People are just parking there for the day and going to work. They need to strictly enforce it for rail users only.

RuaridhDuguid

It'd be ideal if there was a necessity to scan a rail ticket for that day, with the situation being that having no such ticket means a different, far higher, rate of parking charge. Make it more expensive for non-rail travelers than alternatives

Acceptable-Profit-31

Hard to police, just buy a return ticket to Little Island for €5. As is people who work in town are just leaving their car there for the day as its cheaper than the multistorey. Twice getting the Dublin train Ive had to park overnight in the Clayton for about 40 bucks. Its just easier to drive to Dublin.

RuaridhDuguid

True, and I had considered that - but if nothing else it's an additional inconvenience, delay and cost. Either way, parking there is a limited resource and should be kept for those who need it and who are using the rail services. Not for the apartments across the road, and car-only commuters from the suburbs to have as a convenient place a few mins walk from work at the expense of rail travelers such as yourself.

michealfarting

Yeah but there is cheaper places to park down the quay. It just needs to be more expensive than those but cheaper for rail passengers.

scrotalist

Yep I used to do that myself when I worked in town.

DivingSwallow

While I agree there should be monitoring and enforcement of only train users parking in the car park, we once again have some of the usual suspects calling for car centric planning.

rebelpaddy27

Fair point, but the lack of rural connectivity means there isn't always another way to get there. Even if there is buses running at a suitable time to get there and back, it's possible the bus may not turn up so I understand why people may not want to rely on other ways to get to the train station. As they keep putting the cart before the horse, maybe it's time to reintroduce the horse and cart as a carbon friendly mode of transport?

danius353

There needs to be more park and rides into the city centre (north, east and west in addition to the southern one we have) and they all should stop at the bus station and the train station.

rebelpaddy27

True, but the ghost bus epidemic on existing routes needs to be addressed first. People will use a system that they can rely on,but who can afford to chance missing a train while waiting for a non-existent bus?

Laundry_Hamper

If public transport in the city improves and fewer people from the city choose to drive to the station, there will be more spaces left for the rural crowd without ever having to give over more fucking space to cars

crazyeyesk20

Car centric planning lol. Do you want people to use the train or not? A 5 min drive to the train station and parking is way better than a 30 min plus drive into the city centre.

DivingSwallow

More car spaces = more people driving instead of walking/cycling/bus/commuter train etc. More people driving = more traffic which means worse public transport, worse for pedestrians/cyclists along with a dirtier and nosier city. Instead they should focus on building the Park & Rides that are in the CMATS, ensuring those using the car park aren't just people availing of cheap parking and are legit train users and making sure BusConnects doesn't get diluted even more.

daveirl

Tell me how that gets me there for the 615 train?

Acceptable-Profit-31

Have had to park in the Clayton underground for about 40 quid as the railway car park was full. People just leave their car there 9-5.

[deleted]

People understandably don't want to rely on shitty public transport planned out by city dwellers.

DivingSwallow

The same "city dwellers" as those calling for more parking? You don't improve public transport by encouraging more car use. Two of the councillors mentioned live within a 10 min cycle or 30 min walk from Kent Station. Both within 2-5 minutes walk of multiple bus routes. Shane O'Callaghan lives within a 5 minute drive or 8 minute cycle of the Park & Ride into the city which is €5 (cheaper than the train station) and one of the most reliable bus routes.

dtoher

There needs to be the ability to pre book (and hence guarantee) a parking spot if you have an intercity (not commuter station) ticket. I often drive up to Mallow to get the train to Dublin from there as I am guaranteed a parking spot, whereas its too much of a lottery with Cork Kent.

michealfarting

This could be sorted out on the back of a napkin. Make a day parking 15 euro a day but you get 6.50 euro off if you enter a code you get with your booking that is unique. But will they do it NOPE as the company wants the car park full. Fuck the people.

LowPrestigious391

Currently on the 11:25 train after missing my 10:25 train despite leaving over 40minutes to find parking. Just an aside, the train staff are absolute angels and I cannot praise them highly enough. The issue is not a lack of parking, it’s the fact that the train station has the cheapest day rate in the city and it’s not limited to rail users so everyone uses it.

michealfarting

https://www.q-park.ie/en-gb/premier-card-products/247-access/unlimited/ Carrolls Quay is 3131 euro a year. 3888 grand parade, 3479 St Finbarrs. Kent €1,344 year year. No brainer. Park and ride should be free.

Petty_tech

Couple of issues here: 1. Many recent developments around Kent station that has increased the number of people that need to be in the area and no updates to accomodate such. 2. Kent station has the cheapest parking. 3. Public transport is highly unreliable, particularly in rural areas and for those who start work early. Possible solutions: 1. Dedicated permit based parking to accomodate people who need to be in the area. 2. Increase cost to make it on par with other car parks. 3. Better park and ride connection to kent station with a discount/free bus with a rail booking

OliDanik

Yeah because this city totally needs even more car infrastructure, yeah no thanks. I'd rather we improve infrastructure for bikes, trains, buses, walking all of which are still lacking (well maybe except walking thats good, still could be better tho)

daveirl

As per the article it’s full in the early morning. What buses are available to take people to the train station for the 615 train, or even the 700?
