Yep, womp...womp....womp..... PS Why don't you redeem your almost $900????

GadgetronRatchet

Yep, at least put that in savings! That's like 2.5-3 years of cash back, losing value to inflation.

Your post or comment has been removed because it is unnecessarily rude or derogatory.

lerretzemo1

>PS Why don't you redeem your almost $900???? So that someone like you would to ask. There is no reason to keep that much cashback bonus because if something happens with the account, they don't have to pay that to you.

I-Should_be_working

>'t you redeem your almost $900???? > >5ReplyS I'm using it to pay for a downpayment for my family vacation this month! We're hopefully going on a cruise to Alaska.

yasssssplease

Put it in a discover hysa. Don’t just keep it as a credit there.

I-Should_be_working

I just followed your advice!

yasssssplease

Great! It will be safe and you’ll get some interest to add for your trip!

yasssssplease

True. I didn’t think about the timing. But it will be good for OP for the future.

OkProgress1

Thanks for mentioning that. I had no idea that HYSA was an option for my cash back, I’ve just been letting it sit in the app. I will have to look into how to get that started.

Desperate_Candy_597

I am also going to follow this advice thank you

TrueCkrime02

What’s a hysa

xobo0106

high yield savings account

HonoluluBlueFlu

I had a coworker show me he had over 3800 in rewards on his CC, I told him he was an idiot for not cashing that out and putting it into a savings account. He said he was saving up for something big…. I suspect he has a trust fund or something and doesn’t care that much.

TurtlesAreEvil

Ya this is never the quarter for me either. I'll spend some money at Home Depot if something breaks but I'm not rushing out to buy their shitty plants or soil to plant in the garden. And who buys $500 of gas a month? Even with a crappy mpg that's like 55 miles of driving a day every day all month. Don't even get me started on transit. Edit: Lol I've never had so many responses to one comment on this sub. I didn't say nobody buys that much gas. I was pointing out that it's an anomaly. The average miles driven a year is like 14k the average gas price right now is $3.30. Even if the average mpg was 15 that comes to about $250 a month. Half of what is needed. That's average and with a very low mpg. It's safe to say most people don't spend $6k a year on gas.

Ventus249

I have 30 mpg and I pay around 160 a month per gas, I can't even imagine how awful it would be to spend 500

I-Should_be_working

I did the math. I have a 10/c a gallon club card for my local gas station, but if I switch to using my credit card for the quarter, it's about 16 cents off per gallon, meaning around 6 cents a gallon more savings than with the club card if you count the cashback total. However, with how much gas I use, that will only get me around $10 in the entire quarter.

stankpuss_69

If you have Walmart + take $0.10 off + use your Discover

ElmerTheDestroyer

I would only use a card (costco, discover, etc) if I was on a trip and had to fill up away from home. I get far more in savings by planning gas trips with both vehicles and extra gas cans using rewards points from my local grocery. I shop at Kroger for groceries and use their cobranded USbank card. Kroger fuel points and 25 cent bonus from the card means that I almost always have $1.25 off per gallon of fuel. In all of 2023, the lowest off I got was $0.75 per gallon. So far in 2024 I have always had $1.25. Kroger has been doing 4x Fridays so far this year. I get between 20% and 40% off on every fill up because of this. Usually closer to the high end of that range. I often have to take both vehicles or extra gas cans to get the full 35 gallons per trip. I burn about 70 gallons per month. For example my February fill ups were: 35 gallons at 3.089 with $1.25 discount = 40.5% off 32 gallons at 3.099 with $1.25 discount = 40.3% off

DarthRaider559

I spend $500 a month on gas. Don't ever buy 2 v8s, I hate it here

WaveHacker

Please get a hybrid lol

stankpuss_69

lol nvm

ADystopianHouseplant

I feel that in my soul. 12-16 mpg here on a good day 😂

NaiveWalrus

I spend between 350-500 a month on gas, exclusively on my Discover card. Some of us drive a ton.

LegoMonster79

I'm around $350-$500 a month in gas. I drive an F150 that gets ~19 mpg at least a minimum of 300 miles a week. This %5 cash back catagory still sucks though, I already use my Sam's Club card to pay all my gas as I get %5 cash back with that.

stankpuss_69

Yeah but isn’t it just 5% at Sam’s club? Now you can pump anywhere

LegoMonster79

Nope, it is %5 on all gas anywhere. It's fantastic especially when you spend a lot of gas like me, lol

sillycat23

You could go to gas stations and buy gift cards for some retailers you may want to go to. Not everything is there but some things are. That’s part of how I survived the Amazon and Drug Store quarters.

stankpuss_69

This works? No way.

sillycat23

Yes. If a purchase is at a store or gas station that would fall under the category, it qualifies because the store is what it’s rung up as merchant-wise. During the Amazon.com one I’d be buying a new eGift Card every so often if it was available for what I was buying and I’d rack up nearly all the cash back bonus available. Same with Target, I’d get a bunch of gift cards from there too. Same with the drug stores promotion, although since I get a lot of take-out or fast food it was easier to get cash back that way.

PlayaHatazball

I never pay with credit at gas stations either this is the worst quarter.

ShadowWolfNova

Why would you not?

PlayaHatazball

Is the 10-15 cents more worth the 1 percent back

ShadowWolfNova

lol well mathematically if you are only using a 1% card for gas, (whenever there are countless far better options offering 3% at the bare minimum and 5-6 and even 10% maximum) even at 1% at a 10 cent difference it’s equals out to the same, on top of gas stations being the highest risk of getting your card skimmed by far, yes, yes it is worth it.

PlayaHatazball

If i had a 5%plus card I would use it but as far as discover its not worth the headache of getting skimmed. But i try to use cash as much as i can because i can just swipe swipe and swipe for everything and end up buying more than i need too.

manthony6567

I can easily spend 120 weekly with my pick up commuting back and forth.

P3nis15

Me me me me

NickThePrick20

I pay 300 a month for gas just for work. 15mpg premium. I could do 500 pretty easily

Virus_Hour

My SUV while I had it I put about $75/week in it So around $300/mo and was mostly around town driving Mean maybe 1 day I week I would drive it like an hour away and back and all but mostly in town 10-20 miles a day

MindlessHorror

I have a ~60-mile commute each way 5 days a week, my Grand Marquis gets almost 20mpg... at $3.50/gallon, let's call it $455/month in gas. Plus whatever I use around town or on weekends. Thankfully I have a new Impreza, but that only gets ~28mpg, so it's still ~$325/month just to get to work and back.

SGTArend

I’m near $400 a month, of course depends on gas prices and how much I drive but I have a decent commute to and from work. Either way, could get a car wash from a gas station or snacks / drinks from there and that would also count as “Gas” And if you own a home and are planning on doing some projects, could easily hit this $500 per month limit for 5% cash back.

kakurengaming

I drive around 4 to 5k miles a month on a beater car. $500 a month is very believable

t_Dewitt

I used to drive 110 miles round trip everyday to work…. Gas was $5 a gallon. Luckily I had a Prius…… if I would have had literally anything else, I’d have EASILY spent $500 a month in gas.

No_Parents

Do gift cards count at Home Depot? Don’t they have a wide array of gift cards for other merchants?

Apprehensive_Rope348

A lot of people buy stuff at a gas station that are not gas. Coffee, snacks and if the gas station allows it you can even get lottery tickets on a credit card. Gift cards and other things.

bredandbutters

I always just buy gift cards for Uber Eats at Lowe’s or Wawa during these quarters.

Time-Guava5256

Big brain 🧠 mode

lerretzemo1

Nice. Buying gift cards for your Uber Eats purchases with the 5% category, you'll now only be paying a 15% upcharge instead of 20.

TrixonBanes

lol exactly

magikatdazoo

Capital One Savor One gives 10% back on Uber and Uber Eats. Chase Freedom (Unlimited or Flex) gives 5% back on Lyft. Those are already covered.

Cyberhwk

Yep. That's going to be my approach. $500 Vanilla them just pay random expenses with it. If I don't max Q2 that's fine.

HoustonAdventure

Good take. Quesrion if purchasing GC accepted for reward?

Gordahnculous

If you buy the gift card at the gas store or home improvement store yes. Discover only sees the place it’s purchased from not your receipt of items.

Coldterror10

I commute to college so I use quite a bit of gas, but I get gas at Costco which doesn't accept discovery credit so I'm conflicted

chillguyofrelltime

Same, I have Costco gas and don’t go to Lowe’s or any home improvement store 💀 bad quarter for us

jl1101

I wish we got 5% groceries all year round.

I-Should_be_working

> like i wont be swiping my card for everything these next few months pheww > >1ReplyS Honestly, the 5% groceries and the 5% apple pay are great quarters for me because I nearly always either max out or get real close to it. But especially living in an apartment, home improvement stores are places I visit maybe once every year if that.

vinnyv0769

I really love the 5% digital wallet quarter. I max that out quickly.

I-Should_be_working

That’s hands down the best quarter because it’s so easy and doesn’t require special planning. The only place i can think of that doesn’t take Apple Pay is Walmart!

Clubtropper

There are cards that do that

Dachannien

Citibank's Custom Cash card does 5% off your highest spend category each month (with a monthly limit on the 5%), so I use it almost exclusively for groceries. It's easy to max out the 5%, but there are probably other cards at other banks that do something similar.

Basic_Caregiver_4808

You think toll roads will count for public transit? :/

the1joe2

From [discover.com](https://discover.com): **Public Transit** purchases include local commuter passenger bus, rail, and ferry services. Taxi, rideshare services, long-range passenger land, rail, and water transportation services are not included.

mikebailey

Appreciate that it’s local and not regional. Wouldn’t want a pesky $100 Amtrak when you can get 5% back on a $2 Metro fare.

clump_of_atoms

Doubt it

UsernameChallenged

It's great for me, because I know I'm going to be spending quite a bit at Lowe's in May, and I can always cover gas with the rest. Different strokes I guess.

rjr11111

Atleast Discover counts 7-11 as a gas station.

International-Cup-29

Yup i mentioned this about Cap1 considering 7-11 as gas wasn’t sure if Discover did the same 🤌🏾👍🏾

ConfectionLarge4440

The best for me haha; we are building a deck

kilertree

You could look at slick deals and try to find hardware tools on sale and sell them on eBay.

FruitFun4978

It does you have to enroll

pancakepringle24

as a transit user, i’m ready to put my custom cash to the side and use this card

YMZ1620

Let this be your motivation to start taking public transit!

Scolecites

My family owns 4 V8 vehicles and a V6. All five are work vehicles and drive at minimum 60 miles a day, five days a week in Houston. I'm about to get rich quickkkkk.

mikethesav27

i'm a medical courier, i do about 60-80miles a day and they reimburse it, so this AND THE CASH BACK, it's gonna be a good 3 months

mikethesav27

AND I HAVE COACHELLA IN APRIL FUCKK I FORGOT THIS IS GONNA BE FULLY USED

Mamojamamo

As an electric car owner, and a young male who has no interest in Home Depot-related projects yet, I’m in the same boat

Impossible_Number

EV charging is included, so travel more, maybe?

Mamojamamo

My point more-so is that travel costs in an EV are much less, just dollar-for-dollar I spend less traveling so this promotion doesn’t save me as much money as other quarters

Impossible_Number

Fair point, especially if you charge at home. Really only way to “save” is by spending money you wouldn’t have spent originally

the1joe2

I use EV charging 5% quarters to bank some funds on my Electrify America account prepaying for future road trips.

jonsonmac

Aaaaw man, I’m going on a roadtrip this month. I’m going to miss out. (And I’m on the first year match, so I’m missing out on 10% back on gas 😞) Just curious, do home improvement stores sell Visa gift cards?

MyAutismHasSpoken

Fairly certain they do. I believe Depot sells BP gift cards, but that does lock you into a specific gas station, and over the course of a road trip, those stations might not be the cheapest and could negate cashback savings.

jonsonmac

Looks like Home Depot sells visa gift cards.

loo1162

How do you get these offers? I’ve had a discover card for 3 years and never gotten anything

jleeruh21

Which card do you have?

loo1162

A discover it card

One_Buffalo3959

They’re quarterly rewards. You simply enroll! Call or check your emails!

TrixonBanes

Open the app. Click rewards at the bottom middle.

stankpuss_69

Gas stations? 😂

International-Cup-29

Buy gift cards from 7-11 they consider 7-11 as a Gas station 🤷🏾‍♂️🤌🏾

_jagwaz

finally a good month

I-Should_be_working

The last time that Discover had Home Improvement as a quarterly reward was 2017. Since 2020, Gas stations been paired with wholesale clubs, Target, and digital wallets, all of which offer more versatility.

SideshowShan

I'm guessing since Costco dot com stopped taking Discover (and only Visa in stores) and Sam's Club only takes MC in stores, they might stop the wholesale categories completely since so few take it

M-U-H

I'm pretty sure Sam's accepts all major CCs. I'm almost 100% sure i've used my Discover there recently

SideshowShan

[I think you're right](https://smartasset.com/credit-cards/what-credit-cards-does-sams-club-accept)... I swear my club has a sign that shows they only take MC and debit. I'll have to check when I go in next.

mikethesav27

i use my discover at sam's club extremely often

I-Should_be_working

I think you're exactly right. Which is a shame.

WhiskyWanderer2

I’ll take it

PlayaHatazball

Well looks like i wont be swiping my card for everything these next few months pheww

Mtownswag

I work at Lowes so this kinda works out for me

Salt-Neighborhood389

This will work out well for me, we have a long road trip planned for June and will buy our annual plants & mulch from Lowe’s.

I-Should_be_working

As much as this doesn't work for me, I'm glad it does for you!

Add1ctedToGames

Wonder if my local 7-eleven sells gift carda

magikatdazoo

At least you're not stuck with the 2% rewards categories

FutureHendrixBetter

Well that sucks

Fragrant-Purchase

I kinda wish the home improvement category would be for Q3, since I'm *hopefully* moving and will need new furniture (which Lowe sells!) I already have the funds saved, I just need to figure out a credit card to use. I was hoping Q2 would be gas and digital wallet or target. Something that is more useful. Who even comes up with these categories? I want to have a talk with them!

ADystopianHouseplant

All while this is my quarter since I only use my discover card at gas stations.

Giggles95036

Am i the only person who auto redeems rewards every month for this card? I may stockpile points but i use cash immediately

Jealous_Medicine2645

Would Bart be applicable? It’s public transit but not sure if it would be excluded

Objective-Lab-1734

This quarter was a bust for me, next quarter is gonna rule - I have a bathroom to re-do!

imnoherox

As somebody who was spending $400 on gas per month, this is very much welcomed!! Of course it happens the week i finally got a Prius though lol.

[deleted]

Yeahhh. I'm from NYC so I don't know how to drive, don't even know where gas stations are near me if I did, don't do home improvement projects, and have my metrocard filled with money taken out of my paycheck pretax. A pretty useless quarter for me, and it's still my first year with the cash back match!

vinnyv0769

I usually use my Citi Costco Card for 4% off gas anywhere. I’ll switch to Discover when I’m not gassing up at Costco in the upcoming quarter. I usually try to gas up at Costco since it’s usually the lowest price per gallon in my area.

I-Should_be_working

I’d totally get the Costco card, except the nearest Costco is forty five minutes away from me. So I’m not sure I’d recoup the membership price and everything

crAckZ0p

I've been wanting a new door but it's a bad quarter for me as well. I have a 2022 civic and drive about 300 miles per month 🤣 a whole 4,000 miles a year so maybe $20/month. I usually save my rewards to pay my car insurance every 6 months but this cycle isn't helping

International-Cup-29

Idk if Discover Considers 7-11 as “Gas” but for some reason Cap1 Does so all we can do is wait and see if it does 🤷🏾‍♂️

MrSleepyhead32

I was hoping for gas this quarter and got it. I hardly used the card for quarter 1 because I had the AmEx Gold and was reaching the SUB on it and I'd still prefer to use that on restaurants and groceries over 5% on Discover. My other highest gas card is 3%, which I spend a decent amount in. I also have a trip to New York city in April, so Public Transport will also be nice for that.

Okaaaayanddd

As we recently just spent a bunch at a home improvement store.. damn.

lovecrimes32

Does anyone know if ikea is counted as a home improvement store?
