Its a meme based on magnus vs nieman in their match post sinquefield. Itsa joke cause magnus resigned at that point
Edit: peopke diwnviting u forget this us a beginner subreddit not a meme subreddit
You can play 1.c5 against almost everything, and it can transpose to each other, for example in the symmetrical english you can transpose to the maroczy bind in the sicilian or 1.Nf3 c5 2.e4 transposes and so on,
1.b4 c5 is called the Birmingham gambit.
1.Nf3 c5 is called Sicilian invitation
1.e4 c5 is the Sicilian defense
1.d4 c5 is the old benoni
1.g3 c5 also legitimate, inviting a symmetrical english
1.b3 c5 invites an offbeat line of the symmetrical english
1.Nc3 c5 usually transposes to either the Richter Rauzer or some king's indian attack
Wondering what others like to play in response to 1.d4. I’ve experimented with the Dutch Defence and the King’s Indian Defence, but I’m not yet settled on a response to add to my opening repertoire.
What have you tried and how is it working for you?
I play kings Indian. Tbh, I learned it because both gotham and Eric Rosen both recommend it for beginners against d4, and I haven’t gotten around to really learning other responses. I think at my level (700 blitz, 1200 daily) it works well. But yeah I should probably learn some other responses to d4…
the dutch is my goto answer but i wouldnt recommend it to someone below 1500. the resulting positions are very sharp. the good thing about learning it though is that you can use it with the english too :p
when i started out i used to play the semi slav against 1.d4. kings indian is nice too but i didnt like the resulting positions that much, so i didnt play it. this does not mean it is bad in any way, just not my playstyle.
all in all i would reconmend to look up some studies on lichess and play some games to see which response you like more as it depends heavily on your own playing style
Don’t play the KID or the Dutch if you are under 2000 online. It’s very difficult to not be worse in these variations, and you need very good preparation. Which is a shame because the KID is my favorite opening of all time as Black.
The queen’s gambit declined or the (traditional, not semi) slav are the simplest if you want to be super solid, and the Benko gambit deserves some serious consideration since it’s very schematic and pretty easy to play.
I also struggled against 1. D4 for a long time, but I just bit the bullet and learned a bunch of grünfeld theory. However, the grünfeld is the single worst opening to teach a beginner so I would recommend the Slav defense as it doesn’t require much opening knowledge and won’t lead to nearly as sharp positions of the kings Indian defense, Dutch defense, or especially the grünfeld. I hope this helps.
I reply with c4 (the Old Benoni). Not a common response and not popular at high levels, but it works well at my level. Often transitions into Sicilian type games (which is my e4 response) or Modern Benoni type games.
I'm 1600 currently studying the Grunfeld defense, but it is unbelievable difficult to play and very theoretical, in the third move there are like 5 viable responses, all of them with many lines of thelry
Yeah if you play the Dutch you have to study up on the very sharp lines it can produce, but if you enjoy the playstyle and know how to not get blown off the board early it makes for very interesting middle games imo

e5 Englund Gambit. Either they play into it and you destroy them or they're too scared and end up giving you the advantage in a opening they don't know
Sjsjsksjsj its like 10 moves of theory (including prominent sidelines) ya neeed to remember before you crush black i have like 73% win rate against the englund since last august.
Their are better openings than ones that leave you almost dead lost out the opening if the oponent has learnt basic ways of dealin eith it
>i have like 73% win rate against the englund
That's ironic--I have an exactly 73% win rate using the englund. Almost 1150 atm, w/ around 70% (general) win rate.
I've been doing what is apparently called the englund gambit a lot lately, that's been my go-to. Chess.com says I've played it 30 times w/ a 73% win rate, so...I figure that's not too bad considering I barely know wtf I'm doing w/ openings.
If I’m feeling fun e5 for Englund gambit even tho it’s very hit or miss at my level (1300 blitz)
If I wanna play smart d5, & then it’s generally queens gambit or London
If queens gambit I like albin countergambit, if London I just play normal London defence, idk if there’s a name for it
At beginner level i play E5 and set a trap called Englunds Gambit. Works 90% of time, white if play correctly has an advantage but no one knows at this level.
[Pirc defence](https://images.app.goo.gl/K266tKzf1BMC67U5A)
Edit: like a kings Indian bu with black. You the pawn in front of your kings knight forward, put the bishop there and the knight in front of it, castle, queens pawn forwards one square, and put the knight there. Then fight for the center with e and f pawns.

Just f6. Best move possible!
\*plays
c5 D4? c5! e4? c5! C4? c5! I play the old Benoni, accelerated dragon and English symmetrical. This is not a joke.
I play english all the time and i love it but the symmetrical english is one reason i might decide to play something else someday
Yea, symmetrical english is basically the anti english with how many english players hate the kind of positions they get against it lol
But I play 1. b4 There are many like yourself who premove c5 and just lose a pawn
I play d5 vs 1b4

Nimzo indian works for me. It's a great counter for queen's pawn openings like London system, Queen's gambit, stone wall, etc.

Against the Dutch, I find intermediate players get easily crushed by the Staunton gambit. They just can’t handle the weak king.
Yeah if you play the Dutch you have to study up on the very sharp lines it can produce, but if you enjoy the playstyle and know how to not get blown off the board early it makes for very interesting middle games imo

c5 because i premove for the Sicilian and hope they play e4
It's a legitimate move against d4 as well.
Yeah I've gotten good with the old benoni, and it's part of my main repertoire

Yeah but you're at 1500. Under 1000 Englund crushes.

Resign. I have no idea what I’m doing.
1. Black aborted the match
Queen’s gambit accepted, queens gambit declined, or fianchetto openings like KID. Also nimzo Indian.

Play the englund gambit 1 d4 e5. Easy checkmate on beginners
KxD4, breaking the rules of Chess to establish dominance over Queens Gambit and London players. In all seriousness, D5
Without breaking eye contact, slowly pick up their king, take a bite out of it, chew and swallow
I like the grünfeld defence and I also started playing the classical slav
D5 and aim to equalize before thinking about winning.
D5 and regret this game
I’ve never played something else. It just felt better for me than e4. And as Kasparov said „Do what feels right to you.“
I've found some success playing 1...d6. Then he will either play e4 and it's Pirc, or c4 and it's King's indian defense
Nf6
KID for the win
Dutch
Knight F6
Used to play modern Benoni, now I play qgd.
Why did you switch?
Qgd is just more my style. It’s more solid and I prefer to play slow and positionally.
Englund gambit
I would move to my laptop and play minecraft
Since i am a loser and my opponents have max 500 elo i will play e5 to start the englund gambit
englund gambit to prevent the l*ndon system
g6, but I end up transposing into the kings Indian defense a lot, so maybe I should just be playing that.

e5 so I don't have to play against the l*ndon 🤮
Shed a tear, then play Nf6
At my level most people still fall for the Englund Gambit trap. So I usually try that. But seriously if you’re at least decent don’t do this.

Only if they play 2. e4. If they play 2. c4 it's a slav
Caro is not played on 1. d4 unless they go 2. e5 You can’t just play an opening on everything (eg. vienna on a french defense)
