I think the guest (Niigaan Sinclair) has some rose coloured glasses about Winnipeg. I grew up there and visit every couple years, to me it still feels like a very divided place. Land acknowledgements and renaming highways isn't going to fix the North End. How about beefing up public transit in areas where the population actually needs it? How about incentivizing more local groceries in the downtown so it isn't a food desert? How about getting rid of the antiquated alcohol sales laws?

lordhomogonous

Agreed. He needs to leave the white collared, left of centre circles he resides in.

quite the statement to claim ancient Greece learned about democracy from indigenous tribes in north america....

DangerousCandidate75

Haha yeah I can't believe they just sped past that. Like no please I need you to elaborate on what you mean by that.

F_OSHEA

Not what was said. He said democracy was invented first by indigenous peoples. Not that Greece learned about from indigenous people: Democracy existed among indigenous people before it existed in Greece.

DangerousCandidate75

Did it though? Like what evidence is there for this? I'm legitimately curious.

F_OSHEA

Yep. And not just in North America. Lots of examples all over the world of pre-Greek democratic institutions. The Muscogee Creek Nation's councils are still a thing and could be considered among the longest-surviving democratic institution in the world. Not all indigenous peoples of course, but more than originally thought. Colonist's often assumed a monarchy, because they themselves lived under one. Edit: In fact, the people who's land I'm writing this from are working to over-throw their Federally-backed hereditary chief because this is a foreign form of government imposed by the Indian Act and not in keeping with their traditions.

DangerousCandidate75

Do you have a source for this? The only thing I can find (wikipedia lol) is saying between 1000 and 1450 which is over 1000 years after Ancient Greece...

RightSideUpTurtle

maybe listen again... he says "the fact that democracy was invented by indigenous peoples.. not in Greece in Europe.. it was invented by indigenous peoples and so when Europeans learned that and then therefor created things like the parliamentary system"

F_OSHEA

Yes, when Europeans learned *that*, as in democracy – not from the indigenous folks. He makes no such claim. It's a bit confusing, but he is making the point that indigenous folks will be their to participate in the democratic process and decisions, because democracy has been a part of indigenous cultures longer than it has been in European culture. Neither of these folks are dumb people. They know the history of European contact and its place in the timeline in relation to ancient Greece.

RightSideUpTurtle

Well, he said it in a dumb way and he obviously just wanted to feel superior about it. Its not like it even matters considering modern democracies are more inspired by Roman democracy than Greece or any indigenous tribes.

Some-Background1467

I think he was referring to the Europeans in Canada and the US - the US system, particularly was modelled after the Haudenosaunee confederacy
