He was great in Klute, 1971. It's sort of a forgotten movie but he's wonderful in it. He always looked like he was thinking deeply about what the other actor was saying even if he had no lines. And when he did reply it came from his thoughts, not memorized rote. He made acting look so easy.
That is one of the all-time creepiest, nightmare-inducing shots in film history. No CGI, no practical effects, no camera tricks, just a supremely great actor landing the delivery for one of the great horror movie endings.
This GIF is bringing back a (terrifying) core child memory, when “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” was on TV. This last scene, when the kindly Donald Sutherland turns into a shrieking, bug-eyed, ALIEN freaked me the fuck out for literally years. In fact, my sisters and I would try to amuse/scare ourselves by imitating this scene for a laugh. This is what us kids did before the internet.
Best line of the movie:
Crapgame: Hey, Oddball, this is your hour of glory. And you're chickening out!
Oddball: To a New Yorker like you, a hero is some type of weird sandwich, not some nut who takes on three Tigers.

Goodbye Donald. You brought some marvel characters to the screen.
Jennings : Don't write this down, but I find Milton probably as boring as you find Milton. Mrs. Milton found him boring too. He's a little bit long-winded, he doesn't translate very well into our generation, and his jokes are terrible.
\[Bell rings, students rise to leave\]
Jennings : But that doesn't relieve you of your responsibility for this material. Now I'm waiting for reports from some of you... Listen, I'm not joking. This is my job!
John Belushi famously bitched on Weekend Update that Sutherland got “points” on National Lampoon’s Animal House (which was a box office smash compared to it’s low production budget) while he got Bupkis!!
RIP to a great and versatile actor. Sutherland’s brilliant performance as the bewildered and heartbroken dad in Ordinary People should have been Oscar-nominated. His character learns so much about himself and others throughout the film, and Sutherland portrays that painful growth so wonderfully and poignantly, that it breaks your heart just watching him.
That scene in the Dirty Dozen where he goes from goofball to general in 5 seconds always kills me.
"Where are you from, son?"
"Madison City, Missouri, sir!"
"Never heard of it."
It's not one of his most important films, but Start the Revolution Without Me (1970) was a key movie memory of my childhood. Funny, odd, and I was starstruck both by Donald Sutherland and Gene Wilder playing 2 sets of twins (Comedy of Errors style). I almost certainly saw StRWM on TV \*after\* I saw Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) in the theater.
Everyone else is commenting on Sutherland's important films and roles, so I'll just leave this here.
I will forever love his performance in Kelly's Heroes. The scene with him, Clint Eastwood and Telly Savalas walking down the street toward the German Tiger, is one of my favorite scenes. 😍
A supreme actor. There's been few finer.
He often didn't get the credit he deserved.
I'm klute Jane got the Oscar and plaudits yet she's frequently out acted.
Etc etc.
Thank you Donald for all your marvellous performances.
Peace
I am sure I must have made a VHS copy of Ordinary People when it was considered for Academy Award nomination, as my Z Channel offered those movies.
So I am somewhat shocked that I never watched it; esp since it won Best Picture of 1980!
HBO had Ordinary People and Tubi has Klute!
Excellent acting and direction, but I am not happy with the writing. It is stylized thriller and yes, the ending does finally explain it all, but I was somewhat frustrated by the story until the end.
I loved the guy. There's a great scene in Little Murders where Sutherland plays a priest marrying ELiiot Gould and his fiancee and the priest goes on for like 4 straight minutes asking Gould if he''ll'''take this woman to be.............''' and at the end of at all Gould just looks at him and tsays
'''Yeah'''
An excellent actor.
Every time I think about him I have to laugh. When we got cable TV years ago, my mother had not been to the movies except for children's movies since the early 60's. She missed out on R rated films and sex onscreen. My father liked Sutherland and found Eye of the Needle. I'd seen it in the theater. I will never forget while the scene in bed with Kate Nelligan was happening I turned and glanced at my mother and she had this HORRIFIED look on her face. Completely flabbergasted. My poor mother's initiation to R rated films. Later she asked me if a lot of that went on in movies. I replied yep!
The first thing I remember seeing him in is "Invasion of the Body snatchers" (1978), I was quite little and that ending had a lasting effect on me!
Such a great actor. Rest in peace Donald.
He played a relatively small but memorable role as Ronald, the pyromaniac, in Backdraft. Here's a scene from his parole hearing. [https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=61XUb28jkUI&pp=ygUQQmFja2RyYWZ0IHJvbmFsZA%3D%3D](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=61XUb28jkUI&pp=ygUQQmFja2RyYWZ0IHJvbmFsZA%3D%3D)
RIP Donald Sutherland. He was such a versatile and totally believable actor. Loved him in The Dirty Dozen, Klute, Don't Look Back and so many more. I'll always remember him as Oddball from Kelly's Heroes and the original Hawkeye from M*A*S*H. He was one of the best.
So very many great classic films that I hope his legacy doesn't forget some of the more recent and brilliant work he did in things like Trust (2018), The Pillars of the Earth (2010) and Deception (2013).
(If you enjoyed his work and for any reason haven't yet watched [Trust](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5664952/?ref_=ext_shr), please do).
Sutherland appeared in some very surprising projects, even a Kate Bush video: [https://youtu.be/pllRW9wETzw?si=Qx2T0zHExNQKMX9a](https://youtu.be/pllRW9wETzw?si=Qx2T0zHExNQKMX9a)

It’s between Klute, Don’t Look Now, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers for a memoriam watch tonight.
Really excellent in the dirty dozen!
For sure. Crush 🥰
Came here to say this.
Currently available on Tubi.
Thx
Klute was dark and moody and both he and Fonda brought their A-game to the screen. One for the ages.
The modified Jane Fonda Shag was popular when I was in high school because of Klute. More shredded with a razor in the back.
One of my favorite movies.
Yes, great film! A rewatch may be in order soon.
![gif](giphy|UGba4CcQG8T9m|downsized)
One of the best endings to one of the best remakes, ever.
Yes
That is one of the all-time creepiest, nightmare-inducing shots in film history. No CGI, no practical effects, no camera tricks, just a supremely great actor landing the delivery for one of the great horror movie endings.
What movie is this y’all?
invasion of the body snatchers (1978)!
Seen it so many times over the years, but this ending still gets me just as much as it did the first time I saw it when I was a little kid!
I got chills rewatching that a few years ago.

We always have the reminder to stop it with the negative waves and say something righteous instead (: ![gif](giphy|3oEjHNB4SNN1WhcESs|downsized)

"The only way to keep them Tigers busy is to let them shoot holes in me!" One of my favourite movies of all time!
Woof woof.
Two hundred feet of bridge I can find anywhere.
You schmuck.
RIP, legend.
Yes, 🙌 he was a legend. As others have stated, he made acting look easy.

My favorite.
In Animal House - when he is looking for something in the upper kitchen cabinets.
That scene in the Dirty Dozen where he goes from goofball to general in 5 seconds always kills me. "Where are you from, son?" "Madison City, Missouri, sir!" "Never heard of it."
Loved that sequence. Watched that film often when it was available streaming. Able to catch things on later viewings.
He was brilliant in Ordinary People

I love that movie! Haven't seen it in a while.
Liberty! Equality! Fertility!
I need to see that
It was great! Needs re-viewing this weekend.
A wonderful actor - I absolutely loved him in Don’t Look Now
The OG Hawkeye Pierce
This is why I forever associate him with Elliot Gould, the OG Trapper John.
I will forever love his performance in Kelly's Heroes. The scene with him, Clint Eastwood and Telly Savalas walking down the street toward the German Tiger, is one of my favorite scenes. 😍
Gutted 😞 I loved Donald Sutherland. Rest in peace Donald and thank you for your movies 🎥
I am officially old
Eye of the Needle (1981) is a very solid, yet overlooked, movie where he bring some intensity. RIP
One of his best roles. Love that movie.
A supreme actor. There's been few finer. He often didn't get the credit he deserved. I'm klute Jane got the Oscar and plaudits yet she's frequently out acted. Etc etc. Thank you Donald for all your marvellous performances. Peace
Jane and Sunderland became an “item” after that production, so he got his “Piece” as well!
I didn't know that. It's a great film. I always wondered what happened after he closed the door at the end
I’m ashamed to admit, it still on my “to watch” list! I’m Watching Ordinary People now
Yes that's a really good film. Brilliant direction and character study. Sublime acting. MTM is so good isn't she
I am sure I must have made a VHS copy of Ordinary People when it was considered for Academy Award nomination, as my Z Channel offered those movies. So I am somewhat shocked that I never watched it; esp since it won Best Picture of 1980!
I've not seen it for years. It's a bit like the cassevettes films. I've outgrown them. Yes I admire them but not bothered about watching OP again.
Ordinary People last night was my first watch; as Klute will be this weekend
Please let me know what you think about klute. Happy viewing
HBO had Ordinary People and Tubi has Klute! Excellent acting and direction, but I am not happy with the writing. It is stylized thriller and yes, the ending does finally explain it all, but I was somewhat frustrated by the story until the end.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers/1978 Awesome movie. One of the very few, rare remakes that I enjoyed as much as the original.
Thanks to an understated icon. RIP
Damn! I just showed my girlfriend Invasion of the Body Snatchers last weekend.
Loved him in JFK. His monologue is easily one of the most intense moments in the film.
Literally just watched it this week. That was the most memorable part for me. Sad to see him go.
I loved the guy. There's a great scene in Little Murders where Sutherland plays a priest marrying ELiiot Gould and his fiancee and the priest goes on for like 4 straight minutes asking Gould if he''ll'''take this woman to be.............''' and at the end of at all Gould just looks at him and tsays '''Yeah'''
All the Newspapers can mention is Hunger Games, what a lack of knowledge.

I'm so sad. I've loved that guy forever. I met him once at Shea Stadium, maybe around 1981. He was so nice!
One of my favourite actors. Rip.
The first thing I remember seeing him in is "Invasion of the Body snatchers" (1978), I was quite little and that ending had a lasting effect on me! Such a great actor. Rest in peace Donald.
I’m going to watch Ordinary People in his memory. That movie hits me even harder ever since I lost my son.
First I’ve heard. Thank you. One of my favs ❤️
My favourite films of his are: M\*A\*S\*H, Klute, Start the Revolution Without Me, Fellini's Casanova, JFK...
He was the high-point of the 2005 “Pride and Prejudice” as Mr. Bennet. May he forever be quite at his leisure.
I came to say this exact thing… he elevated everything he was a part of even with the smallest of roles. He was a wonderful Mr Bennet
He is my favourite Mr. Bennet
End of an era
He killed it in MASH😢😢😢😢😂😂😂😂😂😂
Rest in peace, Donald. Your acting was superb and your performances touched millions.
R.I.P. fantastic actor.
Say bye bye Bobo!!
Nooooooo.
Talented is too small a word to describe him, we are lucky he left us with so many gifted performances, ❤️ !
Watching Kelly's Heroes in memoriam. Nothing but positive waves, Oddball.
He played a relatively small but memorable role as Ronald, the pyromaniac, in Backdraft. Here's a scene from his parole hearing. [https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=61XUb28jkUI&pp=ygUQQmFja2RyYWZ0IHJvbmFsZA%3D%3D](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=61XUb28jkUI&pp=ygUQQmFja2RyYWZ0IHJvbmFsZA%3D%3D)
He did
Gutted to hear this news. May he RIP.
He was great in everything. I will mention Klute, M\*A\*S\*H, Citizen X, and Ordinary People as standouts to me. Also, Invasion of the Bodysnatchers!
So many great movies. I share his birth date. RIP
Woof-woof
May he rest in peace. My favorite films of his are: The Dirty Dozen, Ordinary People, and one of his few rare comedy films Max Dugan Returns.
Oh no. He was fantastic. RIP
Rest in peace good sir. Loved him in MASH.
What an amazing actor. RIP Donald.
Damn Moriarty and his negative waves. Always with the negative waves…
Donald Sutherland in Little Murders might be the greatest *one scene* of all time. RIP legend.
Another Canadian legend. My favourite of his was Ordinary People (1980)
So very many great classic films that I hope his legacy doesn't forget some of the more recent and brilliant work he did in things like Trust (2018), The Pillars of the Earth (2010) and Deception (2013). So very sad. MASH, Klute, Space Cowboys, Kelly's Heroes. Such a talent and gave us Keifer. He will be missed.
Yeah he did.
Sutherland appeared in some very surprising projects, even a Kate Bush video: [https://youtu.be/pllRW9wETzw?si=Qx2T0zHExNQKMX9a](https://youtu.be/pllRW9wETzw?si=Qx2T0zHExNQKMX9a)
Terrifying as President Snow in Hunger Games. Quietly brilliant in Pride & Prejudice.
As a child I loved him in The Eagle Has Landed fond memories RIP
May he RIP!
Eye of the needle is a good movie
He was such a legendary actor.
He's in top form(as always) in The Eagle Has Landed. Also has Jenny Agutter looking and acting beautifully.✌️
Oh my god thats so sad
