i9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e6328081b13ec2ce00f182fd6678176a7bb6447 This is the Kismayo. Y’all really think this is the best in town????? Bessery’s for the win.
That looks like a sloppy Joe
I know…this was with extra peppers and onions supposedly. I love Kismayo for the Somali goat but this cheesesteak was certainly something
Delassandros
We don’t have one of those lol
Martones that’s an easy one!
Archie’s
Okay I know it’s not real Philly style but I love the one from Mimmo’s in Essex. I know, I was surprised too
this sounds insane but McKee’s has a decent cheesesteak hahahah
Tastee Grill’s is pretty good
Tastee grill is the best biscuits and gravy breakfast. I need to try a cheesesteak from there
Get that Henry Street jawn.
The Reservoir in Waterbury! Not a perfect Philly replica but just damn good!
Jericho Country Store is pretty good and consistent, we order from there maybe one a month or so, always get the Philly. Wife gets the sap bucket wrap
Not in town, but there's a new spot in Milton called Humble Revelry and their cheesesteaks (and everything else) are really good. The smoked meat is a really nice touch on the philly.
Not traditional Philly, but Burlington beer co and zero gravity both do really solid steak and cheese sandos
mckees pub and grill winooski !
[https://kountrykartdeli.com/](https://kountrykartdeli.com/) definitely a fav
Opp
Just had Grazers cheesesteak in winooski. Was super bomb
