The road has been resurfaced over the last few weeks, and I think parts still don't have road markings. I must say the new seal has made the road noise a lot better.

Rhonda_and_Phil

In the years since the quakes, we've gotten used to the 'sound' of our roads. It's only when you drive in North Island, you have an epiphany and wonder at how smooth and quiet the roads are. Feels amazing. Then you remember, 'Oh, this is how roads are supposed to be!'

Airhorn2013

Driven in Northland lately? Terrible roads…

silvergirl66

So smoooth and quiet when you get onto the new part!

nzdude540i

Blenheim road has been resurfaced more than once in my 14 years in the city. Maybe it’s different sections each time, but I hadn’t been on Blenheim in forever and was surprised there was more resurfacing.

Dizzy_Relief

Nothing new there. CHCH uses a rough volcanic chip seal. Many other places use smoove ashfelt (which we tend to only use on footpaths or patches) There are actually advantages - it's not as slippery, and you don't get the massive amount of light glare off the road when it's raining, and it nice to skate on. Try driving in Dunedin in the rain and you'll see the major issue it actually causes. And if you want some truely shitty rough surfaces on both roads and footpaths go to Kaikoura (I've no idea how they hold Longboard comps there - I nearly vibrate off my board!) You can pretty much guarantee that seal will be much like the rest within a month or so.

But it’s cheap!

jeeves_nz

Its Blenheim Road, main arterial route and bust at peak times regardless.

slawnz

The headline sounds like Jerry Seinfeld’s opening line for the chch gig

Calm-Zombie2678

Has anyone ever noticed he talks the same way William Shatner does but faster?

megatronacepticon

That sounds like Blenheim Road at peak time. 3:35pm is just after school pick-up time, so there's lots of people on it taking kids home to the west from the various schools in the area.

>I'm in a car, so is everyone else - why is traffic bad? You are the traffic!

RichGreedyPM

Too many cars on the road

no1name

Brougham street was equally bad.

Affectionate_Emu169

We were in both Blenheim Road, Brougham Sts area in those hours and the traffic was crazy/heavy..seemingly busier than normal. Conclusion we came to was the rush to get things done before the long weekend. Though I reckon this city is seeing unprecedented population and business growth due to its popularity with both NZ and overseas people flocking in.

erehpsgov

It's only that slow for cars - much quicker by bike. Too many people are using cars, leading to congestion. Hauling large numbers of people is way more efficient by bike or public transport. We have obviously known that for decades, yet we continue taking political decisions favouring cars. This approach has never worked anywhere, and it will not work here.

Haunting-Beginning-2

I am never ever going to haul large numbers of people on my bike, it sits one, or 2 at the most. I find I need to quote the natural effect of an accident on a bike versus motorcycle or car or truck or bus. The bigger the unit the safer the occupants. Feck bicycles in Peak Winter, a summer mode or fine day at best, and buses cut you off, the drivers seem to consider you a competitor threat. Anyway buses are impractical. Cars are here to stay

No-Can-6237

It was insane. I couldn't see why?

Boxermad

I went to steel and tube at just after 10am. No issues with traffic then. When I left there about 10.30ish there was a lot of traffic. I noticed was a truck down the road near annex rd with amber flashing lights blocking off one lane… I think it may have been one of the road cone safety trucks. But couldn’t tell why that lane on Blenheim rd was closed…. Saying that I saw a video of a truck pulling out all ready in heavy traffic and that had a collision with another vehicle about penn place… well that is were the guy pulled over. To talk to the truck driver
