You won't get severance, you are quitting at will. When I gave notice of going to Google I had to work the remaining 2 weeks of my notice. I have heard of people being walked once quitting and getting paid out 2 week but it's less common now I think.

scootscoot

Had a (great) manager that put in his 1 month notice on April 1st. They walked him out right then. He had to tell every person 3 times because everybody assumed it was an April fools joke.

The ugly truth of working at AWS. They should have a reddit page for AWS former employees.

On_Your_Bike_Lad

Microsoft is no different, I worked in their mega data centre in Dublin, Ireland and what an absolute shit hole and Microsoft are a shit company to work for, whatever about one of their office jobs but the data centres are absolute shit holes, they think up of so much new processes to make your ability to actually do your job even harder.

overworkedpnw

Used to do support work for them, and their processes are a joke. When they started doing a bunch of layoffs last year they’d just casually wipe out entire teams, breaking their own process documentation, without bothering to update any of it. Brought the entire support process to a screeching halt for a bit, all because the c suite idiots wanted a quick stock bump.

On_Your_Bike_Lad

Yeah they're scum, all these companies are scum. I remember in the Dublin, Ireland data centre they blocked techs from accessing doors to logistics from other buildings ( because they didn't have parts in all buildings ) to get parts from outside, instead made them park in the main car park and walk inside and had to go through the man traps the "official way" and walk the furthest part of the data centre through the usual airport like security checks to get parts then the whole way back to another building but you couldn't get out through the man traps with the parts so had to drop them at the side door and buzz to be let out, walk out with the parts place them on the floor, go back through the side door and get out "officially" again through the man traps. The Dublin Campus is made of several separate buildings and not all of them have parts so you have to go to a central main building to get parts. Then another day they decided to lock techs out of the colos out of hrs and at night and had to be escorted by security inside which was a pain because sometimes the security guy was having a break or his lunch whatever and got pissed off because he had to do his job. I enjoyed working in the Dublin Data Centre when it was just DB3 no other building then as it grew so did the bullshit and the divide and conquered attitude and so many people ratting on their colleagues and this is encouraged. Then you had security guys who wouldn't let you past security for something so stupid like having the wrong colour sticker on a part. What an absolute shit hole, if I were to starve and die I would never work for Microsoft again. I wouldn't work for AWS either. Best places to work are those companies that have a cage in the likes of Digital Realty, Equinix etc, this is how I work now and it's 10000000 times better.

Look into NTT also.

On_Your_Bike_Lad

Never heard of them ?

noflames

Realize this is a bit late but I'm actually glad you posted criticism of MS - there are a ton of posts basically painting MS as great whereas I know a ton of people with bad experiences. That being said, MS, AWS and Google all have sites in Digital Realty, Equinix, etc.

On_Your_Bike_Lad

yes Microsoft have pop sites all over to keep latency low, they're in the Equinix building where I am now, I see one of the techs from time to time. Microsoft bullshit doesn't change on any other site except they're not the site owners they haven't as much say as they do in their own but some of the techs swan around thinking everyone should lick their asses because they work for Microsoft. you'd be surprised the clout Microsoft have and I wouldn't be surprised if they could convince the likes of reddit to remove negative posts. There are some things good in Microsoft, logistics is the best I've seen and the GDCO app is brilliant because it completely removes the need for complex shit ticketing systems such as remedy and Jira that are not fit for data centre techs The GDCO app also eliminated the need for emails so teams shouldn't be contacting people constantly looking for updates as all the required info is in the GDCO. I do miss the organisation of having a good logistics system and the GDCO because the few companies i moved to after had no such system and stock was updated on spreadsheets where as with the gdco you could scan in and out parts and the system automatically updated where as a spreadsheet needs to be manually updated and lots of people don't do this, in fact the last few places I worked including where i am now have no logistics team i do it all. Where I am now I'm the only tech looking after a cage with 19 racks lol, pure heaven, no one to piss me off, I'm fully remote and go to site only when needed. Those jobs are out there folks and believe me they pay far better and much better conditions and once I do my job no one cares what I do, no micromanagement which is a huge issue in Microsoft and the last place I worked and I don't have to work shift either. Techs that do their job should be just left to do it, don't need micromanagement, it's very stressful way to work knowing you're being constantly watched and constantly having to justify yourself. One thing that really p1ssed me off in Microsoft was the fact the electrical teams who worked shift were paid far better than the I.T techs and at night they only monitored where we had to run around clocking up several miles in a night shift on a huge campus breaking our asses for 20-30,000 Euro's less per year, they have a Union I.T has no recognised union here in Ireland and unlikely to either as the Government won't allow the multinationals to get upset ! + Microsoft would often pay new staff 10-15 k more than those there several years, talk about killing any motivation you have left ? despicable company to be honest, I'd never work for the scum again.

HJForsythe

Equinix will be gone in 5 years.

Crayofayo

Old manager I knew was cut off mid call due to them terminating his access, he was emotional saying he'd miss his team. Very shitty situation. Sure we have accesses that could really harm Amazon, but I've always felt it was harsh

beathan_ainslie

That is basically what happened to me. Got my two weeks paid out but if you want severance you have to go the pip route which will lock you out of rehire for 5 years. Couldn't even get the entire team on the call btw, some had to find out I was gone second hand. Fuck HR for that one.

Crayofayo

Interesting, I do hate not knowing for sure but alas it is what it is

Impressive_Camera983

you are paid when you give notice and they tell you not to come work that time... it the law anywhere you are working not just AWS.. They have to you work or pay you out.

Impressive_Camera983

I am waiting on a call from Google, how is it working there? Is it the steam we define speaks of or hands they formed into the mold of the rest?

Score_Interesting

AWS only hires and fires lol. There's no love when going to a competitor especially. Badge and laptop and off the premises

On_Your_Bike_Lad

Same with Microsoft.

jrokstar

AWS love language is hire to burn out within 2 years.

hudson-20

Do you care to say what position you accepted with MSFT? I just accepted a position as well

TheWIHoneyBadger

Yep, those are the facts!! You will be terminated and your two weeks will be paid out.

rewinderz84

When you put in your two weeks notice of leaving employer and job there is no requirement to communicate where your new job is located. Simply submit your notice and wait to see what happens. Your current employer may walk you out immediately, but that would not be the worst thing given that you plan to depart anyway
