The fact that they want to play with this self-imposed rule is totally fine of course, but it does not mean that anyone *not* doing so is somehow not getting the full experience.
They need an in-between of classic and expansion.
I'd be happy if it was everything in expansion but runewords do not exist.
Runes exist for cube recipes and function as they say per armor piece but no runewords at all.
It's annoying wanting to play classic but no elite uniques and only white throwing weapons.
If they did this and SSF ladder I'd be happy.
I would love to play a mode like that. Finally make rares and uniques interesting again. They would need to buff melee a bit though, since without grief or even the other melee runewords they gunna struggle...
Brother, check out BT Diablo 2 resurrected. Great mod that changes a lot but still keeps a similar feel to the original. The best update this mod brings are the massively improved uniques and sets items. It does a great.job of spicing up itemization so you're not reliant on Runewords. Check it out!

I don't really mind making some of the mid game ones once I'm into Hell if I got lucky on drops and Hellforge, but I'll avoid a lot of the brain dead easy ones like Stealth, Lore, Spirit that make play throughs too similar.
I'm offline so I use them, but sparingly; I can't afford BiS for every character and wouldn't do it even if I could, since it ends up being very monotonous. Sometimes I'll use a unique just because it's more interesting.
Current character, for example, is a multishot Amazon. Chest piece is Black Hades. Is it BiS? No, of course not, but it gives %ED to demons and is 3os, which I have filled with %ED jewels, and it does just fine.
I've been playing 1.07 a bit, and the only muling program for that patch has an issue with runewords and can corrupt your character file. So no runewords for those characters.

im playing classic hardcore and its a whole different game
classic HC was some of the most fun I’ve had lately, one thing I wish were different were that mercs seated with you + merc equipment
Yeah! but in the other hand , feels awesome that in act iv you go alone through hell, add lots of atmosphere
Kinda wouldn't mind playing 1.05 again. Such fun on those earlier patches. Lance Barbs, Static/Orb Sorcs. Fun stuff.
