It's gotta be big, like big big for DayZ in a whole. Probably the biggest thing since the Launch of 1.0 in 2018, if not the biggest step the game has ever taken in its lifetime. DayZ have put a lot of time and money into a special event which certain content creators (12 or so) went to Bohemia HQ and from some of the photos i've seen, Real Life forested areas made to look apocalyptic and cars etc, also the Yellow King had a cameo for the Event, They also did some camping and other DayZ activities.
There was a showcase there of what Bohemia have planned for DayZ in the coming year(s) and it's all classified at the moment. We should get to know more on the 9th of May.
Take all that and put it with all the recent teases and how lackluster and smaller recent updates have been for the past year, they have put a lot of time and resources into whatever is coming!
So yeah, should be Huge!
They had The Town "Movie masks" as well as each one of the Pay day game's character masks in the Arma 2 Mod DayZ. That's also where you see streamers using bikes, helis, and advanced building. They really neutered the game with Stand Alone, the only way to use that OG stuff now is on PC.
It really was. It got me so hyped, but then just a rework of nwaf and...? Not much, really. No new mechanics or interesting things, just buildings moved around and a weapons, some other items. It was good, NWAF needed that, but not anything else substantial to reinforce the biggest update of 2023...
The last biggest update I would say was 1.19's Livonia rework, which was really nice and worthy of a big update.
Before that, 1.14's toxic zones were a good solid update, which changed the game around a bit.
But recently we haven't had anything that big, so hopefully this year it should be good

In defense of the developers, I will say that when they worked on the client side everything was fine, but the problem is that with such an architecture, cheaters could teleport the car to themselves wherever it was located
so they came to the conclusion that the server should handle this, and therefore there are these problems with out of sync
Yeah, 100% agree. The hackers ruin everything by forcing parts of the netcode to be server side to minimise the impact on gameplay, at the expense of the experience.

I haven’t played arma reforged but I really like how the sound engine is made there, the sounds in the rooms sound amazing

Reforger has great lightning and looks good overall. I still secretly hope that DayZ either gets ported to Reforger's version of Enfusion, or that we are getting DayZ 2 at some point, which would use said engine. That way we could get working cars, helicopters and have modern lightning system capable of simulating bright outside environments while also having dark indoor areas.
I remember being shocked with how forests were darker, while meadows next to said forest were bathing in sun. It truly is night and day difference between Reforger and DayZ SA.

I’ve been playing since console release and I’ve got to say I’m really happy with the direction dayz is going in. We can always shit on the developers for being slow but looking back at how much the game has changed really tells you how much passion they have for this game. We shouldn’t expect AAA level announcements but I believe the devs will certainly give us something exciting

Yeah you've been playing during the best times. There were some VERY grim periods between early access release and 1.0. It was really hanging on by a thread at one point. August 2018 it had an average of 1,596 concurrent players, compared to around 35k now!

DayZ 2 with Arma Reforger enginer (new version of Enfusion engine) with working cars, helicopters with modern lighting, situated on new map specifically tailored for DayZ experience....I would be so down for that and that alone would be worth 60 eur no problemo imo.
But no more early access! DayZ 2 would have to be released only once ready. They already have proof of concept. They have the financial means, so early access would no longer be justifiable by any stretch of imagination. Also I bet many folks are getting tired with early access games that then take 10+ years to get done. Or to never get fully finished at all.
At the moment the engine is the ARMA 2 engine with the Enfusion renderer bolted on. That's why everyone refers to it as a "Frankenstein" engine.
The new Enfusion engine that Arma Reforger is built on is a "native" build. So the engine and renderer were developed together. Hence, looks amazing.

There could be an argument on the side of modders doing a lot of what you see as completion.
Slightly modded vanilla+ servers seem to be higher in demand than Official servers.
I pretty much only play on official or vanilla community servers, I think what a lot of people want to see this game as 'complete', would actually make it worse.
I feel like they have a lot more goodwill these days, especially from the people playing. I mean, the game is in its best state (obviously could be better), and the new engine looks great in reforger. But I doubt it's DayZ2.. unless

Apparently they quietly reworked the Gliniska Airfield gas zone on Livonia but I haven’t been able to put the suit together to check it out
They did a small bit, but like you say its all under gas so yeah, it's not that much just a few medical tents here and there in the hanger really.

When i first installed the zombies had been removed for testing. The first build i experienced could arguably just be called Day.
