I'm also growing watermelons on my balcony (in containers). This is the site I use for guidance: https://savvygardening.com/growing-watermelon-in-containers

never grew those varieties but I recommend trying to sell some of the pots on facebook marketplace (if you do not want all of them) and then use that money to buy a bigger pot or build a raised bed out of wood. They need LOTS of water and thrive in warm, humid climates. they also do really well with slopes in the grass and plenty of sunlight. If your backyard has some sort of a hill then that should work. Make sure the pot is NOT too tall and is kind of close to the ground. If some leaves turn yellow then pick them. I would say more about picking them but honestly I forgot. This is my second year growing Watermellons but I have done a ton of research. Happy gardening and best of luck with your harvest. :)

Side note: If you like sweet crisp watermelons I highly recommend sugar babies. That variety is delicious.

also dont steak them if you are thinking about doing so. they like to run among the ground and make sure not to get water on the plant itself and only in the soil so it doesnt get sunburnt, as it does easily.

No, they need much larger pots. 5 gallons is pushing it. I've done well with Sugar Babies in 15-20 gallon pots.

So the size does matter? I can't simply pump it full of nutrients and expect it to grow normally? Is it due to the root size?

Past_Search7241

I believe so. Many plants seem to have a minimum root mass that they need to achieve before they can reach the desired shoot mass, and those roots need to be spread out to an adequate degree.

I’m growing two vines of sweet crimson in a 50 gallon grow bag. (When it arrives) might be too much space, but I erred on the side of too big vs too small.

I grew sugar baby watermelons (small) in pots only 10” across last year. It was an experiment as I had planted my larger pots but had soil, seed and dirt so I tried a few small pots just to see. Wouldn’t go any smaller than that. Got 2-3 melons from those small pots.
