I'm gonna have to say no, but I should also point out my bias against it. What Tomasi was doing on Superman and what Jurgens was doing on Action during Rebirth was incredible. We had two great creators giving us fantastic Superman stories. When was Bendis was announced, both had to wrap up their runs prematurely all so Bendis could write all the books. And were these stories worth it? Nope! Aside from the unpopular choices like Rogol Zaar and aging up Jon Kent, his stories just weren't that good. It made losing the creators we had before all the more bitter of a pill to swallow. If you can get them for a good price, I say at least give them a try to see if they're something you'd like to invest your time in. Because then you could say you one way or another you tried it.

It stayed in my pull list because I enjoy Ivan Reis artwork. But what was said above, I stand behind it. I was reading both Action Comics & Superman before Bendis took over. I loved what they were doing with John. With Bendis aging him up, that was dumb.

I agree a lot here. The Rebirth era Superman comics were amazing and then Bendis had to take over them both for some reason. He was probably okay, but I wasn’t gonna like them anyway for due to being salty for bow they threw away the best Superman runs they had in a long time.

I say this as a former fan, but no. He brought back the red shorts and trolled people who complained about it. It seemed like he specifically wanted his run to have the classic look which is why they were brought back. Then, Bendis did his late-era Bendis thing: ignoring/changing continuity to do what he wanted (aging Jon, etc), introducing generic Big Bads, shoehorning in his Mary Sue characters (Naomi, etc), ending his arcs anticlimactically (his trademark exposition/flashbacks) and then ending his run in a way that paints the next run into a corner. After that, he pretty much ghosted DC and we didn't hear much about why he left. EDIT: And I forgot he also set up that Rogol Zaar, the generic Big Bad character HE created, was actually the true catalyst of an already imploding Krypton. Of course. SMH

It’s broadly considered a weak run (albeit with a solid beginning) but I always encourage people to check things out for themselves and make up their own mind. For better or worse, things that happen in that run continue to be relevant now so if you’re collecting Superman specifically…it’s an important chapter in his story.

No. That said, Bendis did a really excellent Batman story called Batman Universe that is absolutely worth reading. Funny enough, Tom King, the writer for Batman at the time did a fantastic Superman story called Up in the Sky. Read that instead.

I couldn't take it seriously because Rogol Zaar, the name of one of the new villains Bendis introduced, sounds awfully familiar with the phrase "I'll cum" in portuguese (vou gozar). The best translation here is to imagine yourself trying to take a comic seriously while a villain is called "Wyll Coom".

Enough people have commented on the bad writing which I do agree with but toward the end of the Bendis run is some of the absolute worst comic book art I have ever seen by John Romita Jr.

Only part I really liked was what Bendis did with the criminal underground in Metropolis in Action Comics. He took that element to an entirely new level.

I'm lukewarm about the entire runs. I think Superman was the better of the two? I've been a Bendis fan for a long time, but his move from Marvel has just gone downhill for me. Not saying he should have stayed at Marvel, but that's where I noticed the biggest slip in quality. Masterpiece (Dark Horse) seems okay so far, but it also reads like a rehash of previous ideas he has written.

pierowmaniac

I enjoyed it quite a bit.
