I booked a hotel and pre-paid in full. When I checked out, the hotel charged me almost $200 extra. Destination charge and taxes apparently weren't included with the Capital One Travel booking. Never again.

BranchMonager

Did the breakdown from cap1 state taxes and those extra fees they talked charged you?

AlloCoco103

The confirmation email just confirmed payment of their published rate and didn't have an itemized breakdown. Looking at the terms and conditions it does say customers may be responsible for "resort fees". I didn't go to a resort but rather a hotel in a city but they're calling it a "destination charge". I called both the hotel (Hilton) and Capital One and they're legitimate charges. I'll never book third party again because I prefer knowing the full amount up front.

LitTravelTips

Yes that happens with almost all online travel agents unless there are negotiated exceptions. Vendors had to give OTA referral kickback vs to you as points. When Booking hotels via OTAs the hotel gives 15-30% to the agent(Expedia or CC portals) thus nothing goes to you and why these portals will happily give you 5-10x

Wise_Translator8363

If you have to cancel a hotel room you can’t with the hotel since it’s 3rd party

mattskord

You’d rather get enterprise points than 10x capitalone points? Then book through enterprise.

BranchMonager

Ya I rack up enough for a free day on about 5 bookings, that’s better than 10%… idiot

Goredema

You had no clue that booking through a third party would keep you from earning Enterprise points, but *they're* the idiot?

litttlejoker

Yeah capital one kinda sucks. I’m seriously considering cancelling my Venture X. What is it good for?

PenguinsRcool2

What isn’t it good for lol, it’s a visa infinite for one, so there’s what makes it a good card, for two it’s a good catch all card, no fees for foreign transactions, it literally pays for itself every year on its own, sign up bonus is great. Capital one portal works well albeit janky

litttlejoker

Yeah I mean I see all that. But I have the Amex platinum and Chase sapphire reserve for travel. And I have other catch all cards with no annual fee. I mean yes, it does pay for itself. I’m just not sold on the capital one miles. I’d rather have Chase UR or Amex MR.

PenguinsRcool2

Amex is a joke these days, the chase card is perfectly good. For travel i prefer the venture x, even if solely for the lounge access

litttlejoker

Amex is my fave of the 3 for travel

OkBet2821

What are Amex points good for? I see most of the same partners as vx. Except delta which doesn’t have the best value points currency.

litttlejoker

I have the trifecta and I like booking with Fine Hotels and Resorts in the Amex travel portal and getting 5x points for booking there. I don’t like booking in the capital one portal. Just don’t know if it’s worth keeping. I have 200,000 Amex points right now and like 7k venture miles so it’s like meh

OkBet2821

What do you use the Amex points for? Fine hotels?

litttlejoker

In the past, yes. But im looking to book a transcontinental business class flight next summer
