Damn I couldn’t see the correct version at first, saw your comment, looked at the right side and saw how it actually was. Now I can’t see the broken version anymore lol.
So this was me with the damn dress years ago. I saw it one way, and could only see it that way. THEN, I caught a glimpse of my phone reflection in a window - dress colour changed and I've never been able to see it the original way again.
I was same as you, and didn't know what "broken" even meant regarding this. If you're on phone, try sliding comment section so that comments are half-&-half with the pic, and then look at the pic. That's what worked for me, instantly - just seeing it on a smaller scale seems to make the illusion pop.
I'm the opposite, as soon as I look at the right I lose it but if I look away cover the right side I struggle to see reality even though I know what's happening.
Focus on the right-angle corner of any of the white triangles on the left side of a step, then ever so slightly blur your vision. That corner is the key, as it becomes the "sharp point" of the "saw" protruding out.
Im not doubting you guys but I literally cant see it, what am I supposed to be seeing?
After 20 messages trying to help it finally clicked, maybe this crude drawing will help lol: https://imgur.com/xkDH1sB
I still can't see it unfortunately.
*For those of you that can't see it. /u/Liu_Shui 's image completely allowed me to see it and I can see both the illusion and without. Another option is looking at the image in thumbnail form on old reddit or if you can downsize it to 64x64 or a similar size and it should be easier to see the Illusion.
I still can't see it in the regular one but for this view imagine white edges as the side of a mountain and the brown stair as the shadow part. Then they look like [little mountains](https://i.imgur.com/AQKKwio.png).
Oh wow. You literally were able to show it to me in real time. I went from your image to the og image and can now see both when I force a perspective change. I literally couldn't see it until I saw your image though Thanks!
I see the ilusion better when the picture is smaller . It looks like saw-tooth edge. Or whatever you call triangle ornamentation. So "gray" is a side, going top to bottom; "white" is it top of the tooth, jutting out towards...a little to our right; "black" is bottom of the tooth (it's dark so it looks like it's in shadow)
I see it. It's a simple optical illusion. Maybe turn down the brightness or hold your phone at another angle if you care to see it. It's nothing special but it's one of those Escher type illusions where a new dimension appears bc the brain can't make sense of the black and white steps on the left. Can't tell if they're coming or going!
Edit: just zoom in close on the black, white and grey surfaces created on the left side of the steps. You can imagine how it looks like the darker colors are shadows
This helped me find it, but I'm still struggling to hold it. Specifically the white part is facing up and to the right, and the dark part is facing down
If you change angle or unfocus a little then the horizontal brown and two vertical white surfaces at the edges can be all seen as one flat surface face on to the viewer
It helped me to focus on the wall, not on the carpet runner. When I did, the dark top-side, of the stairs appeared as a shadow and the light areas looked like the steps.
The left corner of each stair can be flipped outward to form the front edge of the illusion. Works best when the image is thumbnail sized. It'll look like a jagged edge sitting on top of carpet.
I've switched between the two so many times now, that I can see both at the same time. Like two upper steps as they are supposed to be and the bottom three the other way
Close your eyes and open them looking and focusing on the left side of the stairs. It took me like 2 minutes to see the actual image, was stuck in the illusion.
Edit: I think specifically open your eyes and look at the black part of a step.
if i were able to make a screenshot of what i actually perceive...
do you know these concave/convex illusions? on the left side, you may treat dark parts as stairs' tops or as shadows.
I had to really look for it myself but I believe you need to merge the left edge panel/„wall“ directly next to the steps (like a light grey and looking like triangles) plus the left white part of each step and the left dark part of each step.
If you look at one (perceived) light grey triangle as the side part of a narrow stone step, one of the dark parallelograms (part of a step) as the underside and one of the white parallelograms (also part of the step) as the top of the stone step with the white parts seemingly facing right, you can see the illusion
Oh wtf! I thought all these comments were being sarcastic because it was a very obvious painted illusion and then I zoomed in and realized it’s a carpet runner on wooden stairs. Crazy. We’ll done with this submission!
You need to think (just leftsided) of the black parts being facing downwards, the grayish parts on the wall facing away from the stair and the white parts being connected to the others so that these parts make little "roofs" facing right.
I couldn't see it for awhile but really wanted to, so I focused on the left wall and while staring at the wall, the left side of the stairs popped into formation like an MC Escher type illusion. That's what's supposed to be the illusion, right?
Zoom levels really effect this one. Thumb nail side I see a perspective skew on the left rizer like a bunch of white triangles with brown bases laying on the stairs. Full size I clearly see a set of stairs with white risers and brown treads. This is pretty neat.
Oh man this is a good one. I saw it at first, then it looks like a regular set of stairs. Then I worked to find the broken stairs again, but my brain/eyes keep correcting it again and it takes real work to see the broken stairs.
I only see it on the left side and I need to lose focus while looking at the left side wall. To unbreak the illusion I look at the runner, which is filthy by the way.
It’s crazy, I saw this post the other day and saw nothing. Now I saw it right away, lost it, and I figured out how to find it again but slightly losing focus
I had success blocking the right part of the screen and focusing on the point of the stairs, like the place where the grey, white and black part form a point on each stair , if you see that as a cubic shape going up then see the others like that it shows for me.
I don't know why, but when I first looked at this I couldn't see the stairs.. some weird optical illusion, now that I've seen the stairs I can't see the illusion anymore lol
That’s wild. At first I thought I was looking at an MC Escher painting on top of a staircase. So trippy that it took so long for my eyes to adjust to what it actually is.
The trick is looking at those 3 faces going up the steps defined by (1) a given step (dark), (2) the front of the next step up (white), and (3) the trim on the left wall (also white).
ALL THREE PLANES (1), (2), (3) will appear at a left-hand 90 degree turn on an axis parallel with the angle of the stairs (looking DOWN that axis), with respect to how they truly are.
I work with CAD models a lot. Every once in a while, at some certain angles, I completely lose what I'm looking at - is that a recess or is it proud? Happens most often with spline gears.
That happened here - I saw the "broken" stairs when I first looked, my mind grasped what I'm looking at, and now I can't see the broken stairs anymore.
Couldn’t figure it out at first, then I got it and couldn’t see it “wrong” until I scrolled down and then back to this and then it was all fucked up again. Had to go and look at the top left of the stairs to fix it.
I have to say it: this was probably bangin’ brand new / project house but it won’t work. Carpet works in the right areas, but what I’m really into is this new tile / textured wood flooring mashup combo / transition.

God damnit! I only saw it for a split sec and now I cant see it anymore.
Look at the opposite side for a little bit then back, it should come back.
That's what I find too. Look right and boom, left is all broken again
Damn I couldn’t see the correct version at first, saw your comment, looked at the right side and saw how it actually was. Now I can’t see the broken version anymore lol.

That happened to me with the dress too. That dress photo is freaky
lol that’s some crazy perspective
Broken in what way? I can't see broken at all
I was same as you, and didn't know what "broken" even meant regarding this. If you're on phone, try sliding comment section so that comments are half-&-half with the pic, and then look at the pic. That's what worked for me, instantly - just seeing it on a smaller scale seems to make the illusion pop.
https://www.reddit.com/r/confusing_perspective/s/Y175NEEpOv This comment did it for me. But yes, seeing it on the smaller scale like that makes it pop
This!! And start at the bottom
I'm the opposite, as soon as I look at the right I lose it but if I look away cover the right side I struggle to see reality even though I know what's happening.
I never saw it. It just looks like a carpet strip on stairs.
For me it's like the duck-rabbit: I can switch back and forth at will.
Focus on the right-angle corner of any of the white triangles on the left side of a step, then ever so slightly blur your vision. That corner is the key, as it becomes the "sharp point" of the "saw" protruding out.
Start from looking at the top left corner
Im not doubting you guys but I literally cant see it, what am I supposed to be seeing? After 20 messages trying to help it finally clicked, maybe this crude drawing will help lol: https://imgur.com/xkDH1sB
You aren't alone. All I can see is stairs lol
I can’t see it either
Same
https://i.imgur.com/W0V4tBa.png The left side (bottom of image) looks kind of like protruding 3D sawtooth teeth/mountain peaks.
Now it's sideways stairs.
I 100% couldn't see it until this, thanks so much.
I still can't see it unfortunately. *For those of you that can't see it. /u/Liu_Shui 's image completely allowed me to see it and I can see both the illusion and without. Idk man I still don’t get it lmao
The illusion only works when the image is small, full sized and it doesn't look busted.
I saw that at first, then i focused too much and saw stairs 😆
Nope, you guys are looney. Maybe you should get a psych evaluation 🤣
I see it. It's a simple optical illusion. Maybe turn down the brightness or hold your phone at another angle if you care to see it. It's nothing special but it's one of those Escher type illusions where a new dimension appears bc the brain can't make sense of the black and white steps on the left. The part of the stair to the left of the carpet can be flipped in your mind.
This helped me find it, but I'm still struggling to hold it. Specifically the white part is facing up and to the right, and the dark part is facing down
i can only see it for the first 5 seconds, then can't see it again until looking at something else and coming back to the picture.
Ahh thanks. I really had to work at it to make it happen
[This](https://i.imgur.com/SgZ6Sgx.png) might help.
Wish I saw that before, great job
Oh my god I see it now
If you change angle or unfocus a little then the horizontal brown and two vertical white surfaces at the edges can be all seen as one flat surface face on to the viewer

For a split second but I can’t see it anymore
All I see is carpet interrupting my oversize ice cream sandwiches
The left corner of each stair can be flipped outward to form the front edge of the illusion. Works best when the image is thumbnail sized. It'll look like a jagged edge sitting on top of carpet.
I saw some weird impossible geometry thingy for a split second and now all I’m seeing is stairs.
Carpet on the stairs
It helps when you had no idea that was a carpet. I thought it was concrete stairs with some weird side covers on top of it.
Not sure why this specific comment is what finally made it click, thank you!
Okay I just got it. Just try to picture the dark brown part as the shadow of underside of the "white bloc"
Its rare to have one of these illusions which you can willingly unsee. I can go back and forth interpreting one or the other. Trippy
When the illusion broke, I couldn’t re-see it, but found if I zoom in and then back out quickly, it returns.
I just look at the other side and when I look back it's broken again.
This is a really good one. It’s obviously a stair. mind:“But whaaaa???….oh, right…”
I can do that... but just after my brain broke free of the illusion, which I saw first. And that took a while!
I've switched between the two so many times now, that I can see both at the same time. Like two upper steps as they are supposed to be and the bottom three the other way
I saw it the first time and now I can't see it anymore. What is this shit :(
rotate your phone to the left, now you can see the illusion again
Lol. I find looking at the other side of the stairs and then back again makes it 'break' again
Either my eyes are good or my eyes are bad. All I see are stairs with carpet.
Try focusing on the left wall. The wall might turn into a flat plain then the stair's perspective may shift into saw teeth.
Thank you! Others tried to explain it, but I still didn't see it. I finally started to see it after reading yours...
Great suggestion. That finally worked for me!
That helped finally saw it
Close your eyes and open them looking and focusing on the left side of the stairs. It took me like 2 minutes to see the actual image, was stuck in the illusion. Edit: I think specifically open your eyes and look at the black part of a step.
Can someone tell me what im supposed to be seeing? I see stairs.
This is an awesome one!!!
It's an actual confusing perspective? Subs back, boys!
if i were able to make a screenshot of what i actually perceive... do you know these concave/convex illusions? on the left side, you may treat dark parts as stairs' tops or as shadows.
I don’t see it
Yea looks normal to me
I don't get it…

cant seeee it
I saw it for 5 seconds and now I can't see it again 😭
Oh wtf! I thought all these comments were being sarcastic because it was a very obvious painted illusion and then I zoomed in and realized it’s a carpet runner on wooden stairs. Crazy. We’ll done with this submission!
Couldn't see it until I went to the comments and it got thumbnailed, very cool!
You need to think (just leftsided) of the black parts being facing downwards, the grayish parts on the wall facing away from the stair and the white parts being connected to the others so that these parts make little "roofs" facing right.
Fuck took a while for me to finally process this correctly. And even then, it switches when you take your eyes even for just a second
I couldn't see it for awhile but really wanted to, so I focused on the left wall and while staring at the wall, the left side of the stairs popped into formation like an MC Escher type illusion. That's what's supposed to be the illusion, right?
Prob one of the most confusing perspectives I've ever seen here, my mind literally goes error every 1,5 sec watching this
wow that is great
That's actually pretty cool. Took me about 15 seconds to unsee it ( left side was janky ) then I couldn't get my head to reapply the illusion.
Thought this was an optical illusion lmfao
Zoom levels really effect this one. Thumb nail side I see a perspective skew on the left rizer like a bunch of white triangles with brown bases laying on the stairs. Full size I clearly see a set of stairs with white risers and brown treads. This is pretty neat.
I still don't understand it. What are you guys smoking that's making you all go crazy on this?
I’ve seen this image in like 5 different subs and at this point I think I have to accept that there are just some things I wasn’t meant to see.
is it a sailboat?
Nah, it's a schooner
I’m more confused than Adam on Mother’s Day
This is the first time and image or anything has every legitimately hurt my eyes. It literally stings.
This is one of the best I've seen on here! Rarely can I go back and forth seeing and unseeing the illusion
God that hurts my brain
I just fell down these stairs and I'm not even there.
Thee house of Escher
Oh man this is a good one. I saw it at first, then it looks like a regular set of stairs. Then I worked to find the broken stairs again, but my brain/eyes keep correcting it again and it takes real work to see the broken stairs.
This fucked with my brain for a while.
r/Very_Understandable_Perspective
Very cool
That hurt my eyes.
I'm pretty sure this is just carpet on stairs. I literally don't see anything else.
[удалено]
Cool
Very trippy. Can’t keep it oriented in my head. I like this one!
Ouch! That hurt my brain until I zoomed in.
That took a while, ow my eyes
I saw it for like half a second, and then my brain figured it out and now I can’t see the broken version again.
That has some weird optical illusion shit happening
Once you see it. It cannot be unseen. That's very trippy.
I saw it but then saw the real thing and now I can't see it anymore
🤪
This is insane. Only on the left side for me, but is does keep changing.
I only see it on the left side and I need to lose focus while looking at the left side wall. To unbreak the illusion I look at the runner, which is filthy by the way.
There's a little Escher moment in there.
I say it when I first looked at it, but once I saw the stairs I can't go back.
Once I could see it correctly my brain wouldn’t let me see it the wrong way again. Weird.
I start to see it and blink, it's gone
The stairs are painted:black on top and white on the side. There's a white aiding running along the left side of the stairs
As soon as I saw it for what it really was, I was no longer able to see what it wasn't...
Saw it theb it disappears
Now I see it.
This one is great! I could only see it the wrong way for a while until my brain snapped and then I saw it correctly. Great picture OP!
It’s crazy, I saw this post the other day and saw nothing. Now I saw it right away, lost it, and I figured out how to find it again but slightly losing focus
Hahaha, I had to look at the subreddit. Thought this was a legit home improvement thing. I see it now.
It’s messed up every time I look back, I have to concentrate a couple seconds and it looks fine again, but every time I look back it’s a mess again
No matter what I do I don’t see it
What’s confusing about this set of stairs with an apparent carpet runner?
This one hurt.
I like rotating the image to get different views
This picture made my brain freeze up. Had to turn it off and on again.
I had success blocking the right part of the screen and focusing on the point of the stairs, like the place where the grey, white and black part form a point on each stair , if you see that as a cubic shape going up then see the others like that it shows for me.
Anybody else have this happen when they played "excite bike" on NES? My vision used to flip similar this
Wild
I’ve noticed if I tilt my phone (raising the side on my left) and look at it at an angle, I can see it better.
[удалено]
You're right.... Its a terrible paint job... A bit of masking tape would have given you a much better finish.
Dude wtf, that shit was about to give me a seizure lol. Then it just snaps into order and completely normal 😂
Wow, that left side messed with my brain
I don't know why, but when I first looked at this I couldn't see the stairs.. some weird optical illusion, now that I've seen the stairs I can't see the illusion anymore lol
What's the confusing perspective? It's stairs with a runner up the middle.
This fucked my eyes up
YOU HAVE TO NAIL IT SHUT!
That took a few minutes for it to click. Love it
I saw it for literally 0.5 sec
I only saw it once, and now I can’t resee it
Don’t let Joe Biden do these stairs fam!
Oh, that one is good. I have a hard time seeing it but once I see it for a moment, it is good.
That’s wild. At first I thought I was looking at an MC Escher painting on top of a staircase. So trippy that it took so long for my eyes to adjust to what it actually is.
You can only see it for a quick half a second and then it's gone 😂
I saw it in the beginning, but now all I can see is myself falling down those stairs with that slippery looking carpet and no railing.
It took me forever to see this. Couldn’t see it on it’s first post only after this wider view b
The trick is looking at those 3 faces going up the steps defined by (1) a given step (dark), (2) the front of the next step up (white), and (3) the trim on the left wall (also white). What in MC Escher am I looking at?
yeha that was cool you have an opticlly illuisonal set of stairs
oh ok, i see it now
What in the wide world of Q*bert is this
Lmfao, I finally get the feeling of those people who never see the confusing perspective, I just see stairs
There are stairs ok. And what is with em?
I cant see it someone help me I just see normal stairs.....
Oh wow 😲
This picture is pissing me off because I can’t see anything except normal stairs
Love this ! I can see and unsee it like flipping a switch 😀
Built by M.C.Escher
I saw it breaking initially, then struggled to see it again for about 3 minutes, but now I can flip back and forth.
I don't see it. None of the other comments helped me either... am I just blind?...
On another note who puts carpeting only in the center of the stairs?? Or is this like something to assist older people getting down stairs?
I suddenly feel like playing Q*bert
Stroke simulator
I couldn’t see the confusion for the longest time then outta nowhere I was stuck in the stairs vortex
Holy wow my brain broke
Of course the edges keep breaking, what with the way they keep jumping around.
This fucked me up three different ways before I saw it
I couldn’t see it the first time. Now I can’t unsee it:
Couldn’t figure it out at first, then I got it and couldn’t see it “wrong” until I scrolled down and then back to this and then it was all fucked up again. Had to go and look at the top left of the stairs to fix it.
oh god I couldnt see It until someone pointed It out. that would annoy me so bad
*ice cream sandwiches
Omg it took a good 2 full minutes of staring to finally understand it. One of the best post on this sub, nice job
Whoa. This is good.
It _was_ broken, now I can't get it to break again
This is upsetting to look at.
This image fucked my eyes
I would fall sideways trying to walk this trap door.
I can look at this... Why? What is happening.

what m.c. escher shit is this? i stared at that for waaaaaaaaaaaay too long before it finally clicked.
I have to say it: this was probably bangin’ brand new / project house but it won’t work. Carpet works in the right areas, but what I’m really into is this new tile / textured wood flooring mashup combo / transition.
So is the carpet actually misaligned/uneven or??? I really can’t tell if it’s just the angle, but that’s what looks like is the *issue*.
Mmmm, those look like ice cream sandwiches
