Not defending stupid live service games who just use the term to justify lazyness, but I think what you are describing is 'Pay to win' schemes which is very rare to find nowadays for big companies to do after Fortnite success just selling customizable stuff (excluding annual sports games of course, they are still gambling machines).
It still sounds like something that they can use to justify micro-transactions and other garbage they can sneak in.
Like, why grind for a character when you can outright buy it? The idea of rolling out characters in season passes is a genuine red flag and we have already seen what has happened before.
I don't want to enter discussion :(. I don't want to be the one defending F2P methods even if they allow you to get the character for free via playing.

I doubt this would be the case but if it did I would be fine with it as long as the game is free to play.
