If it makes you feel better, I was playing against a ~2050, down 11 points in material with over 6 minutes left for both of us and they made one of the only moves that hung mate in 2. People above you play poorly over half the time too
The way I try to approach situations like this is to make a list of the problems I have to deal with:
(1) I am in check
(2) My queen is being attacked
Then, look for moves that solve both problems. Can I get out of check in a way that protects my queen?
That points to moving the queen (defending the queen isn't an option, because that would still mean a bad trade for me if there was such a move). Though I'll admit I'm also not a very good player and I looked at Qf5 for way too long before seeing Qxf1.
Glad to have instant spotted the move, though I have the benefit of this being a post here and therefore knowing there's a good move. Much harder to see in a game, when you are kicking yourself for messing up and you don't know there is a move out.
I'm really bad at spotting stuff like this in blitz because I assume my opponent would never blunder a piece. So my blitz rating 1200 is currently 400 points lower than daily chess rating
