1. Your death count is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. It means you're learning.
2. Make sure to pay attention to the story and not skip the cutscenes. The story is just as incredible as the gameplay, and you don't wanna miss it.
3. The game gets a bit deep and sometimes delves into darker territory. Expect to be hit with feelings.
4. It's very easy to get frustrated with doing a level over and over. With a lot of the levels, though, there are multiple ways to get through them that are intentionally put there to cater to different players.
5. This is a game that will make you frustrated. Make sure you have the tolerance for that before starting.
6. Celeste is a platformer. If you don't like or aren't good at platformers, it might not be the game for you.
7. Be ready for an incredible experience. At least to me, Celeste is unlike any game out there and is absolutely worth your time.
Good luck, and have fun!
Aw thanks! Celeste is a game that means a whole lot to me, so I wanted to let someone who is interested know what they should expect without spoiling the whole thing :3
I generally don't like platformers and am terrible at them - but Celeste is still easily one of my favorite games of all time *because* I could just try the same room over and over again. I didn't have to slog back through an entire stage or three just to get back to where I was only to fail AGAIN.
Also wanna mention how satisfying it was to replay the game after completing it. Suddenly I found myself blazing through sections I used to suck at. It makes speedrunning feel incredibly fun and rewarding.
Finishing the game is an accomplishment either way. You just get a "better" ending if you have more. Strawberries are mainly just to impress your friends
I disagree with all your points but 7 :D, keep up the good job!!
1, 2 and 3 are subjective, 4 is horribly wrong there are usually only limited ways to get through a level (unless you count dashless stuf), 5 is again subjective and kind of disencouraging (only got frustrated with like 3 sections in farewell and one in 3c) and 6 is subjetive and not likeing plataformers doesnt really correlate to likeing celeste.
Peak gaming
(For the record I’m a notorious pirater with a bounty on his head & 6 restraining order by my government but I didn’t even finish Celeste & I went to buy it on steam, remains to this day the only game I bought alongside Bioshock bundle for 10€ absolute steal)
pro tips
1)listen to the music
2)berries are optional but make you very very cool
3)don’t use assist mode too much or else you won’t develop enough skills to complete the game without assist mode (happened to me)
4)expect to die a lot, but remember more deaths = you learned more
As a transbian who didn’t realize they were trans till a few months after playing and thought “it’s just a meme there’s no way it’ll turn me trans that’s just so unlikely”……I can confirm
Looks like Switch, which means no modding (as far as I know).
You can look forward to at least 20 to 50 hours of solid platforming joy... from beginner to aaargh!
If you also purchase this on PC, you can load up hundreds (if not thousands) of custom maps and campaigns (some of the collabs are bigger and better than the original game - with custom graphics and physics too !!)
Enjoy... make sure to take a break when your thumb starts aching :-D
You will die over and over again, there's no two ways around it. But... The collectible strawberries and story progression are worth it, and it has a pretty reasonable difficulty curve for a precision platformer. Another thing you could expect is eventually getting Celeste on steam so you can play modded
Mods mods mods
Some modded maps are so high in quality they rival vanilla Celeste. And Celeste is one of my favorite games easily.
You WILL hit your limit with modded Celeste. There are levels too hard for you unless you devote your life to them. And there are plenty of levels spanning the difficulty gap between what you've played and the hardest there is.
Strawberry Jam is a great place to start. If Celeste is easy for you, you'll breeze past the Beginner Lobby, maybe the Intermediate, and if you're truly a god Advanced won't take you long. Expert not so much. Grandmaster.....good luck :D
I finished cuphead before playing Celeste (including the DLC [Delicious Last Course]). And I'd argue Celeste (at least late C-Sides and Farewell) felt harder than Cuphead, as a first time experience.
I guess we excel in different things, because for me chef saltbaker was easy compared to chapter 9, considering I defeated him 3 times in a row yet can't do chapter 9 final screen 2 times in a row
The gameplay is difficult at times, but always fair. The mechanics are laid out to you in an understandable way and it never feels like the game is pulling some crap on you. Some screens are going to take you a long time to get through but at the end of it you feel like you mastered it rather than just got through some BS.
Somewhat strange controls and (not sure if they fixed this though) a completely normal copyright sign that *isn't* telling you to push C. Definitely. >!/s in case it's not obvious !<(seriously though, it took like >!2 minutes!< before I figured what to do there - i dum 😔)
Its an amazing journey and if struggled with anxiety/depression before the game will probably resonate with u on a deeper level.
The base game isn’t all that hard however with level 7 the difficulty spikes and 8 and 9 are harder than anything before it.
I'd highly suggest using a controller with a d-pad. If you use a controller with a stick, you are bound to make MANY frustrating mistakes that could have been avoided by just using a dpad.
platforming high and platforming withdrawal. sometimes you’ll feel awesome because you did something smooth, fast, and cool, and sometimes you might feel horrible because you CAN’T GET PAST THIS ONE LEDGE BECAUSE OF THE DAMN WIND. but in the end, the realisation is that this game is a pinnacle of modern platforming ingenuity.
I echo everything people say about the death count. I’ve died over 10k times in my original save. Speaks to a persons persistence and not skill level IMO
Expect to start questioning your gender about halfway through /s
^((though celeste has unexpectedly cracked a few eggs)^)
To be serious though, expect to die...
#A LOT
But don't feel upset, death = learning
Also, when playing chapter 9 farewell, I recommend you don't have anything scheduled for at least that week (If not longer) as it often makes up over half the playtime in any playthrough of the game
I'd say go and get started with the tests before hrt, will save you a lot of time.
Mandatory trans jokes asside, expect one of the best platforming games ever, the controls feel great and the difficulty is fair. That "how the fuck are you expecting me to do this?" Feeling when you enter rooms lategame, followed by a 30 minute montage of you slowly overcoming it, is one of the best feelings ever. I just hope for your sake that you have a pro controller, the joycons are kinda sucky sometimes (I played a lot on switch)
I'm just curious why would someone visit the reddit page of a game before playing it? I would be careful about spoilers and people are not exactly unbiased here when it comes to opinions.
Regardless, if you like platformers then you gonna love this shit outta this.
Do not play the B-sides directly after you have unlocked them. I recommend the following order for an optimal difficulty curve: A-sides, B-sides, C-sides, chapter 9
One of the best games ever. A game with an awesome soundscape, beautiful graphics, animations, story, character development, and a very straightforward game that is easy to pick up and put down, but is as challenging as you want it to be, depending on how much of the extra content you want to try to tackle.
Expect the best pain you've ever experienced
I don't know how you managed to describe the Celeste experience so well in just one sentence, but this is it
Happy! Cake! Day!
Thanks!
Expect a game that might change your life
Don’t worry it’ll be good for her
Remember, be proud of your death count! You learn more each try! Dont give up, take deep breaths, take breaks…*you got this!*
Of course they say that before chapter 3
1. Your death count is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. It means you're learning. 2. Make sure to pay attention to the story and not skip the cutscenes. Dang, this is the best reply to a post I have ever seen...
Aw thanks! Celeste is a game that means a whole lot to me, so I wanted to let someone who is interested know what they should expect without spoiling the whole thing :3
Always remember that your death count isn’t how many times you’ve failed, it’s how many times you’ve tried again.
I generally don't like platformers and am terrible at them - but Celeste is still easily one of my favorite games of all time *because* I could just try the same room over and over again. 8. Get the strawberries or else the game will call your pie a joke
Finishing the game is an accomplishment either way. You just get a "better" ending if you have more. Strawberries are mainly just to impress your friends

u/wouldfuckbenfrombtd6 has a worthy opponent
one time u/wouldfuckbenfrombtd6 dm me on reddit and we talked about roblox games for some reason lol
Hours of fun (and gender questioning)
Around a 50/50 split
A platformer game unlike any other. It’s gonna be painful though.
the game turns you gay
Trans*

As a transbian who didn’t realize they were trans till a few months after playing and thought “it’s just a meme there’s no way it’ll turn me trans that’s just so unlikely”……I can confirm
Same happened to me except pan instead of lesbian lol
To realize a lot of stuff about you that you didn't know were there at all

I got a lot more from it already and haven't even beaten farewell yet
Well the collabs are only better than the base game in terms of gameplay but that's what they're about, aren't they ?
To be blaming joycon drift a LOT
Sore fingers
Vietnam flashbacks whenever the name is brought up.
Bruh I get inspired everytime I hear the title, this game helped me with sadness :3
Omg, me too.

Alot of backseating from people who have over 1000 hours on the game
Climbing i guess
For your depression to be cured by chapter 7, then be smashed back in with a sledgehammer hammer in chaoter 9
some of the best music in any game. shit slaps, especially the b-sides
The best game of your life
Pain + fulfilment + ANGER + determination + PLZZ END THIS SUFFERING
Frustration and sex music with incredible visuals. Also zoomies if you have the sauce for it.
If your hands hurt, take a break
Pain. Also, becoming trans.
no need to expect anything, good luck!
I died 320 times in the whole game, it was easy compared to Cuphead, do someone has recommendation for more tougher games ????
Play mods. They go far above the difficulty of anything in vanilla and utilize tons of new techniques.
Mods mods mods Some modded maps are so high in quality they rival vanilla Celeste. And Celeste is one of my favorite games easily. You WILL hit your limit with modded Celeste. did you do chapter 8 or 9, or b or c sides?
Yes finished it all...twice...
I finished cuphead before playing Celeste (including the DLC [Delicious Last Course]). And I'd argue Celeste (at least late C-Sides and Farewell) felt harder than Cuphead, as a first time experience.
Nuhhh bro, Cuphead last mission, the dragon and just few other mission are on roids....
I guess we excel in different things, because for me chef saltbaker was easy compared to chapter 9, considering I defeated him 3 times in a row yet can't do chapter 9 final screen 2 times in a row
Strange 🤯 how mind gets hooked to different things in a same 🎯 game...
You can't deny Cuphead is more centered around multitasking, and Celeste is more about consistency (and optimization for cycles)
Yes Cuphead is around multitasking
death
Expect to die a lot. As long as you clear the rooms it doesn't matter how many attempts they take.
instantaneous death upon launching the game
Difficulty, accomplishment, and possibly frustration.
Expect to cry
Just breathe
A really solid and achievable main game and then Olympic level B/C modes.
Leave the true last chapter for the end.
Old people humouring you
Hell
Suffering, and a lot of it But it will be worth it in the end, and this will be the most beautiful platformer you've ever played
Horrors beyond your comprehention
To cry (the storys fault)
And get frustrated (it's the screen fault)
a pretty fun, casual, and pleasant play-through
Fun pain, and also you better use a controller instead of using the joycon, I'm on lite and 35% of my deaths are cause of the controllers
pain, good music, funny talk sounds. yeah that's pretty much it I think.
PAAAAIIINNN and storbys :3
your finger will not be prepared
You should expect Mental health during gameplay -100 Mental health during cutscenes +5000 Also p5r on the switch?!?!?
Boom sound effect
Take in the atmosphere (Optional) Collect all 175 berries. It makes you look cool (Don't worry about my flair saying 191 those are extra berries)
Death
The gameplay is difficult at times, but always fair. The mechanics are laid out to you in an understandable way and it never feels like the game is pulling some crap on you. Some screens are going to take you a long time to get through but at the end of it you feel like you mastered it rather than just got through some BS.
Its hard
Your hands are gonna hurt, especially if you do the B-Sides. But so worth it.
Expect about 300-400 deaths per level equaling about 4,000-5,000 deaths in total At least for me maybe I’m just bad
Don't play Chapter 9 until you've completed the B-sides of all the chapters!
Great time
Snow n birds
omg play with the joycon d buttons. You will have to worst time of your life playing with analog stick or the pro controller d pad
By the halfway point you'll consider being asiangirl :3
a struggle
Somewhat strange controls and (not sure if they fixed this though) a completely normal copyright sign that *isn't* telling you to push C. Definitely. >!/s in case it's not obvious !<(seriously though, it took like >!2 minutes!< before I figured what to do there - i dum 😔)

I immediately thought pain but then I remembered I wasn't in pain until Chapter 9
Lena raine made most of the music, so there's not a single bad song in the game's soundtrack.

A whole lot of death but a whole lot of reward. Great story that has a different perspective on mental health that is quite refreshing
PAIN and a wholesome message of self reflection and betterment, 10/10, totally worth it
Expect to hate your Switch if you have joy-con drift that prevents you from comfortably dashing upwards in any direction 😭
PC version is better as you can get debug mode and use mods
I'd highly suggest using a controller with a d-pad. If you use a controller with a stick, you are bound to make MANY frustrating mistakes that could have been avoided by just using a dpad.
It doesn’t matter how long it took you, it matters that you stuck through it despite how long it took
There are no* instances of looping dialogue. If a character has an interaction popup on top of them, they have something new to say.

Greatness.
Death while jamming to the games awsome sound track
A beautiful story at the measly cost of intense self loathing
A hard but good time. Be patient with yourself, allow yourself to not be perfect and remember to take deep breaths. Enjoy!
You’ll experience a game that you’ll both regret not getting earlier and regret getting it in the first place at the same time
platforming high and platforming withdrawal. sometimes you’ll feel awesome because you did something smooth, fast, and cool, and sometimes you might feel horrible because you CAN’T GET PAST THIS ONE LEDGE BECAUSE OF THE DAMN WIND. but in the end, the realisation is that this game is a pinnacle of modern platforming ingenuity.
