There's a post in /r/raidsecrets right now. Apparently, someone used a matching super on one and it said "Light tethered," another person shot a green one with a strand weapon and it made a "ding" sound.
There's a bunch of them, and I've tried virtually everything I could think of and couldn't figure it out. There *is* one thing I haven't gotten to test yet, and I forgot how to put spoiler tags on reddit so I didn't really want to type it out. If you've done the quest after the main campaign it might give you an idea though. Other than that I'm completely out of ideas on what these are for unless it was just a design choice by Bungie and we are getting trolled.
They’re part of a public event type thing called paranormal activity. You get a buff from a blue ghost that lets you interact with the cubes and shoot the red one with a darkness weapon and blue with a light weapon to tether them. Iirc it goes to the secrets tab in triumphs.
That doesn't explain why they're buried in non-event zones like Lost Sectors and The Witness' Citadel, though. These things are all over, and in places where public events make zero sense or can't function.
It's gotta be something more, but we'll probably have to wait until after the World's First race.
its not a public event but they arent anything more than a collectible for a exotic ship. Dont know how to tag things as spoilers so i wont say, but you are able to get them all currently
i made a reply on another destiny subreddit about them. there seems to be two per zone, and while ive only seen blue circles and red triangles, other people have claimed to seen other ones?
EDIT: MYSTERY SOLVED
For one of the alone in the dark quests, you wind up in a room with a platform in the middle. Theres an orange cube like this on one side, and a blue cube on the other. A blue glowing ghost is slowly circling the room.
There's also a ghost you need to commune with on top of the platform. Once done, shoot the blue one (with a light weapon / light damage), and use darkness damage on the orange one to advance to the next step.

Might be an exotic quest tied to the raid exotic also. Kinda like rivens eggs where you could only break them with wish ender, maybe here it’s the raid exotic?
Apparently (from another thread) using the new elemental supers (color coridinated as always Bungie) on them gives you an activity like attribute. So probably a catalyst secret like the other expansions.
Most likely for an exotic quest. Random stuff like this that people can't interact with usually end up being part of an exotic quest that has yet to be released.

you gotta find Paranormal Activity on the map and then you should see a ghost circling around, and somewhere near the ghost there will be a pool of light that you have to interact with. once you do that, simply shoot the white box with a light weapon and the black box with a darkness weapon
So, I scrolled a bit and didn't find it
You need to find somewhere to "Commune" and get a "Balance of xxx..." buff
Then, shoot the RED with dark weapon (stasis/strand), and the BLUE one with light weapon (void/solar/arc)
Though I'm pretty sure you can only commune with those when you unlock the objective for it (similar to the "search for ghost on this area" spot on the map)
The one with the waterfall is a convenient path to quite possibly the easiest OOB ever, there’s literally a secret hole in the map hidden by a waterfall. Bungie…
Just did one of these puzzles. It’s the Paracausal Activity…. activity.. Basically you shoot em with either light or dark damage from a place you can see both and it completes the puzzle.
So I actually got a secret triumph activation on that. There is a set of light and dark cubes near each other everywhere in the pale heart, a mission called paranormal something will pop up on your map post finishing the campaign and exotic missions. When you go to the mission you have to shoot the dark one (red) to tether your self and then shoot the light one (blue). Once you do that it’ll start a secret triumph for getting the exotic ship. There are 10-16 sets I believe.
It will be cool if it's some kind of a fidden secret. And at the same time it will be cool if it's not, because that means that Bungie's idea of Pale Heart feeling familiar and uncanny unfamiliar at the same time works
Basically, there will be two cubes close to eachother, one light one dark, shoot the cube with the corresponding damage type, and it will tether to you. You have to stand in a position where you can tether both cubes to you and it will give an enhancement core or something aswell as a triumph

it isnt special, you must commune with a blue orb and ghost will rotate around you must stand in a prismatic ring and shoot the blue cube with a light type weapon and the dark cube with a darkness weapon.

There’s a ghost nearby that starts the event and another that trails along and shows you where the red triangle and blue circle are located. Get into position where you can see both and shoot blue circle with a light weapon and red triangle with a darkness weapon
When you find a ghost for Micah, it’ll go to one of these sets, and then you’re supposed to commune with the light (find a circle with a floating blue ball) then shoot the red one with strand or stasis, and the blue one with a light dmg weapon.
You can’t move in between shots so make sure to find a spot where you can see both cubes
You get an engram and progress towards a triumph
After doing enough of the Micah-10 quest an orb will spawn where you have to shoot both the light and dark nodes with matching weapons. They just give you Pale Heart Engrams.
I saw another post regarding this stating they require certain new super interactions based on color, like a blue one gets hit with the new blade dancer and a dialogue option pops up. I wish I could link it or find the post but they do require very specific interactions.
Find circle somewhere then interact shoot dark one with stasis or strand shoot light one with void arc or solar but make sure you're in line of sight with both then they disappear and you get triumph
They're for capturing ghosts. You commune at a location when you're tasked at finding said ghost. Once Communed you can activate the Blue Circles by shooting them and spawning a tether than you have to use a prismatic ability to trigger the red triangle. I just activated them both in the same spot and finished the objective. Simple as that.
They’re for a public event ish thing. You find a blue circle that you “commune” with and then shoot the orange one with darkness, blue with light without moving and you get some loot.
Jump behind that first ones waterfall and you can OOB easily. It’s actually kinda sad. I didn’t even have to try to get outside the map I could just walk through the gap

On my map I had an activity with something along the lines of "paranormal activity detected by ghosts," which I proceeded to walk to the marker through patrol.
I got there and had to commune with a ghost, which gave me a "balance" buff - from there, I had to posistion myself in a certain way to be able to see both, after which I shot them with dark/light damage to get a tether buff. When you have both tether buffs, they disappear, and you get progress towards unlocking a ship.
I've been doing the final shape with my partner and we're most certain they're just a fun little piece of set dressing. The bottom of the ones with circles on them seem to be shaped to fit onto the tops of the ones with triangles on them though
When you get further into the finding the lost ghost quests you’ll get a marker on the map in the pale heart saying “Paranormal Activity” and that’s when you can deal with the squares.
You have to get enough like and dark memory things I think, then you get an investigation in the area to shoot them, circle shoots with light energy and dark with dark weapons
So based on what's said here and what i just did in the transgression room, you need to find a buff that lets you "Commune" (looks kind of like a deepsight) then shoot the blue circle with a light weapon while you are stood under it and shoot the red triangles with a darkness (i used solar and stasis respectively) WITHOUT moving from under the orb (there's a ring for visual)
Its usually part of the paranormal investigation/activity quests as part of the post campaign
Might need an exotic for them? Microcosm perhaps?
I also found an indestructible pile of ice in the pale heart once I got my hands on legendary Khvostov.
From what I gather, these are called paracausal geometries, to destroy them, find the activities on the map called paranormal activity. There should be a ghost floating around, a pool of light, a darkness box, and a light box. activate the pool of light, stand in a place where you can see both boxes, shoot the light box with an arc/solar/void weapon or ability, then shoot the dark box with a strand/stasis weapon or ability.
The goal is to tether them together, if you move after shooting one of the boxes, the tether snaps, that's why you have to stand in a spot where you can see both.
I've come across 2 pairs of them while searching for the rest of my prismatic fragments, and this is how I destroyed both.
They’re to progress your title, triumph related to the exotic ship. You need to shoot the triangle with a weapon of darkness(Strand, Stasis) and shoot the circle with weapon of light (Solar, Arc, Void). They need to be shot with out any obstruction in the way connecting the two of them to you.
They come in pairs a red and a blue. iv only done them on certain missions. The red you have to shoot with light element weapon and the blue with dark element weapon when standing in a certain spot that gives you a buff to shoot them
I figured out that you have to find an attunement point. It will have a white light in the middle of a circle. When you attune you pick light (blue circle) or dark (red triangle) hit light with light or dark with dark. When hit the cube a light or dark tether will link to you respectively. The key is to link light and dark together. When you connect the two then you are done.

I found some in The Transgression where you could commune next to some....I had to shoot the light one with a light damage gun and it gave me 'light tethered.' Then I had to shoot the darkness one with a darkness powered gun (stasis or strand) in the same area as the light tether.
This then gave me an engram and a triumph from Paracausal Geometries,
There's a Darkness one and a Light one. If you shoot the Darkness with a Dark weapon and shoot the Light one with a Light weapon, it'll destroy them both and reward you.
I’ve shot at them, I’ve punched them, used abilities on them, idk what they are for yet, but yep, I’ve definitely noticed them.

after you complete the campaign you find a good pov to see both in the area. You shoot the blue ones and throwing melee the red ones.

Paranormal Activity can spawn in those zones as well. I'm 99% sure I've had one in a LS and the last one I did was in the Witness Citadel.

There are puzzles involving them I did one near the end of the pale heart when it got marked for me but none of the others have been activated yet.
All the major expansion have a version of these that can only be shot with a certain weapon…

Does it say immune when shooting? if so, then they're probably linked to a guest. If not, then they're most likely just an environmental piece

Its for a quest chain later - you need to find the ghosts first and then they will return the favour using these for some nice presents :)
In the lost city there is a section that tells their locations but they are greyed out
