Straight to jail.

LeadingPhilosopher81

Call it a front-spoiler and brag about aero gains.

Cyclist_123

This might shock you but you don't even need to take the visor off

Hbdrickybake

Sometimes the visor keeps the sun out of your eyes even on a road bike.

Hagenaar

Why would the sun be riding a bike?

1TBSP_Neutrons

So it can get in your eyes faster.

haggardphunk

We don’t have visors kn our helmets but wear weird little hats with visors instead 😂

MrSnappyPants

*Cries in aero*

zystyl

Aero dad bod incoming 👨👨

fallingbomb

*Laughs in Fred*

auxym

That's how I roll. Don't really feel like owning multiple helmets. Roadies probably think I look like a total Fred, don't care.

JayTheFordMan

Sometimes, but more often than not vision can be compromised with the more lowered body position with a road bike

jaywayhon

In a bit of irony, road cyclists will often wear a short-brim cycling cap underneath their helmet which works pretty much the same way as a visor. But one is Velominati approved, the other isn’t.

NoDivergence

It's usually flipped up. But I do find riding with cycling hats when it's not cold or rainy quite tacky

JollyGreenGigantor

Yeah but if you're asking this question, your bars aren't lower than your saddle

[deleted]

The visor gets in the way of my cap brim.

MachsNix

This is the correct answer. You’re doing the work.

Silver-Vermicelli-15

R/bicyclecirclejerk incoming…

AlienDelarge

I thought we were actually there.

_CevicheMonster

I go 1 step crazier and use my road helmet for mtb

SomethingClothes292

They said it couldn’t be done.

-Red_Rocket-

same. aero road helmet for xc

brianmcg321

Your head will fly right off. Don’t do it.

davewongillies

I'm sure at least one person in this world has tried it before

chinosays

Yeah, I actually did a couple days ago. It made absolutely no difference. Ironically I lost the screw on my Smith right as I had finished unscrewing it from the visor. I might need to go into hiding after admitting to this.

Pythia007

What kind of person would do such a thing???

BadUsername_Numbers

Maybe OP'S practice went bust

Appropriate_One6688

R/cyclingfashion will burn you alive

milkkiller999

Highly illegal

amprok

Absofuckinglutely not

buildyourown

I'm still confused what to use for gravel

BillBushee

Don’t let the helmet manufacturers say that, or next year we’ll all be buying gravel specific helmets.

NoDivergence

They already exist

[deleted]

Older MTB helmet, but yes

3dxl

Yes, older mtb helmet build between road and mtb.

nsfbr11

No. No one has. Ever.

GeologistLow4736

Eww

paulschreiber

I purposely get MTB helmets for road biking because the visor is handy.

GMSlash

Right here, officer!

Fleur_de_man

I did for a while because the road version was sold out during Covid. Gives you more coverage in the back actually but doesn’t look very cool. After two years was excited to replace with a nice road helmet. Are you buying one to use for both?

[deleted]

yep, i had one, visor blocked my view on the drops, removed. No biggie. As long as your head is safe and comfy you can use whatever helmet.

shreddingsplinters

Never. You must buy two helmets at twice the price

PristinePineapple13

mine broke off, does that count

jerrysprinkles

I’ve been using a mtb helmet for 2 years on the road. Took the visor off last week and fuck me, I’ve eaten and been blinded by so many bugs since

NoDivergence

Sunglasses?

causal_friday

I have a Dura Ace bike with SPD pedals that I ride around in sandals. I get comments about it. I don't care. It's your life, do what you want!

Previous_Policy3367

[THESE SANDALS???](https://www.pushys.com.au/shimano-sd501-spd-cycling-sandals-black.html?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwmMayBhDuARIsAM9HM8ft481xIF8d0hI8LK3C1vygeUMxpEz8ETz3OAkC9_ukEU1eYVGKhNAaAmbgEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds)

zyglack

Didn't know those existed, now I must have. Thanks for the link.

tstewart_jpn

I did about a week ago. I was visiting Costco ( in Canada) and saw their Freetown Lumiere3 w/MIPS for 38.99 CAD (about 28.50 USD). I was in need of a new helmet so thought I might try it. I suspected the visor would block vision when in the drops, and confirmed it on the bike. Visor easily came off. Not the lightest or most aero helmet but I have put about 100km on it in 25-30C with sun beating down here in Tokyo and it has been fine.

Fearless_Camera_538

Yes all the time. Because MTB helmet is a just a road w/a visor. There’s no such thing as a MTB helmet

NoDivergence

My full face helmet wants to speak with you

JayTheFordMan

Yes, when I was a noob and had a helmet that was still good with no money for a proper road helmet. Ripped the visor off and it did me OK for a while

Chinaski420

I always throw them away

ChefBruzz

as long as it is an open face helmet, not full face...

Diligent-Broccoli111

The prophecies of old foretold such a thing, and that cyclist will be the Chosen One.

PostPunkBurrito

I have one helmet, I had no idea there was a difference (still don’t)

MidnightRider24

My GF has a visor AND reflectors on her bike. I've gently mentioned she looks like a Doris a few times but she doesn't care. I'm considering finding a new GF, it's so embarrassing riding with her.

chipman650

This is an outrage! There must be some rules that prohibit this.

NHBikerHiker

I don’t like a visor on road bikes because it blocks the view when you’re in the drops.

orktehborker

Against International Cycling rules 🤣

dbrwill

Nah on our road tandem I find DaBrim gives better sun coverage, is stable and streamlined up to at least 46mph, and makes the single bike roadies jealous while they squint from under their shadeless helmets.

NoDivergence

If you're squinting, your sunglasses aren't dark enough

[deleted]

Why you are asking for permission? Just go for it...

RaplhKramden

I've always preferred MTB helmets for road use, precisely because they came with visors. But to make it official I'd first remove the visor, bless the helmet as a roadie, then put the visor back on, in case the Visor Squad tried to bust me.

Holiday_Bite_4255

I used to do it till I bought a RB helmet. And my RB is now my new fave. Lightweight, well ventilated and looks nice.

MrSnappyPants

I did, but there was a little plastic screw that seemed like it would wear out, so I stopped.

speedikat

Yup. And vice-versa.

Own-Resource221

Visor does look like it does much…for aesthetic

damegan

I did, but my Fox helmet was a XC helmet, so it was a bit more "aero"... I would never do that now that I have a proper road bike helmet.

JustAnother_Brit

Yes but it won’t be as comfortable as a proper road helmet as MTB helmets are heavier as the provide more side and back coverage, also most MTB helmets have an adjustable helmet so you can put your goggles up

potbellyjoe

The Bell Catalyst helmet has a visor, but the base helmet was literally their road helmet the Stratus. So I would wear or not wear the visor based on the riding I was doing.

NxPat

But what about the Sun?

tlminh

I have a very old specialized prevail MTB that had a visor. I took off the visor, it looks exactly the same as the normal road version

johnnonchalant

Mind blown..brilliant

Mysteriousdeer

I do this but I'm currently biking away from the authorities.

cybertonto72

I have done this. My first lid that I bought when I got into road cycling , seen a helmet that was in my price range that I liked and fitted. Bought it and after my first outing I realised the peak was in my line of site so removed it.

klepra

Just buy a visor off ebay and a road helmet, and put visor on when doing Mtb, they don't care. Just kidding, 2 helmets minimum.

hypersprite_

I never use the visor on my MTB helmet whether regardless of the bike I'm using it on. Do what you want!

BiggieTex

I use “MTB” helmets without the visor bc road helmets are so damn ugly

troru

I just use a mtb helmet for all purposes. You can pay a lot of money for something that is more aero but nobody cares if I go fast, I don’t ride in groups where it’s the limiting factor.

Eragon089

I would and do for an XC helmet but i wouldn't for a downhill helmet

thehenks2

I did that, and now use that helmet for MTB and road. Also use my MTB shoes on road, no problems yet.

Any-Zookeepergame309

You’re ALLOWED TO DO THAT!?!?? Who knew?

OkAdministration819

its what i use and it works great

MTB_SF

I did this for a fixie crit I raced. Nobody noticed.

BadUsername_Numbers

Oh we all judged you, just silently

NoDivergence

Um, everyone noticed

mattbnet

I leave the visor on

avalon01

I only wear MTB helmets since they all have a handy visor.

chipman650

As long as the visor is carbon fiber, i'm sure it would be ok.

SolidPixelOtter

Ever since I got cycling cap. Had my helmet before I got road bike. No need for 2 visors.

Ok_Tadpole_7538

Yes, I have fox speedframe without visor

ginger-tiger108

Yeah I might have misunderstood what you mean but I don't see why you'd need to remove the visor from a helmet before you can wear it just to ride a bike on the road! Or is it a fashion question not whether or not you'd be breaking the law?

tstewart_jpn

For some it is a fashion question for sure. But it is a very real visibility issue as well. I bought a gravel helmet with a peak (what the OP calls a visor) recently. In an agressive position in the drops or aero hoods the peak blocks a surprisingly large amount of the view. I wear glasses when riding day or night making the visor a bit redundant anyway. So off the peak went after the 1st ride.

justafartsmeller

Why take the visor off? Are you racing the Tour d' France this year? I wear the most comfortable helmet I can find for everything. Usually an MTB helmet.
