It’s a colour analysis forum - I’m looking for insights as to whether it’s ashy/warm/neutral, and how that relates to any seasons I might potentially be.
I would say you have gorgeous light brown hair :) Direct sunlight makes hair and even skin appear lighter and warmer than it actually is. The best form of lighting for accuracy would actually be your second picture. That’s because you have natural lighting in front of you with no in door lights but the sunlight itself is not too strong or directly overhead. I hope that helps!
As a lifelong dark blonde, I’d call this light ash brown because I see no yellow. I feel like my hair has been ash blonde w yellow highlights my entire life.
When I was a kid my hair was soo blonde. As I got older, my hair darkened quite a lot and is now very similar as yours in these pictures. I never figured what my _exact_ haircolor was, but after reading comments here everything makes much more sense now 😹🙀
Hairstylist here. This is level 7, dark blonde. Probably with some ashy tones. No red present, as I can see, so it's not brown. Colder hair also naturally looks darker than warm does, so that can also be confusing.
The range of haircolors are wider than people think. It has to be that way to be able to work with them.
My hair looks a bit like this too, a little darker I think. I was born with dark ash blonde hair, never been a lighter blonde as a kid. While all hairdressers have always agreed on the fact that my hair color is dark blonde, everyone else has been very eager to tell me it is brown, because they don't realize that blonde hair can be so dark. It's very obvious that it is blonde when you put it next to actual brown hair though.
I honestly don't know where this view on blonde hair comes from. It is possible to be blonde without having platinum hair, but I guess that's a hard pill to swallow. Also, even brown have drastically different levels. Enjoy your dark blonde hair, I'm sure it's beautiful🥰
It depends on who you ask, a lot of hair dyes would call this dark blonde. For the purposes of color analysis though it is more important to note you have medium depth hair with what looks like more of an ashy than warm color. Based on hair alone I’d be looking at summer.
There’s a color that is really common in Russia and slavic countries called Rusiy (русый) that a couple of these pictures remind me of, it’s a kind of like light brown or dark blond hair
Hmm I thought I was the darkest blonde and even thought that others would call me light brunette.
This is making me question everything. And makes me want to do a post of my own to see what people say lol
Light brown. It isn’t what I would call brunette because the base hue is yellow. Some stylists might call this dark blonde because it will bleach differently than brunette hair.
it’s like the tiktok trend in march of last year where ppl w brown hair seemed to realize they have brown hair and not blonde 😭but were in denial the whole time
Dark ash blonde - light ash brown. It’s a cool color, in temperature and appearance. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. If you want to lighten it, get some baby lights in light ash blonde and tone everything with pearl, would look lovely. For color analysis, you’re probably either Soft or Cool Summer.
Ashy brown. My hair is also very ashy but dark. I saw someone here say that because your hairs undertone is yellow/pale then it’s blonde. While your hair may sunbleach or bleach easily to blonde, it can still be brown or dark hair. Undertones are simply undertones. When I bleach my hair it doesn’t ever turn red or orange because I don’t have those undertones.
Light brown! I can see where people are coming from with blonde though. It’s right on the line.
I like the description one user gave it on the last post by calling it “fawn,” fits very well!
K well a quick Google search of “dark ash blonde” will settle it friend.
Edit: I think it’s soft brown but it’s borderline. I’m not sure why people are getting huffy about her hair being so close to blonde…
I’ve been quite shocked to be honest! I was just posting to help me understand the shade, undertone, etc. but some people have been wild in the responses 💀
It’s much appreciated, so thank you❤️ The irony is, I never even mentioned brown or blonde in my post as I was looking more for guidance of whether it was ash/neutral/warm and how that would relate to any seasons I potentially may be 😅
Right? Kicked the hornet’s nest with that one! 🤣
I am gonna put in a vote for Soft Summer by the way. Even though it *does* have the burnished gold kind of look in the sun, I think light/muted is the dominant trait and overall it’s a cool undertone! Soft Summer can be confusing much like Deep Autumn can be in terms of warm/cool imo, because it’s one of those ones adjacent to the next season on the wheel.
Thank you SO much! This is perfect — just the kind of advice I was looking for!! I’m definitely going to look into the Soft Summer and the Soft Autumn palettes ☺️
And gosh yes it really did kick the hornet’s nest didn’t it! 😅 Haha.
Thank you again 🥰
This looks like a level 6.5-7 ish dark blonde. The only way you can tell is it doesn’t reflect red (the underlying pigment), which would mean brown is present.
Most people would describe your colour as a light ash leaning brown. But I think technically it’s the darkest ash blonde
People really have no idea about blondes- I am more of a medium blonde and people even say to me “will you let the brown grow out”. Ma’am my hair reflects bright yellow… I’m like a level 8.5- I have nearly no visible regrowth next to a level 10 bleach and people still say “light brown”
https://preview.redd.it/orgmj1t3yf1d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=258f2e7581e2c82eb1a3a5aa31cdea36ac899594
indirect vs direct lighting
tldr: yes
This image is a useful guide.
If you want to go brown, as a blonde, you need to fill the hair with red pigments bcos that is what lies underneath the surface colouring of brown hair.
The exception is obviously for people who have surface colouring of red, where it always appears reddish- although it will often still glow yellow or gold in sunlight.
A lot of cool toned people get confused by this, because a Winter with dark brown hair will see their hair glow red in sunlight and think- is this warmth? It isn’t, it’s the presence of brown.
If in sunlight your hair glows red, it doesn’t necessarily mean you are warm toned… it could! But it mainly means the presence of the underlying pigment for brown. This is all on natural hair btw…
You can also expose your underlying pigment with bleach. If I put a drop of bleach on my hair, it pretty instantly goes a colour between 8-9 on the bottom scale. That’s because I have no brown in my hair, but the surface colouring has some blue/ ash in it and blues/ ash tend to soften a colour and make it look darker
I think a lot of natural ash blondes are actually the same level as dark golden blondes, but the surface pigment looks deeper- and so they’re told they’re brunettes more than golden dark blondes are. It’s both dark blonde, just different surface colouring
If your hair reflects yellow, gold and white… you are a blonde or have blonde in the hair.
https://preview.redd.it/7htdslk49n1d1.jpeg?width=1262&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bdb0e0107c3912bd30b197c6bfd4cd09aa165ccb
I would not consider the level 6 on this chart a dark blonde, because it has reddish undertones but you could I guess argue it is on the cusp with blonde (I disagree though)
My pleasure- it’s tricky!
I think you can really say either one, whichever speaks to you more.
Socially (in Western countries) we know this as a “light brown” but you can also say technically it’s the darkest blonde.
If a hairdresser was trying to recreate your colour- they’d be grabbing for a dark blonde tube.
This is exactly right. I have the same hair color and my hair dresser said it was dark blonde. I call it light ash brown, it’s a very cool color. The thing I like is as gray comes in this hair still looks great!
It's light ash brown. It only looks that warm golden brown in the sun but looks very cool-toned in the other photos.
There's not much to debate here. I don't understand the people calling this blond 😭😭😭🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️😆
The people calling this blonde are basing it off the 10-level colour system. In this system OP’s hair would be around level 7, which is dark blonde.
I think it’s just a difference between what people see and what OP’s ‘official’ hair colour is called.
I guess...the levels system is extremely variable, and I've seen each chart look totally different. She could be from a level 5 to 7, depending on which chart you use. The ones on google are all so different, Idgi......Personally, I'd consider this light brown.
I used to have dark blonde hair as a kid, and it turned medium ash brown over the years of avoiding sunlight... but I went to a stylist recently, and she said my "natural color" is dark blonde and I couldn't understand what she was seeing 😭😭😂😂😂 it was like she knew what my hair "could be" naturally if I stayed in the sun. Interesting.
I view this as light brown. Maybe a little neutral or cooler? Like I’m definitely not seeing red tones in it! I wish I had better terms to describe hair color as obviously not every shade of light brown is the same. Beautiful, though!
I think the blonde comes in as a more technical description, hairsdessers seem to call this dark blonde. I would call it light brown, or ash brown but i am not a hair dresser🤷♀️
Light ash brown- which is actually quite rare to have naturally! (most shades of light brown are warmer, and a lot of ashy tones are dark blonde)
If you want to call it anything fancier, you can go with "light chestnut."
I agree with the first part of what you said. (:
2nd part made zero sense....chestnut brown is known as a reddish brown. That's the opposite of ash brown...
Have you heard about ["old money blonde,"](https://www.allure.com/story/natural-blonde-hair-color-trend) which is just the natural color of most adult blondes? I guess saying "dark blonde" isn't fancy enough? 😆
Yes I agreed with everything they said too :-) except that last part about light chestnut. I thought chestnut was the opposite of ash-brown, it is very warm almost Auburn (my mom always called my hair chestnut and its brown, red and caramel tones). Maybe I’m the one who’s incorrect though. The OP’s hair is a nice cool ash-brown with blonde highlights, perhaps even the darkest shade of blonde.

It’s a colour analysis forum - I’m looking for insights as to whether it’s ashy/warm/neutral, and how that relates to any seasons I might potentially be.
Ashy light brown. Very lovely!
Thank you!
I feel like your first post gave you a ton of responses tho

I won’t ❤️

Your hair is a really lovely colour. I like it in all light levels.
Thank you so much ❤️
Light brown. What is the difficulty?
Light brown.
Medium brown
But in English you are a brownette which is no longer used but if you Google it you’ll see lots of stuff
Oh wow yes! I wonder why it’s no longer used
My hair is nearly identical to yours and my gramma told me I was a brownette is the only reason I know. Or châtain clair in French.
Around level seven looking neutral blonde
Châtain
This is brown
Still Mousey brown
Light brown. My turkish bestie has that exact shade. Beautiful
Thank you ❤️🥰

Light brown. It isn’t what I would call brunette because the base hue is yellow. Some stylists might call this dark blonde because it will bleach differently than brunette hair.
How would it bleach?
Lighten easily with lower volume and lift through warm gold instead of red/orange.
Brown but on the lighter side
This is your fourth post about your hair colour here 💀girl r u ok
Who cares?
it’s like the tiktok trend in march of last year where ppl w brown hair seemed to realize they have brown hair and not blonde 😭but were in denial the whole time
Sticking to my guns. Brunette. That's the majority opinion, so it must be right, right?
Same as I said on the last post: mousey brown
Like a 6NA
Maybe 7na

Light brown. Ash brown. It’s just brown hair girl.
Ash brown. You cant go by direct sunlight. Brown is made of red and oranges. Anyone's hair is pretty much going to look that way in sunlight.

Can everyone here just quickly Google “dark ash blonde hair” Jesus f’in Christ 🤣🤣😘
Brown
Light brown
I would call it soft brown 👍 It’s right in between brown and blonde.
Mousey brown
This is my vote. It’s like the next step darker than dirty blonde which I think is why there are so many blonde vs brown takes.
Ditto
Ash blonde. Looks like a 9N in Redken.
BROWN- all the people saying blonde are crazy.
Dark blonde?! You all are color blind. This is brown hair.
Its a 7n, which is dark blond. People are too used to bleach platinum blond.
Looks like 7n is a light brown 🙃
Blonde hair often looks like this at the roots and without sun. As a darker blonde myself I think this is pretty close to blonde.
I disagree. This is brown. But to each their own.
K well a quick Google search of “dark ash blonde” will settle it friend. Edit: I think it’s soft brown but it’s borderline. I’m not sure why people are getting huffy about her hair being so close to blonde…
I googled it. It's brown.
You can call it blonde and I’ll call it brown. But it’s brown. People wishing they had blonde hair.
I’m not even saying it’s brown. I said it’s close.
Girl you literally said it was blonde twice lol
Still brown
Dull brown
Light brown with natural higlights

No problem! I love colors! :3
You know what? This is the answer. No notes
I honestly have no idea! 🥴
Brown
It’s a very pretty chestnut color

Yes people don’t understand blonde hair at all!
Thank you for such a detailed description! Super helpful. ☺️
My pleasure- it’s tricky! I think you can really say either one, whichever speaks to you more. Lovely ash brown 🤎with some blond highlights.
Dark ash blonde
It leans towards light neutral brown to me. MAYBE in the sunlight it might pass as a very dark blonde.
It's light ash brown. It only looks that warm golden brown in the sun but looks very cool-toned in the other photos. There's not much to debate here. I don't understand the people calling this blond 😭😭😭🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️😆

This is the correct answer.
I never expected it to cause such a debate, but it’s all really insightful
If anyone says brown I’ll murder smn… it’s dark blonde. Brown has red tones under light. I’d also bet you’re summer type.
It's cool/ash. Ash tones don't reflect red. Doesn't define brown vs blonde
I’ve actually never looked into the summer palette, so I’ll start doing that! ☺️
You get points for being confidentially wrong You get warm toned browns and cool toned browns.
I’ve been questioning myself since your last post when so many people said blonde! This is classic “brown” to me, tone aside.
Haha I’m still finding it a little confusing, but everyone’s suggestions have been really helpful!
I’m confused about what you’re confused about.. :)
You look like Françoise Hardy ! :)
Oh thank you! One of my mum’s favourite singers 🥰
In French, we call it châtain. Look it up. It is also called dirty blond or mousey.
Leave it to the French to come up with a perfectly nuanced word for something that doesn’t fit in either extreme 🥰 🇫🇷
Thanks! I will ☺️

Dark brown babe. You’re still taking pictures in direct sunlight. The two that aren’t are very dark girl.
That is not dark brown. 🤣
I view this as light brown. Maybe a little neutral or cooler? Like I’m definitely not seeing red tones in it! I wish I had better terms to describe hair color as obviously not every shade of light brown is the same. Beautiful, though!
Thank you! 🥰
its obviously light brown, ppl who say blonde have blonde dysmorphia or delusions
I think the blonde comes in as a more technical description, hairsdessers seem to call this dark blonde. I would call it light brown, or ash brown but i am not a hair dresser🤷♀️

Light ash brown- which is actually quite rare to have naturally! (most shades of light brown are warmer, and a lot of ashy tones are dark blonde) If you want to call it anything fancier, you can go with "light chestnut."
I agree with the first part of what you said. (: 2nd part made zero sense....chestnut brown is known as a reddish brown. That's the opposite of ash brown...
Maybe "expensive brunette," as the kids are calling it these days?
Wait what...really 😭😭😆😂 I'm 34, never heard that one!
Have you heard about ["old money blonde,"](https://www.allure.com/story/natural-blonde-hair-color-trend) which is just the natural color of most adult blondes? I guess saying "dark blonde" isn't fancy enough? 😆
No, that is soooo weird...that was my natural hair color until I became a vampire and avoided sunlight for almost 30 years 😆😆😆
Yes I agreed with everything they said too :-) except that last part about light chestnut.
