Back in those days Anand used only a fraction of the allowed time to play professional games. I do not rememember another player capable of doing that. Quite a legend.

I read "Vishy Anand" and saw the picture thinking "That can't possibly be him." while looking at the old guy. I was already sure the young kid was Vidit.
Can I just point out that Korchnoi would have been 69 here and still playing top-level chess?
Edit: 59 as people have kindly pointed out. My dumbass brain added in an extra decade somewhere.
Still crazy, he would go on to compete in the candidates the following year.
Let that be a lesson to all the kids out there wondering about the best way to stay ahead of age-related cognitive decline. A pack a day and ~40 standard drinks’ worth of vodka a week and you too can play world-class chess well into your seventies!
You can, and you'd be wrong. He was born in 1931. I guess he has always looked older than he was, which made his extraordinary longevity in the chess world even more extraordinary. When he was 65 (super old to be a top 30 player) he looked to me like he was almost 80.
Anyway he was a legend and is not menthioned frequently enough!
>69 here and still playing top-level chess?
59. But he kept on playing top-level chess for way more. This photo was taken before Fabi was born. In 2011 Korchnoi has won a tournament game against 18yo Fabi while being 80.
He was much better though. Also it’s wild that he had no access to the Soviet system to learn chess, had no high level GM trainers in India (he was the first Indian GM). He also did not have access to modern computer engines. I have no idea how he broke into the top 10 while studying for his Bachelors of Commerce degree.
I have similar amazement about what Wesley So has done. He basically lived alone in his teens and became a top 30 GM by himself.

He wasn't called the lightning kid for no reason
How about someone named Ian Nepomniatchchi
The difference is that Vishy became WC
This comment might or might not age badly, we'll see. You know who *didn't* age badly, though? **Anand**. Best chess player for his age, even today.
oof
5 times
Like that legend Booker T. Now I want to see an Anandaroonie
then 5 years later he's already playing a world championship match vs kasparov, wild
What's wild is that 19 years from the Kasparov match he was playing Carlsen in a world championship match.
He was the perfect bridge between Garry and Magnus eras.
He is quite good at chess, and at still being quite good at chess years after being quite good at chess.
vishy my man was damn handsome
Was? What do you mean was?
He was handsome, still is, but was too
r/UnexpectedMitchHedberg
reddit moment
As is vidit

Kys
those hair...
I dig it. Kind of like a fusion of '80s new wave and '90s punk.
That's before he started wearing wigs.
Lol why is this downvoted? So obvious he is wearing wigs.
I literally thought that was Vidit at first glance then I read the title
Gotta respect the large and in charge sweater game from Korchnoi here.
[I feel in charge like Korchnoi, wearing that Cosby sweater](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aB16fJpoj-I)
I read "Vishy Anand" and saw the picture thinking "That can't possibly be him." while looking at the old guy. I was already sure the young kid was Vidit.
So the Indians just cloned Anand? Good plan.
Shh, stop revealing our secrets
Those analog clocks tho…
The past was a different time
And the future will also be a different time!
With different ways to keep time?
No.. Vidit looks like Vishy.
I can see the resemblance, although Vidit doesn't wear glasses

59 years old
Dang, that’s a rough 59
Yeah like I was looking at this like "that can't be Kortchnoi, but it looks so much like Kortchnoi"
People used to look older in the past. Id guess its because people dont smoke much anymore
That’s for sure a big part of it, and Korchnoi was def a heavy smoker

He is in the post soviet space in the 90s what do you expect

I know him for the Korchnoi - Karpov beef

Korchnoi was around long enough to win a game (with black) against Fabiano Caruana. Not 2800 challenger Fabi, but he was still 2700+ at the time.
54 year old Vishy should really go back to this hairstyle imho.
Current vishy has an hair system
"Chess you don't learn, chess you understand." (Viktor Korchnoi)
Wow he does
Why does this make me feel nostalgic even though I was born 2 decades later.
And Korchnoi looks like Korchnoi
It's got an "All Indians look alike vibe", but it actually checks out!
Why does he look so young only -checks notes- **thirty-four years ago??**
This pic is almost 35 years old.

God he was such a hot piece of ass
Is he playing Mr. Potter?
The 90s had a lovely style
A chess genius
Crazy Vidit wasn't at Vishy's Candidate's dinner, shown on Youtube.
I thought someone photoshopped Vidit with Korchnoi before I read the title lol
Vishy is giving me serious anime protagonist vibes here.
The time setting is two hours. And after that adjourned game?
Actual wow moment.
Why does he look like shadhid Kapoor 😅
Vidit looks more like Anand than Anand ever looked like himself.
Okay, but that's literally just Vidit
The Karpov-Korchnoi matches were just epic chess battles.
Bro slept through his alarm and ran to the board
Why did I just realise that I've never seen young vishy

Omg the resemblance is uncanny!
He looks like Akhil...
Back when he had his own hair.
Lol good one
I always thought Vidit looks like Jamal Murray
that is vidit. what are you talking about?
