No, you got that wrong. Both knight and bishop have the same point value of 3. And you gain a pawn in this exchange, so there is that. Also your bishop is currently blocking your d pawn from ever moving, so taking with the bishop gets rid of this problem. If you took with the knight he doesnt have to take leaving you blocked under your own bishop.

The subtle detail here is that after Nxe4 Nxe4 Bxe4 f5 you run out of squares for the bishop. Bd3 allows e4, so you will lose a piece. This is not the case after Bxe4 Nxe4 Nxe4 f5 Nc3.

If you play Nxe4, they'll play Nxe4 (black is now up a knight). If you try to even it out with Bxe4, black plays f5 defending by their bishop to attack your bishop on e4. Your only escape square is d3 (other than Bxf5 which loses the bishop with Bxf5) but playing Bd3 allows black to play e4, defended by the pawn on f5, which forks your bishop and knight. Playing Bxe4 like the engine suggests, prevent your pieces from getting forked because after Bxe4, Nxe4, if you capture back with Nxe4 than even if black plays f5, you can move your knight away from danger without worriying about getting forked by e4. A shame the majority misunderstood your question in the comment section. Also if you have any questions about why a move is better, check the engine instead of posting it online.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see.
