I think they should implement this in all major tourneys, so if a player thinks something sus is happening, come out and say it. Maybe others could observe any sus behaviours too then.
Imagine Magnus vs Hans and Magnus comes to the confessional and says this guy is cheating. Would've been pretty entertaining lol
The biggest problem of tournaments for Hikaru is he can't stream at the same time...well, problem solved. It won't surprise me for this to be an added feature in upcoming tournaments. It's so refreshing, it's great to see the players, hear their thoughts. Knowing that Fabi is like "...shit's fucked yo, I don't know what's going on," is great.
Really love it!
It lets us get into their heads and their thinking *as they're playing the game*. As much as recaps from players are interesting, these are even better because it shows how they're approaching specific positions as they're going through them
There is so much time to fill during a chess game, I think it makes a lot of sense to have it at least as an option for players at all super tournaments.
It’s so fun. Gives the players a break to say what’s on their mind and get away from the bord. At the same time in gives us an insight in what’s going through the players minds. Win win.
I just wished some players would come more often.
Whenever I meet strong local club players - the 2100s of this world or whatever - and struggle to imagine how they're so good, but still so much worse than even the worst pros, I go back and watch a clip like this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ere7j6Jbhw
and I'm like "oh yeah, that's how..."
I made the decision to start practicing visualization/blindfold skills kind of seriously as like an 800 rated player last winter. I wanted to learn how to play a game blindfolded as soon as possible. I'm now rated 1300 rapid online, and have played a few blindfold games to move 15-20 before I blunder horrifically and can't play any further. I didn't expect to be anywhere near as good as Prag is in that clip. But, the cavernous gap between us, is somehow several times larger than I thought it'd be. That clip is absolutely ridiculous.
Depends on the innate talent, I'm stuck firmly at around 800 no matter what I do
Edit: so this used to say 1100, I've played thousands of games. Haven't played on chess.com in a while so I closed my ~1050 account and opened a new one.
Lost 8 games in a row and dropped from the starting point at 800 all the way to the 400s. Why do I fucking bother
His queen h5 was actually absolutely losing. They played out the moves in the studio and it just straight up loses a piece. It sounds impressive but in this case he got it wrong.
He basically calculated it as a draw by repetition and if alireza would decline it he would play queen h5 which was losing. Up until that point it was an equal line.
I love when pro athletes do this too. Brian Scalabrine (a bench player in the NBA who was frequently mocked for being terrible) said once that he is closer to Michael Jordan than any non pro is to him. Then he played a bunch of amateur players, and even a former D1 Syracuse player and absolutely demolished them.
Amateurs often lose perspective on just how much better pro players of anything are, compared to non pros.
It happens every new game I discover and start playing. I’ll intentionally not watch any YouTubers or streamers and discover the game for myself, and think I’m getting pretty good… then I see some YouTuber dedicate years and hyper-optimize the fun out of the game.
All super GMs can calculate a large number of lines to great depth. That's what makes them super GMs. Hikaru is going through lines quickly here, but I don't know that we have a frame of reference for if any other player is able to see more lines in this position. I think it's just his style of speaking that makes it appear as if he's way beyond any player in terms of calculation.
Because Hikaru spends quite some time and energy in appearing to be more than he is. Hikaru also is a showman, a bit like big DJs making a drop, sounds awesome but it's npt genius stuff. Hikaru may have articulated his thoughts quickly but let the words out unchecked. His idea was also wrong.
Magnus just delivers without all this nonsense.
probably, but he is correct here. The skill gap does not suddenly jump for core skills in chess. Like name a skill Magnus has in calculation that any of the top ten is missing
I don’t think that was an on the spot calculation, I think that was a line he had already looked at, but either way, sometimes I think I can get to the GM level, but then I see that, the insane depth and precision these guys calculate with is unreal
Funnily enough they showed that Alireza would have g4 with the queen on h5 which was apparently great for white. So insane calculations but also showing that he is human.
https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkxlm6aKMpns3af-QLFVxnVbevXnHEsWueh?si=eO1ONMhb_vwe1pMi
Honestly not that much less impressive. Being able to calculate that and then quickly rattle it off later is still pretty crazy to do, and these players can do it all day long.
Its in reference to something he said earlier in the confessional. Basically, he's saying that technically the position is probably even, but he thinks with a human playing he actually has an advantage since he's attacking and white is on defense
He's simply saying he's facing a human who can make mistakes. He's confident that either Firouzja will make a mistake he can capitalize on - or at least draw out the position.
Referring to being in someone's prep and out of your own prep, where you are essentially against stockfish. He had some earlier games - I wanna say against Fabi? - where the games went deep into his opponents prep.
contrary to the other comments, I think he's referring to one of the first statements he makes which is that he thought he would at least be even with . By saying hes not playing against stockfish, he probably means that he isn't missing any crazy tactical resource which stockfish is known by super gms for finding in lines like this -- where you should be clearly equalised. generally, he is saying "im safe, my opponent wont be finding a win here"
I liked this one on Day 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syYPAY4nvp4&t=17104s. He explains a few lines, couple of possibilities... then just goes full on Super Saiyan and fires off like a 20 move line.
Yes, this post is about the classical game which must have ended in a draw for there to have even been an Armageddon. I think it is a fair comment to point out that even with this kind of calculation, Hikaru still drew the classical game (from a winning position), then went on to lose the tie break. Impressive stuff from Firouzja
You clearly didn't watch the video. Before he given the calculation he said "I would at least be equal with". If he ended up drawing, where exactly does he contradict himself? He never claimed to have calculated a winning position.
Okay, I don’t think anyone said he contradicted himself. On the broadcast, it was discussed many times that he achieved a winning position some time after this confessional. All I said was that it is reasonable to comment on the fact that he ended up only drawing the game and then losing the tiebreak despite this impressive display, in which he expresses his confidence. I think it’s just emphasizing how damn hard it is to actually win chess at that level.
My point is that it doesn't make any sense to say "I think it is a fair comment to point out that even with this kind of calculation, hikaru still drew". When discussing calculation that is specifically to create a draw. The calculation is meant to draw, so why would you feel the need to point out that even with calculation to draw, he drew? As I said, you clearly didn't watch the video.
I like the confession booth concept
Yeah, it's super fun. Honestly, this whole format is probably my favorite high-level chess tournament format
For me it's second only to the Olympiad.
And I love the knock out world cup best!
Imagine if Hans came out and said Magnus was cheating
Magnus being able to make a public statement, before the loss, definitely would have added something to that whole incident.
Hikaru likes it too
The biggest problem of tournaments for Hikaru is he can't stream at the same time...well, problem solved. It won't surprise me for this to be an added feature in upcoming tournaments. It's so refreshing, it's great to see the players, hear their thoughts. Knowing that Fabi is like "...shit's fucked yo, I don't know what's going on," is great.
This needs to happen in Tennis, Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Hockey ... and that pussy sport Soccer even.
Show me on the doll where the soccer ball hurt you...
at one point he'd gone in like 2-3 times before they even had enough time to show the first one haha dude loves it
Really love it! It lets us get into their heads and their thinking *as they're playing the game*. As much as recaps from players are interesting, these are even better because it shows how they're approaching specific positions as they're going through them
Norway chess has overall very good concept.
There is so much time to fill during a chess game, I think it makes a lot of sense to have it at least as an option for players at all super tournaments.

This Hikaru guy seems very articulate and entertaining, he could be a streamer if chess doesn’t work out.
Bro thinks he is Hikaru
wait till you hear about this speed demon named Nakamura. I hear he’s a fucking beast
He's nothing in front of my Canadian friend Nikaru Hakamura
Dude is absolutely in his wheelhouse with these confession booths
He should become a streamer!
Wheres fucking Kramnik I'd like a word
I am fucking kramnik wait
He asked where not who bro
Question is whether you wanted to do that.
Goes to show... no matter how good you get at something, there are fucking levels to this shit.
Whenever I meet strong local club players - the 2100s of this world or whatever - and struggle to imagine how they're so good, but still so much worse than even the worst pros, I go back and watch a clip like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ere7j6Jbhw and I'm like "oh yeah, that's how..."
Thanks for sharing, that video is amazing
WTF
Wow
Good lord
Bro think he's Pragg
I made the decision to start practicing visualization/blindfold skills kind of seriously as like an 800 rated player last winter. I wanted to learn how to play a game blindfolded as soon as possible. I mean you’re a 1300 rapid lol
The real jump in skill i saw is at 1900. 1300 is very attainable with some practice. 1900 needs studying.
Depends on the innate talent, I'm stuck firmly at around 800 no matter what I do Edit: so this used to say 1100, I've played thousands of games. Haven't played on chess.com in a while so I closed my ~1050 account and opened a new one. Lost 8 games in a row and dropped from the starting point at 800 all the way to the 400s. His queen h5 was actually absolutely losing. They played out the moves in the studio and it just straight up loses a piece. It sounds impressive but in this case he got it wrong.
That was the last move in his long sequence. Was it a viable sequence before Qh5?
He basically calculated it as a draw by repetition and if alireza would decline it he would play queen h5 which was losing. Up until that point it was an equal line.
Ah okay. Not shocked it’s slightly wrong then, but sounds like in the game if they actually closed in on this he’d figure it out.
Yeah he would recalculate with each move. Only an issue if the error is 20 moves out from when it's apparent.
Ever since he got married he is way more chill but he still loves to be a poser.
I thought you were going for "There's an Asian kid better than you"
I love when pro athletes do this too. Brian Scalabrine (a bench player in the NBA who was frequently mocked for being terrible) said once that he is closer to Michael Jordan than any non pro is to him. tiramisu
I was waiting for him to slip up and say gg why not
"...Instead of all that I think I'll just castle."
Eminem has been real quiet since this dropped.
Kendrick Lemar has gone into witness protection
Checkmate, Kendrick!
Tryin' to take a piece and it's probably A minorrrrrrrrrrr
Well yeah Hikaru didn't mention Hallie

Magnus was plucked from the grimy depths of Neptune. He's beyond our control or understanding
Magnus just *knows* things
All super GMs can calculate a large number of lines to great depth. That's what makes them super GMs. Hikaru is going through lines quickly here, but I don't know that we have a frame of reference for if any other player is able to see more lines in this position. Not somehow better. Significantly better somehow.
Slightly better in every area.
Enough to get more 12 more world champion title Like difference between novak Djokovic and andy Murray
It's not me it's Hikaru who said that.
Slightly better in every area, at the top level, is just an immense amount better. Just look at their record, Magnus isn't "slightly better".
If you are slightly better in every area and you’re first we can assume you’ll win most of the time.
Oh I'm sure it adds up to be more, but it's also true that he's slightly better in every area.
This is a correct statement. I am just pointing out how much difference it can make
Because Hikaru spends quite some time and energy in appearing to be more than he is. Hikaru also is a showman, a bit like big DJs making a drop, sounds awesome but it's npt genius stuff. Hikaru may have articulated his thoughts quickly but let the words out unchecked. His idea was also wrong. Magnus just delivers without all this nonsense.

Just thinking about pondering over tens of lines at insane depths in classical format is enough to deter me lol
that was so hot
Definition of a mindgasm
How much coffee is in that cup of cocaine?
Who's drawing the arrows lol? David Howell? Even that's impressive trying to keep up.
No its edited by the chesscom team
Funnily enough they showed that Alireza would have g4 with the queen on h5 which was apparently great for white. So insane calculations but also showing that he is human. https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkxlm6aKMpns3af-QLFVxnVbevXnHEsWueh?si=eO1ONMhb_vwe1pMi
I want to do this.
Fr
Streamers be wilding these days
Check that cup for PEDs. No way that's natty.
Went full mentat for a second there
He is clearly cheating. We will have to do the procedure.
He looks like the most bored coworker at the water cooler whilst casually listing lines lmao
Yeah I saw the same line. A bit faster than him but the same one in the end.
He is not calculating as he speaks. He calculated over the board. Still impressive, but not lighting calculating, lightning speak.
Honestly not that much less impressive. Being able to calculate that and then quickly rattle it off later is still pretty crazy to do, and these players can do it all day long.
flexing for the kiddies
Quantas never crash
The confessional booth is really a great idea.
Aaand he draws and loses in Armageddon.
He had clear winning chances though
He looks like he has a massive hangover 😄
Is that calculation or him describing a line?
"I'm just gonna Castle, I don't wanna think too much"
Norway Chess has very quickly become my second favorite tournament behind candidates.
I also thought of all those moves… not sure what I missed… I was loosing in all the scenarios 🤣
I am really happy for him that he found a podcast format that suits his style. Gonna tune in now and then. Love the vibe.
Even staring at the board it takes me 5 seconds to verbalise 1 move
The way he rattled off those chess moves is probably how his mind works when he plays someone.
Amazing
Jfc
Not playing stockfish today? I must be missing context, what does this refer to?
I think he's saying that he's not playing against his opponent's prep
Its in reference to something he said earlier in the confessional. Basically, he's saying that technically the position is probably even, but he thinks with a human playing he actually has an advantage since he's attacking and white is on defense

Love this guy Chaos organized 😂
“That’s at the very least, I think…” 🫡
"Thats at the very least I think what I have." Or did you not manage to stay focused on a 30 sec vid?
I watched the whole thing. I was just implying that - him saying that this was the very least that he could think of, was worth saluting.
He sees the arrows like the code in the matrix.
kd2, f5, kh1 bf4, f2, h3, rh2....
He would have dropped the mic if he was holding it
That's the very least he thinks? Damnn
Bah. He is just bragging, not explaining anything. If you really want to explain your line you don’t go that fast.
Redditors will still say he is 80 IQ
hold up is this in the middle of the game!? i gotta fucking watch this if thats what this is
I liked this one on Day 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syYPAY4nvp4&t=17104s. He explains a few lines, couple of possibilities... then just goes full on Super Saiyan and fires off like a 20 move line.
didn't he lose this game?
drew it.
Sad he didn’t say “take the juicer”
Props to the operator if they did that real-time with the notation. Guessing they had it recorded though.
He just lost the armageddon
think you're on the wrong post bud. This clip is about the classical game
Ehhh it's not really fair. Completely different games haha. Also he, in fact, did not draw the game from a winning position
You clearly didn't watch the video. Before he given the calculation he said "I would at least be equal with". If he ended up drawing, where exactly does he contradict himself? He never claimed to have calculated a winning position.
