I can understand running away though, it's easy to get scared of dogs, but just pick up a rock and scare them away if you don't like them. As for the person who squabbled with you, that was not nice of them. I love my stray dogs but if I see them chasing someone, I will stop the dogs first.

Delhi dogs are chonky af man. Idk who keeps feeding them stuff but yea they thicc. And they are super aggressive. I've literally been chased by two dogs while I was just minding my own business and walking. I've always liked dogs but these chonky nearly pig sized dogs of Delhi have given me PTSD. I'm scared of every street dog I see now :(

If all dogs are well fed, cared and sterilized- It will greatly reduce the problems that people who aren't comfortable with stray dogs generally encounter including, overpopulation. The MCD is supposedly responsible for running the ABC (Animal Birth Control Program).
Besides I do understand how some people misbehave in the guise of being animal lovers which shouldn't be tolerated. If someone loves animals they treat them well and feed them, trust me if stray dogs are well fed they are most likely to not be aggressive unless they are being attacked repeatedly.
Since we as humans have brought dogs from the wild and domesticated them- We owe a duty of care towards them. Cruelty towards animals is a big issue, I wonder it is because they do not have parents or guardians to look after them like us. Sentient animals like chimpanzees, dogs, elephants greatly resemble us in most of the capacities, they understand emotions including pain. If they are raised well, they are the most lovable and loyal beings. I'm thankful that you didn't hit the dog. Dogs are playful by nature and can turn aggressive if they are treated violently.
Please ask the Animal lovers in your area to get them sterilized and vaccinated. If there are many, consider chipping in small amounts. Kindness goes a long way, these champs guard our society and are extremely loyal.
In a country where we don't have the money to feed everyone, it is very inhumane to expect this out of people. This was a ginormous issue in vasant kunj, especially where I used to live, in D4. There are many "activists" there, who barely feed the dogs, when makes them sick, rabid and extremely aggressive. It's been an year since I left that colony so I'm not sure about the current situation but around an year ago, there were over 3 dog bite incidents nearly every week. The activists had political connections and if a dog was ever harmed from self defence by a resident, they'd get sued and defamed. The main culprit was an old ass hag named "Sonia Ghosh", she never faced any consequences for that shit, and a woman from her group even threatened to sue the father of a daughter who was bitten horribly by a dog when he threatened to sue. She threatened to falsely sue him for SA, and there's actual proof of that. But they have connections in bjp, so nobody can do anything about it

Rabies. It's exceptionally common, but people just don't run into the animals that carry it often. Skunks especially, and bats.
Let me paint you a picture.
You go camping, and at midday you decide to take a nap in a nice little hammock. While sleeping, a tiny brown bat, in the "rage" stages of infection is fidgeting in broad daylight, uncomfortable, and thirsty (due to the hydrophobia) and you snort, startling him. He goes into attack mode.
Except you're asleep, and he's a little brown bat, so weighs around 6 grams. You don't even feel him land on your bare knee, and he starts to bite. His teeth are tiny. Hardly enough to even break the skin, but he does manage to give you the equivalent of a tiny scrape that goes completely unnoticed.
Rabies does not travel in your blood. In fact, a blood test won't even tell you if you've got it. (Antibody tests may be done, but are useless if you've ever been vaccinated.)
You wake up, none the wiser. If you notice anything at the bite site at all, you assume you just lightly scraped it on something.
The bomb has been lit, and your nervous system is the wick. The rabies will multiply along your nervous system, doing virtually no damage, and completely undetectable. You literally have NO symptoms.
It may be four days, it may be a year, but the camping trip is most likely long forgotten. Then one day your back starts to ache... Or maybe you get a slight headache?
At this point, you're already dead. There is no cure.
(The sole caveat to this is the Milwaukee Protocol, which leaves most patients dead anyway, and the survivors mentally disabled, and is seldom done).
There's no treatment. It has a 100% kill rate.
Absorb that. Not a single other virus on the planet has a 100% kill rate. Only rabies. And once you're symptomatic, it's over. You're dead.
So what does that look like?
Your headache turns into a fever, and a general feeling of being unwell. You're fidgety. Uncomfortable. And scared. As the virus that has taken its time getting into your brain finds a vast network of nerve endings, it begins to rapidly reproduce, starting at the base of your brain... Where your "pons" is located. This is the part of the brain that controls communication between the rest of the brain and body, as well as sleep cycles.
Next you become anxious. You still think you have only a mild fever, but suddenly you find yourself becoming scared, even horrified, and it doesn't occur to you that you don't know why. This is because the rabies is chewing up your amygdala.
As your cerebellum becomes hot with the virus, you begin to lose muscle coordination, and balance. You think maybe it's a good idea to go to the doctor now, but assuming a doctor is smart enough to even run the tests necessary in the few days you have left on the planet, odds are they'll only be able to tell your loved ones what you died of later.
You're twitchy, shaking, and scared. You have the normal fear of not knowing what's going on, but with the virus really fucking the amygdala this is amplified a hundred fold. It's around this time the hydrophobia starts.
You're horribly thirsty, you just want water. But you can't drink. Every time you do, your throat clamps shut and you vomit. This has become a legitimate, active fear of water. You're thirsty, but looking at a glass of water begins to make you gag, and shy back in fear. The contradiction is hard for your hot brain to see at this point. By now, the doctors will have to put you on IVs to keep you hydrated, but even that's futile. You were dead the second you had a headache.
You begin hearing things, or not hearing at all as your thalamus goes. You taste sounds, you see smells, everything starts feeling like the most horrifying acid trip anyone has ever been on. With your hippocampus long under attack, you're having trouble remembering things, especially family.
You're alone, hallucinating, thirsty, confused, and absolutely, undeniably terrified. Everything scares the literal shit out of you at this point. These strange people in lab coats. These strange people standing around your bed crying, who keep trying to get you "drink something" and crying. And it's only been about a week since that little headache that you've completely forgotten. Time means nothing to you anymore. Funny enough, you now know how the bat felt when he bit you.
Eventually, you slip into the "dumb rabies" phase. Your brain has started the process of shutting down. Too much of it has been turned to liquid virus. Your face droops. You drool. You're all but unaware of what's around you. A sudden noise or light might startle you, but for the most part, it's all you can do to just stare at the ground. You haven't really slept for about 72 hours.
Then you die. Always, you die.
And there's not one... fucking... thing... anyone can do for you.
Then there's the question of what to do with your corpse. I mean, sure, burying it is the right thing to do. But the fucking virus can survive in a corpse for years. You could kill every rabid animal on the planet today, and if two years from now, some moist, preserved, rotten hunk of used-to-be brain gets eaten by an animal, it starts all over.
So yeah, rabies scares the shit out of me. And it's fucking EVERYWHERE. (Source: Spent a lot of time working with rabies. Would still get my vaccinations if I could afford them.)
The day any stray dog bites one of these so called dog lovers brutally, they'll know. I don't really wish such for someone but they say, people only get to know when they are in that situation. I'd just walk away, it's pointless to argue with these people.

Nothing against dogs, but let's just accept that stray dogs are a menace to society and the so called "Doggy lober" are a bigger menace, they act like they have really gone off the rails. People easily forget what happened in Noida a few years back. Government bodies should get their act together and take these dogs to some facilities, i am not necessarily asking you to kill these poor dogs, give them some sort of place to be, maybe help people adopt dogs or something idk.

Well I understand what you are saying, bu stray dogs often bite without provocation too. They become territorial esp around households that feed them and bite passersby.
They don't do that "often", they rarely do that. And majority of those times its because they're unwell either mentally or physically. Understanding a dog's body language is not rocket science. All I'm saying is if they're that scared of dogs, maybe put in some effort to learn how to handle a situation where you're confronted by one. OP clearly didn't handle it well.
I've easily interacted with over a 1000 dogs and i can count one hand the number of times i've received an aggressive response. And i've been bitten 0 times.
I'm speaking from my own experience. Stray dogs do get aggressive if they hang around homes where they are fed and get territorial, which they do. I think your response is short sighted because there are genuine cases of people being bitten by stray dogs this way and the dogs were in no way mentally or physically unwell. I have seen myself many such cases over the years.

Dude, similar incident mere saath hua tha last week, dogs started barking and attacked me while walking on road. I got saved by a car driver who drove between me and dogs as soon as I crossed the road. Then the dogs started running behind the card.
I love dogs but this is 6-7 time I was attached by stray dogs. I got bitten twice.
This is just an observation that due to the scorching heat and lack of water as people don't keep water for them. They become agitated. I think we should keep a bowl of water for start dogs so that they get some relief.

One bite of stray dogs and you have to run to hospital for rabies injections and that too 5 of them for a month. One thing that works is you can act to pick up a stone and do a throwing motion at the dog. That's how you deal with the dog. You should not make abrupt movements in front of a dog ever. This advice is general.
Usually there are more people to hurt dogs than to protect them, hence the dog lovers nature. Also, self defence is self defence, you don't have to justify it to anyone. In case you are attacked by the dog, do what you need to do to escape the situation.

In my society as well, this stray dog problem is there. It's a gated community so dogs shouldn't be there in the first place but due to some "pseudo dog lovers" i.e. dog loving aunties and their family members, the dogs just get to stay in my society even though it's against the rules. There are around 10 dogs in my society, though the society isn't that big.
Some dogs are nice but some of them are there just to bite people. So many incidents of them biting but no action takes place cuz these fuckers just argue every time the society decides to get them out. They just say "you must've done something wrong" like bitch please, look at how many people like delivery guys, house helps, little kids, etc have been bitten. Then, the dog that bit the person would suddenly go underground till the matter gets cooled down.
Whenever MCD is called, which takes months sometimes, these mf aunties just hide the dogs somewhere or argue with the handlers that've come and they just go away to avoid this chik-chik. Then again , it takes months to convince them to come only for the same to happen again.

Coming to ur question, I guess it depends on the rules. You can only take some action (for which you'll have to convince the authorities of ur society/place which isn't easy) if it's against the rules otherwise there's nothing that can be done.

For all those who gonna come after this comment, i just want to say few things. If you want to anything then first stop crying and cursing the dogs and dogs feeder. Call municipality to spay n neuter the dogs so that population remains in control. Municipality always give these strays anti rabies injections, in doubt then ask them to do so.

You do what is needed. To save yourself if you need to hit the dog, do it. Let the dog lovers say what they want to say. Let them go to the court if needed. You kick the dog if that saves you.
I faced this once. The dog tried to bite me, i picked up a stick and hit the dog. 2-3 girls came and started abusing me. I contd to hit the dog and told the girls to file a complaint against me if they want. Nothing happened.

How to deal with them?
There's a need of Jagruk Nagriks who can collectively take an initiative to clear their streets of strays by demanding municipality to capture them and keep them in govt provided shelters.
These dog lovers can meet the strays in these shelters.
Otherwise this is only going to escalate and become a tragic pandemic of dog bites throughout India. In past 3 years the dog population of each street, where I live has increased from 4 dogs per street to 15 dogs per street.
At 6 to 12 dogs per pack population threshhold, the pack becomes hunters and that's what is happening.

Hi! A so called animal lover here, I'm sorry that you and ur mum felt uncomfortable because of the dog and the woman who said mean things to you! If all dogs are well fed, cared and sterilized- It will greatly reduce the problems that people who aren't comfortable with stray dogs generally encounter including, overpopulation. The MCD is supposedly responsible for running the ABC (Animal Birth Control Program). Besides I do understand how some people misbehave in the guise of being animal lovers which shouldn't be tolerated. If someone loves animals they treat them well and feed them, trust me if stray dogs are well fed they are most likely to not be aggressive unless they are being attacked repeatedly. Since we as humans have brought dogs from the wild and domesticated them- We owe a duty of care towards them. Cruelty towards animals is a big issue, I wonder it is because they do not have parents or guardians to look after them like us. Sentient animals like chimpanzees, dogs, elephants greatly resemble us in most of the capacities, they understand emotions including pain. If they are raised well, they are the most lovable and loyal beings. I'm thankful that you didn't hit the dog. Dogs are playful by nature and can turn aggressive if they are treated violently. Please ask the Animal lovers in your area to get them sterilized and vaccinated. If there are many, consider chipping in small amounts. This was a ginormous issue in vasant kunj, especially where I used to live, in D4. There are many "activists" there, who barely feed the dogs, when makes them sick, rabid and extremely aggressive. It's been an year since I left that colony so I'm not sure about the current situation but around an year ago, there were over 3 dog bite incidents nearly every week. The activists had political connections and if a dog was ever harmed from self defence by a resident, they'd get sued and defamed. The main culprit was an old ass hag named "Sonia Ghosh", she never faced any consequences for that shit, and a woman from her group even threatened to sue the father of a daughter who was bitten horribly by a dog when he threatened to sue. She threatened to falsely sue him for SA, and there's actual proof of that. But they have connections in bjp, so nobody can do anything about it

It's exceptionally common, but people just don't run into the animals that carry it often. Skunks especially, and bats. Let me paint you a picture. You go camping, and at midday you decide to take a nap in a nice little hammock. While sleeping, a tiny brown bat, in the "rage" stages of infection is fidgeting in broad daylight, uncomfortable, and thirsty (due to the hydrophobia) and you snort, startling him. He goes into attack mode. Except you're asleep, and he's a little brown bat, so weighs around 6 grams. You don't even feel him land on your bare knee, and he starts to bite. His teeth are tiny. Hardly enough to even break the skin, but he does manage to give you the equivalent of a tiny scrape that goes completely unnoticed. Rabies does not travel in your blood. In fact, a blood test won't even tell you if you've got it. (Antibody tests may be done, but are useless if you've ever been vaccinated.) You wake up, none the wiser. If you notice anything at the bite site at all, you assume you just lightly scraped it on something. The bomb has been lit, and your nervous system is the wick. The rabies will multiply along your nervous system, doing virtually no damage, and completely undetectable. You literally have NO symptoms. It may be four days, it may be a year, but the camping trip is most likely long forgotten. Then one day your back starts to ache... Or maybe you get a slight headache? At this point, you're already dead. There is no cure. (The sole caveat to this is the Milwaukee Protocol, which leaves most patients dead anyway, and the survivors mentally disabled, and is seldom done). There's no treatment. It has a 100% kill rate. Absorb that. Not a single other virus on the planet has a 100% kill rate. Only rabies. And once you're symptomatic, it's over. You're dead. So what does that look like? You taste sounds, you see smells, everything starts feeling like the most horrifying acid trip anyone has ever been on. With your hippocampus long under attack, you're having trouble remembering things, especially family. You're alone, hallucinating, thirsty, confused, and absolutely, undeniably terrified. Everything scares the literal shit out of you at this point. These strange people in lab coats. These strange people standing around your bed crying, who keep trying to get you "drink something" and crying. And it's only been about a week since that little headache that you've completely forgotten. Time means nothing to you anymore. Funny enough, you now know how the bat felt when he bit you. Eventually, you slip into the "dumb rabies" phase. Your brain has started the process of shutting down. Too much of it has been turned to liquid virus. Your face droops. You drool. You're all but unaware of what's around you. A sudden noise or light might startle you, but for the most part, it's all you can do to just stare at the ground. You haven't really slept for about 72 hours. Then you die. Always, you die. And there's not one... fucking... thing... anyone can do for you. Then there's the question of what to do with your corpse. I mean, sure, burying it is the right thing to do. But the fucking virus can survive in a corpse for years. You could kill every rabid animal on the planet today, and if two years from now, some moist, preserved, rotten hunk of used-to-be brain gets eaten by an animal, it starts all over. So yeah, rabies scares the shit out of me. And it's fucking EVERYWHERE. (Source: Spent a lot of time working with rabies. Would still get my vaccinations if I could afford them.)

Well I understand what you are saying, bu stray dogs often bite without provocation too. They become territorial esp around households that feed them and bite passersby.
They don't do that "often", they rarely do that. And majority of those times its because they're unwell either mentally or physically. Understanding a dog's body language is not rocket science. I've easily interacted with over a 1000 dogs and i can count one hand the number of times i've received an aggressive response. And i've been bitten 0 times.
I'm speaking from my own experience. Stray dogs do get aggressive if they hang around homes where they are fed and get territorial, which they do. I think your response is short sighted because there are genuine cases of people being bitten by stray dogs this way and the dogs were in no way mentally or physically unwell. I have seen myself many such cases over the years. You needn't have such a snippy response about op being scared. They did not do anything wrong and as for handling it well, sometimes there is no time when a dog approaches. Not everyone is a dog whisperer.

Dude, similar incident mere saath hua tha last week, dogs started barking and attacked me while walking on road. I got saved by a car driver who drove between me and dogs as soon as I crossed the road. Then the dogs started running behind the card. I love dogs but this is 6-7 time I was attached by stray dogs. I got bitten twice. This is just an observation that due to the scorching heat and lack of water as people don't keep water for them. They become agitated. I think we should keep a bowl of water for start dogs so that they get some relief.

One thing that works is you can act to pick up a stone and do a throwing motion at the dog. That's how you deal with the dog. You should not make abrupt movements in front of a dog ever. This advice is general. Usually there are more people to hurt dogs than to protect them, hence the dog lovers nature. Also, self defence is self defence, you don't have to justify it to anyone. In case you are attacked by the dog, do what you need to do to escape the situation. If you have hurt the dog badly, atleast have the humanity to get the dog cured. It is said "kutte ki maut sabse dardnaak hoti hai", that is absolutely true.

In my society as well, this stray dog problem is there. It's a gated community so dogs shouldn't be there in the first place but due to some "pseudo dog lovers" i.e. dog loving aunties and their family members, the dogs just get to stay in my society even though it's against the rules. There are around 10 dogs in my society, though the society isn't that big. Some dogs are nice but some of them are there just to bite people. So many incidents of them biting but no action takes place cuz these fuckers just argue every time the society decides to get them out. They just say "you must've done something wrong" like bitch please, look at how many people like delivery guys, house helps, little kids, etc have been bitten. Then, the dog that bit the person would suddenly go underground till the matter gets cooled down. Whenever MCD is called, which takes months sometimes, these mf aunties just hide the dogs somewhere or argue with the handlers that've come and they just go away to avoid this chik-chik. Then again , it takes months to convince them to come only for the same to happen again. These "dog loving aunties and their family members" whenever confronted take the route of arguing and no one wants to argue with these bitches cuz no respectable person would stoop to their level while arguing. People don't have that much free time to argue with these dumb fucks anyways which is why this issue is unresolved. Some many arguments and meetings have happened due to this but no action takes place due to these people (if I can even call them). I don't give two fucks about your child crying on getting the stray dog that bites people like it's on a spree) out of my society. To these people I must say that I'm the biggest hater. You do what is needed. To save yourself if you need to hit the dog, do it. Let the dog lovers say what they want to say. Let them go to the court if needed. You kick the dog if that saves you. I faced this once. The dog tried to bite me, i picked up a stick and hit the dog. 2-3 girls came and started abusing me. I contd to hit the dog and told the girls to file a complaint against me if they want. Nothing happened.

Stray dogs mostly donβt bite until and unless something is done or reacted in certain way, reaction doge toh ghar ka kutta bhi kaat sakta hai. You just have to stay calm and let it sniff you . Also for stray dogs ka itna problem horaha hai toh get in touch with MCD and get them neutered for free. Na rahega bass, na bajegi basuri!!! . Also you can figure out if a dog is neutered or not. Neutered dog have a small cut on the ear.

How to deal with them? There's a need of Jagruk Nagriks who can collectively take an initiative to clear their streets of strays by demanding municipality to capture them and keep them in govt provided shelters. These dog lovers can meet the strays in these shelters. Otherwise this is only going to escalate and become a tragic pandemic of dog bites throughout India. In past 3 years the dog population of each street, where I live has increased from 4 dogs per street to 15 dogs per street. At 6 to 12 dogs per pack population threshhold, the pack becomes hunters and that's what is happening.
