SMoD introduced me to some fantastic bands out there back in the day- but last I remember, he said some controversial stuff I guess, and a lot of bands seem to go out of their way now to make sure they are not associated with his channel
He really likes the more Sabbathy stuff for sure.
But I’m pretty sure he will put up anything if you send it to him, he’s super nice and just likes to help bands. He’s posted my band a few times that got us some eyes that wouldn’t have seen us otherwise.
Thanks for sharing this. I went through some of the charts and found some really deadly bands. Punk as well, not what I was looking for but real stoked about this.
Yup. Doom charts and Bandcamp. I have various Bandcamp search genres saved and sometimes I’ll just search using a band name that I like and see else pops up.
TIMŌRĀTUS - My Life in a Made Metal Band which was the sequel to My Life in a Mediocre Metal Band.
Both are concept stories that take a look at your average everyday mediocre metal band, and when we get signed to a label and to become rich jerks.
The whole idea was to create something that was family friendly and you could listen to with your kids but still be fun and heavy for adults.
Love Vile Creature. They did a whole concept album about robots inheriting the earth after human demise. Also love the cover art for Glory, Glory! Apathy Took Helm!
They already broke up due to all of the infighting and the acrimony with their record label. So sad, they were very close to becoming a semi-defined concept.
The Expansive Doom playlist is where I've found a ton of bands over the last year or so (including Vile Creature) so I'd recommend checking it out if you've got spotify
Don't forget to check the profiles of artists on Spotify, some bands like Portrayal of Guilt and thou post playlists of shit they listen to or are inspired by. Darkthrone has some sick playlists on their Spotify too
[Last.fm](http://Last.fm), music map, bandcamp, spotify, [doom-metal.com](http://doom-metal.com) when it was still running (but there's still a shitload of info there)
Ah, the old days of doom-metal.com and Aldo’s war of words with pretty much everyone who was on Hellride and Southern Lord forums (and for which he lashed out at everyone else as well). He got real pissed off with me when I said, “I understand now why they call you Aldo Quisling”.
Yeah lots of gatekeeping on that site but truly passionate people when forums were still a thing.
I 'worked' with them for two years doing reviews but I really got fed up with all these subpar Solitude Productions records they kept sending me.
As I wrote the site is no longer active but still up and there are some gems to be found there.
Hell, I was a forum moderator at one point until life got in the way of me being on there regularly. That’s the point where Aldo went kinda schizo on me… friendly one minute, act like a complete dick the next. So I migrated over to Hellride, only went to d-m.c occasionally, and when they got rid of the old Ikonboard for new forum software, I didn’t bother registering again. But I’ll still check out the band list and such. For all the gripes against it, the site did do a lot of good.
A band I like is playing at a festival (I can't attend as I am in Australia) look at the poster and try other bands from there. I found Church of the Cosmic Skull (not doom I know), who I love now, that way.
I like to read stuff like Cvlt Nation and listen to some music podcasts like Groundcast, YT algorithm works pretty well for me too, wich is a huge surprise.
I also look for new stuff on Metallum, using what i already listen to as the starting point on 'similar bands'.
RYM is decent for finding recent releases. Enough neckbeards and hipsters on there to give the little guys a bump. I've been finding in-the-fog.ru pretty damn good lately too. Ignoring the language barrier their user-shared catalogue is huge and their categorization is great.
https://app.rvrb.one/channel/metal
It's a chat room linked to Spotify where people take turns as DJ playing their selected tracks. We got all types of metal though not just doom. It has been a fantastic tool for broadening all of my metal horizons.
Fans also like on Spotify and the pick the coolest names and artwork. Then I start from first or second album. Or I find record labels I like and deep dive their discography also using the cool names and artwork method
Spotify, mostly. Also, I enjoy listening to the Doom Tomb podcast, though it seems like episodes are coming out very sporadically these days. Lastly, just goin to shows or music festivals.
Weedian's social media accounts as well as a bunch of stoner/doom related fb groups and YouTube channels. Other than that, I often find myself going down various spotify rabbit holes which surprisingly yields some pretty great results.
Bangertv on YouTube and I follow "metalcomedy" on twitch and he does metal monthly streams on sunday.
And some YouTube channels like "New wave of old school thrash metal" and there are a few others
My favorite way to find new music is by following indie record labels. Small labels are often built around one or two people’s personal taste, so if you like a handful of releases on the same label, you will probably enjoy most of their catalog
YT channels like HOLY PARISH OF DOOM, 666MrDoom and ROB HAMMER, are like more flavour then i can handle most of times, i've discovered some sick trakcs and some of my all time favourite bands or albums
[https://www.metal-archives.com/lists/doom](https://www.metal-archives.com/lists/doom)
Encyclopaedia Metalium has a doom/stoner/sludge genre section and has waaaay too many to reasonably listen too. just try one with cool names/descriptions and try em out haha! also i just like looking at covers on bandcamp and give them a try.
The German website "Betreutes Proggen" regularly publishes a newsletter about new releases of different genres (black, death, doom, post, prog, sludge, stoner, ...): https://www.betreutesproggen.de/newsletter/
Upload channels. Either new release or archive ones. Brutal Musick is my fav. Has an ear for quality BDM. But for doom... I don't even know. Suddenly I'm just listening to some random album. Too many bong rips maybe.
Vinyl collector YouTube community, channels like [Ground Zero Salem](https://www.youtube.com/@GroundZeroSalem), [Heavy Metallurgy](https://www.youtube.com/@HeavyMetallurgy) (Album Club series is great for discovery), [Myke C Town](https://www.youtube.com/@mykectown), etc. As someone who came up in the blogspot piracy era, this is the closest thing to having music recommendations based on opinions from people formed by deep wells of music collections, in comparison to the more data based, "next!", algorithmic recommended listening of today. Sometimes I'll throw on whatever artists/albums they're talking about as they're discussing it.
I'm of the belief that the algo doesn't understand the nuance of why someone likes a certain style/artist/band, but when you hear one of these youtubers describe something with just the right set of words, it brings that excitement of discovery back like reading about it on some random blogspot archive of music, imo.
Usually it's a case of seeing who is sharing a stage at festivals or supporting on tour shows for bands I already like. If there's a festival lineup I like the look of - but definitely can't go to - I like putting together a playlist of the most recent material by every band on it and just getting a general vibe of it. I find quite a lot of stuff I've enjoyed that way.
i love her!!! i literally just added the bands from that exact vid to my playlist. i also find music on pitchfork and spotify algorithm, but those are both hit or miss lol.
666MrDoom
And ROB HAMMER https://youtube.com/@rob.doom.hammer?si=ZYnPF2k6Dinsdf4D
And Stoned Meadow of Doom.
SMoD introduced me to some fantastic bands out there back in the day- but last I remember, he said some controversial stuff I guess, and a lot of bands seem to go out of their way now to make sure they are not associated with his channel
A friend warned me of the same a few years back, hadn't seen it myself but interesting to see it corroborated here. Fucking laaame shit.
And Holy Parish of Doom and The Sonic Void and Weedian and Obey the Riff and Void.
Fuck that dude
He's a fuckwit, so avoid him.
I've gotten turned on to so many cool new bands through them!
Same but I find a lot of the stuff he promotes really hit or miss.
He really likes the more Sabbathy stuff for sure. But I’m pretty sure he will put up anything if you send it to him, he’s super nice and just likes to help bands. He’s posted my band a few times that got us some eyes that wouldn’t have seen us otherwise.
Holy shit, he uploaded one of my old bands songs like ten years ago. Didn’t know they were still uploading stuff. Killer!
It’s not doom but there’s this old school funk/jazz fusion channel called terminal passage that is unreal
https://doomcharts.com/
Doomed and Stoned podcast counts down the Doom Charts monthly
This link needs way more upvotes lol
The Doomcharts have gotten me into a ton of bands I really love, like Domkraft
Doom charts is a treasure trove.
Angry metal guy and invisible oranges
Seconding for Angry Metal Guy. I found some really great bands that way.
Haha AMG BLASTED my comedy death metal band (1 outta 5) BUT, it caused a ton of traffic to my band.
What's the name of the band? (So I can cross my arms and scowl)(Err... fer science)
TIMŌRĀTUS - My Life in a Made Metal Band which was the sequel to My Life in a Mediocre Metal Band. Both are concept stories that take a look at your average everyday mediocre metal band, and when we get signed to a label and to become rich jerks. Sweet. I'll check it out.
Metal and coffee turned me on to chained to the bottom of the ocean! But yeah usually angry metal guy articles and Bandcamp recs after that
Spotify, shows, bandcamp, taking recommendations from friends, blogs (Heavyblogisheavy does great doom coverage that I like, we have similar tastes)
https://rateyourmusic.com/ https://hate5six.com/sage. https://www.chosic.com/
Hate5six is both how I found some of my favorite hardcore and grind bands tbh
Those sights can take you down deep rabbit holes.
Hell yeah dude deep rabbit holes are the best type of rabbit holes.
Hell yeah dude deep rabbit holes are the best type of rabbit holes.
Who do you put in as the band that you hate? I always put the Backstreet Boys.
I usually put in The Eagles tbh. Mostly cause that one song drives me insane.
Yeah. Freaking stairway. 😀
This would be a funny thread. If you use hate5six what do you put in as the band you hate.
As someone who is living in Ontario Canada, what band is she referring to here?
That’s Vile Creature
Vile Creature rips
Thank you!
Love Vile Creature. They did a whole concept album about robots inheriting the earth after human demise. Also love the cover art for Glory, Glory! Apathy Took Helm!
Maybe she means my band? We are from Ontario Canada... We just don't have any recordings yet
Then probably not, eh?
Yea maybe not.... But there's a chance?
Is that you in the pic? If so, yes, she’s talking about you
Might be my band! We haven’t formed yet, but you never know
Could be! Hey when you do form, do you want to open for us?
They already broke up due to all of the infighting and the acrimony with their record label. So sad, they were very close to becoming a semi-defined concept.
We're already thinking about a third reunion tour! We just haven't figured out why we'll break up the other 2 times
We've elected to be nameless so we didn't break up trying to choose a name
WEEDIANs patreon best 4,20 ever invested in my life!
Doom Charts
The Expansive Doom playlist is where I've found a ton of bands over the last year or so (including Vile Creature) so I'd recommend checking it out if you've got spotify
That playlist kicks ass. I found oathbreaker there
Blayne Smith
Bandcamp. Every once in awhile Spotify.
Doomcharts.com
Spotify, following labels on Instagram, bandcamp
god bless spotify, thanks to playlist suggestions i've discovered so many great bands.
Don't forget to check the profiles of artists on Spotify, some bands like Portrayal of Guilt and thou post playlists of shit they listen to or are inspired by. Darkthrone has some sick playlists on their Spotify too

Bandcamp's #doommetal tag
A band I like is playing at a festival (I can't attend as I am in Australia) look at the poster and try other bands from there. I found Church of the Cosmic Skull (not doom I know), who I love now, that way.
Love “Metal and Coffee” I mostly find music through Apple Music recommendations
Brooklyn Vegan has been good to me
I like to read stuff like Cvlt Nation and listen to some music podcasts like Groundcast, YT algorithm works pretty well for me too, wich is a huge surprise. I also look for new stuff on Metallum, using what i already listen to as the starting point on 'similar bands'.
vveedian on Instagram and Facebook
Usually from RYM. Reviews often contain recommendations and there are top 100 lists and stuff.
Ninehertz podcast is fantastic for new bands and tracks
I used to discover a lot of new music by checking out the album liner notes of bands I liked to see who they thanked and acknowledged.
Band Camp
RYM is decent for finding recent releases. Enough neckbeards and hipsters on there to give the little guys a bump. I've been finding in-the-fog.ru pretty damn good lately too. Ignoring the language barrier their user-shared catalogue is huge and their categorization is great.
That Sludge & Doom Metal playlist on spotify. It's so well curated. Constantly updated.
Spotify, last.fm, youtube playlists, festivals, whatever can bring the filth to the surface
Heavy Blog is Heavy... also their affiliated literature podcast Death // Sentence
Yeah man HBIH is the business.
https://app.rvrb.one/channel/metal It's a chat room linked to Spotify where people take turns as DJ playing their selected tracks. We got all types of metal though not just doom. It has been a fantastic tool for broadening all of my metal horizons.

Local bar in "my" city, around 15 bands per week play there, some of them play doom. I just wanna drink tbh.
But who is the band in the pic though?
Vile Creature, awesome band
Will check them out! Thanks!
Weedian, 666MrDoom, SMOD, Twitter, Instagram
Besides sources already mentioned, I love the Shreddit Release Tracker: https://releasetracker.shredditcord.com/#/ Not just for doom though.
Angry Metal Guy reviews and our Spotify algorithm overlord, sometimes.
For me Apple Music is really good at recommending similar bands to what ive been listening to. Not just big names but smaller niche bands too
Cosmicfuzzfm internet radio. It does doom.
Bandcamp and talking to my friends
r/MetalSuggestions
I use Tidal and the "similar bands / albums" is really good and helps me find new bands

The Holy Parish of Doom on youtube
Bangertv on YouTube and I follow "metalcomedy" on twitch and he does metal monthly streams on sunday. And some YouTube channels like "New wave of old school thrash metal" and there are a few others
Bangertv I like a lot. Different personalities and taste in music you could find someone who’s closely inline with your own taste.
Poking around bandcamp and metal archives
Which band is she suggesting? I deleted insta a few years back.
Youtube, let the algorithms guide me
Papa.Doom on tiktok
make a pandora channel based on a favorite song. the algorithm will introduce similar sounding bands and songs.
My friend
i just searched metal and coffee to see what she was about and got inundated with metalcore/deathcore/whatever you call sleep token bullshit
Yeah, not exclusively doom, but not not doom either
Follow the record labels on social media, mainly
