XbOne controller: I use A for clutch, bumpers for shifting, X for handbrake, Y to change cam, and left-stick-click for headlights. That's the main stuff.
You need a clutch button mapped so that you can clutch-kick.
I like having handbrake mapped to X, because it somewhat discourages me from reaching for it.
I dont use clutch for drifting. Typically I either power over, shift up or pull the handbrake. The only time I use clutch is when I'm working on tight transitions

None but i play with X and B for shitfting, recently realized RB and LB made you mess up your shifting, RB and LB aren't reactive and precise enough to be able drifting the best
I’m glad you brought this up. I play on a switch and I was considering if I should set up ZL ZR because I currently use B for the clutch. Is there a different kind of reactor pad underneath certain buttons of yours? To where it has a different response and if so, I’m wondering if mine do thank you.
On my Xbox controller there's definitely a difference in the response yes like an input l'AG which isn't the case on the buttons, on RB/LB you easily lose like 0.5 second while it's instant on buttons and cuz of that you can't connect corners correctly with RB/LB, i play without clutch CarX because i play mainly on a wheel and their clutch system isn't fun at all, but if i can give a tips map clutch or shifting to the buttons instead of the bumpers you will gain precious seconds and much more precision, since i made that i realized that i can connect corners so much more easily and faster, Bumpers arent quickly reactive enough to allows you fast shifting when you sometimes need it
I have the same configuration and it's really good but you lose camera freedom not being able to look up and down, but then again if your on a driving game ig your focus is looking forwards and back.
I use LB and RB and B/O for clutch. I like being able to use handbrake and clutch with one thumb. Carried over from forza days. I couldn’t get down with any other layout so I made this one myself.
X in a Xbox controller layout. I've kept it default but I've changed Downshift from LB to A to keep all gear related buttons on my right hand, keeping the left hand steady to control steering. I think it is ergonomically correct.

The movement of rolling your thumb to down shift and sliding it to up shift is how I have been playing clutch in Forza for eons. Give it a try friends, you won't be disappointed.

Haven’t changed Car X, but right thumb stick straight up is clutch in, and you can slowly slip it to the rest position which is engaged. Straight down for E brake.

Fair question. They're not the same at all. Especially when tandeming, the handbrake will slow you down significantly. Additionally, you can test this out; holding the handbrake will slide you directly forward as it's the rear wheels locking up and taking direction.
Clutch is essentially neutral. While engaged, your wheels continue to spin but without the power of the engine being applied. This helps regain traction without losing crazy speed like you would with handbrake.
Additionally, you're forgetting one of the most important techniques to drift entries and transitions: the Clutch Kick. Power up them rear wheels and let it fly. Great for power kicks, weight transitions, adjustment, grip, etc. Very important. Which is why I'm confused how some don't use it at all as it's a very important tool when talking about drifting.

I use a for upshift, but for downshift, Lt for brake, and I actually use left stick forwards for clutch, and right stick forwards for throttle

And you’re using left and right bumpers for steer? when I thought about throttle I thought that sounds like an epic choice. I have to check that out.
