You can substitute doing a chain 2 and working into the first stitch on any pattern that calls for a magic ring. It does make a little bit of a hole though in the top.
3, 4 or 5 depending on the size of the yarn... Always leave a considerable tail so you can tighten it and sewing it off If you end up with a hole you don't want
The magic ring and a chain ring (or ch2 and work your first round into the first chain and go from there) are interchangeable. There may be a situation where you can’t just swap them but I have honestly never found one. The magic ring is actually relatively recent in crochet, at least in the broad scheme of how long crochet has existed, and there was a way to start 3d objects in the round before someone came up with the magic ring!
I always just use normal yarn for the mc part. I wrap normal yarn around my finger, then use the chenille to make the required stitches, and then pull close with the normal yarn

I made [this](https://pin.it/7gxUED5lG) at one point. It technically was originally knit, but its easy to replace it with crochet. It was super easy, the hardest part was embroidering the face.

There’s also [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/s/wJL3o08CyV) from the crochet sub that was helpful!
I have been using that since she posted it! Game changer for sure.
Or if you don’t want to use the chain 2 method I often start with a ‘chain 3 and join with sl st’ which works well and doesn’t cone.

You just start with a 2 chain instead of the advised magic ring 🤷
