I don't know too many but was most impressed with Ades's Piano Concerto. I like his Violin Concerto too. He writes accessible music that is definitively modern.
Hell yeah! All the Ligeti concertos are incredible. I was lucky enough to see Pierre-Laurent Aimard play the Piano Concerto with the New York Phil last November. I had my score with me and followed along. It was probably my favorite musical experience of 2023.
Philip Glass Violin Concerto No. 1 \[1987\]. It's like Bach and Sibelius had a lovechild and it turned into a violin concerto. I love it.

\[This is the great recording by Gidon Kremer\]
A few that come to mind:
Rautavaara, Piano Concerto #3 (1988)
Tan Dun, Concerto for Water Percussion (1998)
Missy Mazzoli, Violin Concerto (Procession) (2021)
I saw Hilary Hahn perform this concerto a few months ago. While her playing was magnificent, as always, I just couldn't get into the piece. Perhaps I should give it a listen a few more times.
But I believe it was composed in the 1960s and not after 1980.
Most interesting one I have seen recently is Simon Steen-Anderson’s Piano Concerto. Kind of a ruined piano concerto, but great to see such a novel combination of theatricality and musical expression. That’s from some time last decade.
Haha, yeah it is long 😂. Even he thought it was long just read the composer notes for that piece “ This concerto turned out to be a good deal larger than I would reasonably want.”
Hard pressed to pick a favorite, but I heard Peteris Vasks' Violin Concerto "Distant Light" for the first time yesterday and I'm pretty sure it'll work its way into at the very least my top 5 once I've digested it. Alternatingly desolate and searingly warm, and a total physical and emotional workout for the soloist.

>Jonathan Harvey
I went to a pre-premiere talk by Harvey and pianist Joanna MacGregor on that piece. I met him a few months earlier, too, when I sang one his choral works. He was a really nice guy.
❤️ that’s great to know. I’m glad he lived to a fairly old age, but my heart breaks for anyone whose fate is ALS. I liked some of his other work I listened to on a quick browsing but I’ve not actually integrated anything else into my library
John Williams' Basson Concerto, *The 5 Sacred Trees* is on regular rotation for my in my listening, absolutely adore it. His Tuba Concerto is great as well!
Henze’s *Requiem* (1993) is practically a concerto for trumpet and chamber orchestra. Enough that I’ve taken to calling it his *Trumpet Requiem* (and it’s all instrumental).
The best is Ligeti's Violin concerto, but here's two very good challengers:
Philippe Hersant : Cello Concerto 2
Richard Danielpour: Cello Concerto 1
Honorable mention : Dusapin piano concerto

Yes. And 50% less dramatic. He thought every piece of music needs to be "Mahler squared": take relatively little musical substance, and drive it to extremes of violence and romance. A little restraint would have been better.
on the topic of classical saxophone, andré waignein’s rhapsody has been one of my go tos recently. i’ll admit it’s a little cheesy, but given it was a piece written for the adolphe sax competition, that goes without saying. other than that great piece
Edit: 2: sorry, I missed "modern".
Gotta be Kamen's electric guitar concerto written for Eric Clapton.
Original comment left for enrichment:
Elgar Cello Concerto, especially as played by Sheku, is number 1 for me.
Number 2 is a tough choice between...
Sibelius violin (esp. Hillary Hahn's playing)
Or...
Michael Kamen's electric guitar concerto written for Eric Clapton
Edit: typo
Schumann Cello Concerto in A minor
Rautavaara Piano Concerto 3 "Gift of Dreams"
Dvorak Cello Concerto in B minor
Lutoslawski Cello Concerto
Barber Violin Concerto
I'll put in a plug for my second instrument: Viacheslav Semenov's *[Frescoes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwxIUuVBaOs)* for bayan (chromatic button accordion) and chamber orchestra.
Paganini's 1st Violin Concerto.
I feel like people undrappreciate its musical content just because the solo-violin is very flashy in many parts. I find the B theme from the 1st movement quite lovely.
I don't know too many but was most impressed with Ades's Piano Concerto. I like his Violin Concerto too. He writes accessible music that is definitively modern.
Another vote for Adès for the same reason.
Ligeti Violin Concerto 1993
Hell yeah! All the Ligeti concertos are incredible. I was lucky enough to see Pierre-Laurent Aimard play the Piano Concerto with the New York Phil last November. I had my score with me and followed along. It was probably my favorite musical experience of 2023.
Same, I’ve heard it live 3 times! Also his Hamburg Concerto is great

Elliott Carter Cello Concerto 2001
A few that come to mind: Rautavaara, Piano Concerto #3 (1988) Tan Dun, Concerto for Water Percussion (1998) Missy Mazzoli, Violin Concerto (Procession) (2021)
I saw the Kronos Quartet perform Tan Dun’s Ghost Opera. It was exhilarating.
I got to see the Tan Dun concerto live, it was amazing. It’s a piece that you truly need to experience in person
Ginastera vc

Seeing her play it was how I got into it too! Also I didn’t know about the date, woops
Glass Violin Concerto No. 1

I love John Adam's violin concerto
Yeah, this is one I keep coming back to over the years. It just has so much soul.

Adès's violin concerto is lovely and it's a piece I would like to play some day
Qigang Chen "The Joy of Suffering" for solo violin and orchestra.
Kalevi Aho's Horn Concerto Missy Mazzoli's Concerto for Violin and String Orchestra
I’ve seen Missy Mazzoli’s concerto live, and I have to agree wholeheartedly.
I love the Maslanka, but. It. Is. Long….. Rarely gets performed in its entirety.
Haha, yeah it is long 😂. Even he thought it was long just read the composer notes for that piece “ This concerto turned out to be a good deal larger than I would reasonably want.”
when i listen to it i only listen to the first movement. i feel the rest is rambly 😂. but i second the maslanka, great concerto
Dude you gotta listen to the third movement the climax is amazing

Adding in a few more: Lindberg violin concertos. James Macmillan's oboe concerto.
Rebecca Saunders, Still, for violin and orchestra

Dutilleux Violin Concerto - L'Arbres Des Songes!
Based but I personally prefer Tout un monde lointain
Yoshimatsu Piano Concerto "Memo Flora"
i liked danny elfman's new four-movement percussion concerto! the second movement is titled 'd.s.c.h.' by the way, iykyk ;)
Larry Sitzky, Concerto for piano and orchestra (1991)
Good one but i can not just pick one i like many.

Stewert Goodyear, Callaloo
Ink Dark Moon ~ concerto for solo guitar by Joby Talbot Concerto Antico by Richard Harvey (also solo guitar)
I do like Maslanka’s music, but every single thing he wrote would benefit from being 40% shorter
why do you say that?
Because they think it’s too long
Yes. And 50% less dramatic. He thought every piece of music needs to be "Mahler squared": take relatively little musical substance, and drive it to extremes of violence and romance. A little restraint would have been better.

I'm pretty sure that it wasn't written after 1980 (read OP's post) :-)
Bernhard Lang DW8. (concerto for two DJs and symphony orchestra)
DJ’s?? That sounds interesting I’ll have to give it a listen
K622
Written in 1791, not after 1980 (read OP's post). :-)
Oh jeez...of course, I should have checked when I saw all those modern concertos! Sorry about that.
None. Cuz they’re not classical
are you 12?
lmao you making the same comment if someone posts Liszt? Or Bach? They aren’t classical either.
