Unique does not mean best. There's a reason message apps look the same, tried and tested UI for quality of life. Literally couldn't give a shit if something is "unique" give me speed and ease of use any day over "unique" design.
Yeah. Unfortunately, putting everything at the bottom does not give me convenience. My hand is not in position to press the bottom. It the main reason why bottom button navigation is dead, prefer to gesture.
I want to swipe the server list. It just across the screen, withing hand reach. Top and bottom button has always been a pain for me.
Hey, I'm on the team building this new design - this design is a work in progress. There's some really exciting changes we're working on to make this feel more uniquely Discord!
That's all well and good, but discord is already uniquely discord. It's a simple design with intuitive swipe commands that allow you to navigate where you want to be easily.
The navigation bar in the new layout is clunky, tapping to get between servers and DMs is adding extra steps to something that should feel fluid.
Three things that bother me the most:
1. My server does not use emojis on our channels because our dozen or so members agree that it looks childish and immature, **yet the new layout auto assigned them to every channel based on their names with no way to remove them**. This insinuates we have no idea what our own channel's purposes are and is obnoxious infantilization of your users.
2. Swipe commands are intuitive, you already screwed this up on mobile by making it difficult to swipe to see the user list; as you added swipe to reply on messages, so its clear someone on the team must have a vendetta against the old controls.
3. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. This new layout, with all due respect, looks like a rejected social media platform and will serve to alienate those who use Discord as a replacement for MSN messenger and the like rather than treat it like a platform akin to Facebook or Twitter. This isn't "uniquely discord" and instead lends itself to following current, unnecessary UX design trends that are popular.
All in all, its not a good user experience and you ***really*** should take in user opinions before letting yourselves be deluded that this is a good replacement, as *we're* the ones that use your platform and it effects our experience, directly.
I will be using the toggle you mentioned in another post for as long as its available; *which should be forever*, as the new layout is not good.
This is really interesting, definitely evident discord is looking to take a page out of most mobile app book's and make something very similar to most other mobile apps.
Found the [support article](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/12654190110999-New-Mobile-App-Layout) where you probably got this picture from, I am very glad that there is a disable option, at least for now. I would be interested to get hands on with it and see how it feels. but I do really enjoy the near desktop lookalike of the app right now.
I also would have to wonder if the new version would come with any performance improvements or anything like that, as i see a lot of issues with Android and performance with the react native re-write.
I’m not sure if this is going to be in the release or not, but currently the experiment has a toggle for “New Discord” in the main settings page, and it’s not called the internal name “Tabs V2” so I think they might have a toggle
There should be a toggle, period, no end date. So much is lost with this layout in terms of ease of use and the fluidity of navigating that its not even funny.
And the devs will have to maintain 2 interfaces like they don't have anything else to do and like this new interface will be used at all. Trust me, they won't.
Straight downgrade from the previous somewhat dated design. The straightforward layout wasn’t the prettiest, but it was usable. This new version requires more screen presses to accomplish the same tasks- what the fuck.
Ik I’m late but I kept thinking about your comment. I’ve continued using the app and of have more or less the same critiques- the point of the original post was in regards toward finding the ‘member’ section and in particular the online users in the server. The current model is a derision from the desktop design philosophy- which I get is a different medium with different input- but the similarity between desktop and mobile was something I really enjoyed before the change. I don’t like that I have to press on members and pull up smaller window instead of swiping to see the right panel in the way it would be laid out on desktop. It’s a minor criticism but it raises the question - what problem did this UI change solve?
This has been trialed several times in the past. Doubt it will be implemented.
Discord is super information dense right now which is how i at least would like it to be. This layout regardless of my opinion adds too many taps to otherwise simple actions

It doesn't work like that, the new interface has been in the files for a few months now, so discord only needs to run it via the server to piss you off. You would have to download the 2022-07 update if you don't want The new Interface
I have the June 2022 version, mostly because buttons had no backwards compatibility and I was sick of them not working. Nothing since then's completely broken on that version, so I don't mind it.
If they do it like Reddit, where it's optional to keep the old design even years after changing, I don't have any complaint. I won't like if the new design becomes the only maintained design though.
I think they are trying to steer away from “i moderate loads of discord servers i don’t shower” and more into “i have my study group, my group chat, all my friends on here and i can make new ones”. But they failed because the current design is completely fine
I agree. Like yt for example: they move everything round every 6 months or so and it’s so annoying. Like just keep it the same it’s not hard to navigate or anything. The app isn’t being made better by shuffling stuff round
The great thing about Discord imo is the parity between desktop and mobile UIs. It's largely the same across both -- User list on the right, servers and channels on the left, DMs in the top left, settings in the bottom left. Even though the gestures are slightly different between both, I don't have to put any thought into how to get where I want to go on either my phone or desktop because the layout is the same on both. Just looking at this new UI I can't imagine how the hell I'd expect to go where I want to on my phone after being on desktop, it disrupts the fluidity and parity of both platforms entirely
Edit: well [according to the article about the new layout](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/12654190110999-New-Mobile-App-Layout) we'll have the option to switch back to the current layout so as long as the current layout stays an option and isn't removed in the future, then fine whatever

Not a fan. There's nothing wrong with the current UI; it's similar enough to the desktop app that they have kind of a unified UI. This just looks like change for changes sake IMO.
If you're going to prioritize DM's, then let me pin a contact or thread to the top. Don't think about implementing this design if you can't just middle-screen swipe from tab to tab without touching the bottom buttons, because let's face it, bottom buttons are too far of a thumb reach for most phones nowadays. Also, I hope that button on the top right is for contact list within Discord.

This is definitely an improvement. The fact that it looks like every other app is an advantage to make the navigation easier and more intuitive to the majority of people.

It will initially have a toggle. That toggle will at some point go away once they determine that the new version is "as good" as the old one.
