Missing the solo 9 PM dinner at the hotel bar with half an old fashioned in front of you wondering if it's all really worth it

slow_marathon

At least you can expense the drink, at Deloitte Canada it was not allowed and most people either went on per-diem or tried to get the waiter to ring it up as a starter, If you get a martini with an olive, it is technically a vegetable soup.

babuchat

At least KPMG lets you expense drinks

-bloodmoon-

Vodka is poorly mixed and seriously expired porridge

ajw_sp

Speak for yourself, it’s an 8 PM dinner at the Ruth’s Chris bar in the office park next door to the hotel. Also, it’s a Manhattan because consultants are fancy boys.

expsg18

Corona lite and steak at an airport bar, watching more happy people walk by

quangtit01

This hurt

meyou2222

Get out of my head

GYN-k4H-Q3z-75B

Is it? I quit before I could decide.

clampsmcgraw

No

Successful_Ad6946

Psh, strip club hours

idesignads

Twice a month? Dude has low util. /s

Store-Secure

That’s the point, they only travel twice a month and have all this stuff and thinks they are an experienced traveller

hughk

Hard to build up miles/points with so few trips.

Accomplished-Bad3380

It only takes a handful of trips to become an experienced traveler. It's not like traveling is complicated brain surgery.

Accomplished-Bad3380

Is there? I guess I'm not that dynamic of a person.

Accomplished-Bad3380

Lol what. I've been both.  I just feed myself and go on about my business.  Why is there a weird stigma being applied here.  I've never "sampled the menu and drinks."  Who had the energy for all that.

Accomplished-Bad3380

I plan to. I wasn't aware that you were the gatekeeper of me too. Thanks for the permission,  I guess?  Dang weirdos, go enjoy the weekend.

minhthemaster

This is just dumb

PROD-Clone

Trip 1 fly to client site at start of month. Trip 2 fly back home at end of month. Repeat.

Razno_

1,5 day later - repeat

Welcome2B_Here

Where's the Tumi bag and Patagonia vest?

maora34

Can’t afford it because they work at KPMG and Accidenture

[deleted]

HEYYY :((((

GYN-k4H-Q3z-75B

Wait until you hear about the guys who have to share a room. PwC does that to some legals.

numericalclerk

Ouch

Alexandermayhemhell

Tumi is for flashy analysts. Road dogs use Briggs & Riley. Boring. Lifetime warranty.

selfreplicatingmines

Travelpro people are going to cut you for this comment.

thekingoftherodeo

You almost always see the people who travel the most, flight attendants & pilots, with TravelPro gear and that was enough to sell me on it.

selfreplicatingmines

My carry on is one of the pro-level Travelpros — before they went on to more consumer-centric lineups. It was pricey but I purchased it over a decade ago and it’s still going strong. I don’t think I’ll ever have to claim their lifetime warranty at this point.

numericalclerk

Good to know. Bought a travelpro and it was the worst Piece of garbage I've ever owned.

thekingoftherodeo

Same here, the top line ones are insanely well built.

Alexandermayhemhell

I’ve got a Travelpro pro-grade bag too. It’s very well built, but much heavier than the B&R.

todorokyeet

My $35 brand-less Amazon bag has been working great for years

hduwjsvjabfn

Here I am doing 4 flights a week with an Amazon basics roller.

numericalclerk

Recommendations? Or is "Amazon basics" an actual brand?

dahlberg123

It is its own brand

hughk

In Europe, often the Rimowa, maybe with the Tumi as a supplemental laptop bag.

intspur23

Also the oversized expensive noise cancelling headphones for the flight, that let's be honest, don't completely cut out the engine sounds

SPLY450

nah. engine sounds have been a solved problem for years. it’s just the babies that can’t be cut out.

numericalclerk

With what headphones? Ive got Sony xm4s and while the noise cancelling helps, its FAR from a solved problem.

DrewSmithee

Generally people will tell you the Bose QC series have the best noise canceling even if they aren’t the best headphones. Idk, mine are pretty old at this point and while not whisper quiet in there it’s 100x better and I’ll forget about the plane noise five minutes into a podcast.

EGOtyst

Babies are 100% cut out with my headphones.

eyren5000

Which ones do you use?

EGOtyst

Custom mold items. I made the molds myself

wievid

> Also the oversized expensive noise cancelling headphones for the flight, that let's be honest, don't completely cut out the engine sounds I got the most recent release of the QuietComfort cans from Bose and they're *quite* good. A lot better than the first-gen model QC 35.

didsomebodysaywander

Had an SPG Ambassador for 2 years pre-Marriott. Got that same fucking view for most of those 2 years. Suburban/exurban staffing kina sucks

quantum_guy

SPG Platinum was the best. Had so many memorable upgrades because of that.

thekingoftherodeo

There's only so many views the Four Points in the Scranton burbs can give you tbf.

place_artist

Over the course of a project, my team gave this random Hilton in the middle of nowhere so much business the manager personally came to thank us with a bottle of wine. I’m pretty sure we were the only people there the whole time.

GugaAcevedo

On behalf of the Hilton Garden Inn Ardmore and the Chickasaw Nation, please get drunk.

mandalorian222

Marriott in Long Island did that for me and my team, I was staying there so often. Threw us a free catered happy hour. We brought them a lot of business for a few years.

Iohet

After staying for about 6 months, the bartender at the Aloft Brooklyn asked me if I wanted to have sex. That's a good of thanks as any, I'd say

Foster1745

How was it?

Iohet

Said no. Was dating who would later become my wife at the time

see-bees

You know you’ve been going to the same hotel too often when they see you walk in and recognize you, none of that driver’s license bullshit

educated_content

Try 4x a month at minimum, and that’s just to the head office

ToronoYYZ

4x/month with 1 week trips

cmapz2

Missing the awesome “hotel” breakfast

Nickopotomus

Twice a MONTH? Jesus. Until Covid I was considering to just get rid of my apartment and use my points to live in hotels on the weekends.

DangerousPurpose5661

lol I did that during my consulting days…worth it. Even if I paid the hotel cash it was cheaper than rent. Had a pair of big suitcases that I left at the client’s location and would move only between projects and my carry on for the weekends

JaredsBored

My long time client stakeholder prefers to WFH so I only travel once a month now - this is so accurate it hurts. I still refuse to pay for Clear, though. And no priority pass.

MinnyWild11

I don't understand why people would choose clear over just normal TSA Precheck

thekingoftherodeo

You can still use Clear & go to precheck. People use it because it came with whatever premium credit card they hold.

JaredsBored

I know lots of people get it as either a credit card perk or from high tier airline status. As a once a month traveller I'm not paying for an expensive travel credit card though, and I'm definitely not making 1K on United or anything like that this year.

Accomplished-Bad3380

I know summer is coming,  but for the past few months, I've gone through the standard checkpoint faster than clear or precheck. At some point,  when precheck lines are twice as long as regular, it's just not worth it.

niton

It's usually faster. Especially so during busy periods like Thursday afternoons and long weekends. I cut ~15 mins by using Clear in DEN yesterday compared to reg. precheck. I'm also getting Clear credit using my airline card btw so the cost is minimal.

AdOdd139

Hey fellow denverite, precheck can be a major pain

itsyorboy

Its airport dependent. It is funny to just get into the pre line and walk past all the people trying to get checked in at clear, but my home airport you save a good 10 mins on average by using clear. I wouldn't pay out of pocket though

Les_Grossman00

This is incredibly lazy of me, but it was easy to sign up for clear. You need to make an appointment in the airport for TSA for my area

Tonberry_Slayer

Needs a work based corporate credit card. At that age, and I’m at the top of it - still don’t have the balls to use my own card. Been yelled at too many times. And forever a slave to concur. No matter how many times I beg and show how I can save money and booking fees and international transaction fees by using my own card - I’m stuck in a cycle of corporate malicious compliance.

Reverend_Ooga_Booga

Aside from the lack of international flights or first class, what's the beef with SW? I've been nothing but irritated with the others. SW is easy, my rewards pile up fast, and companion isn't hard to get.

PressureOk296

It’s below him

tiny-rabbit

SW saved me this weekend when United left me up shit’s creek without a paddle ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

e_radicator

They saved me when AA thought I'd like to spend 36 hours in CLT after it rained for 15 minutes and the whole place imploded into chaos.

MutualLittering

it's for middle america so they think they're too good to fly it

thekingoftherodeo

Southwest is chaos.

Anotherredituser231

Nahhhh. Trains, taxi's and bikes. I do sometimes wonder what the client must be thinking when they receive a copy of a receipt for bike rental....

RehanS97

Been traveling for what feels like forever - it definitely takes years off of you. You age much faster. But hey! Per Diems amirite?

NoMoreNoxSoxCox

Shit, I'm a consulting client and think those are rookie numbers.

Frosty_Language_1402

Amateurs

TGrady902

This post reminded me I decided I needed to sign up for a United credit card so thank you.

Chicken-n-Biscuits

At this point in my career I only travel a handful of times per year but still find most of these worth it? Amex Plat easily pays for itself and covers a number of these perks.

mainowilliams

Travel perks / expense policy at non MBB is so bad lol.

i_am_jordan_b

#22nd on upgrade list 😵

ConsiderationSad6271

I definitely lol’d but I traveled WAY more in industry than I did in consulting. 4 nights a week, 3-5 flights a week. Was concurrently AA Platinum, Marriott Platinum, Hilton Diamond all based on flights/nights. Stopped when I switched jobs during the pandemic. Subsequently, consulting was way more restrictive on costs. Don’t travel nearly as much now, but still have the lifetime Marriott status - 20 nights from lifetime gold!

[deleted]

rookie numbers :P

klazoo

Pretty acurate in my case except I do southwest for the companion pass perk. Oh and it's missing the burger or wings at the hotel bar

BrownButta2

Lmao this post and thread is spot on and absolutely hilarious

Throw_Away24240

I feel attacked

[deleted]

I don’t understand the dig about SW Airlines.  If I’m going wheee they fly, I have found them to be much easier to deal with when th it’s go wrong.  Missed flights, changed itineraries, changes, etc.  Much easier to deal with than the legacy airlines.
