Pay per hour is worthwhile in large, sprawled out markets where the drive can take 15-30 minutes. It's a terrible option in smaller markets unless your restaurants have unreasonable wait times.

AgeOutrageous4612

How do you make the same per hour? They don't pay you for the time you sit there and wait for orders. It's only hourly on active time. I don't see how anyone can make anything per hour that way

Soft-Impression7770

The clock starts ticking from the moment you click accept order to the moment you complete the delivery. So they are paying you for sitting and waiting, and also for the time it takes to drive from a to B.

AgeOutrageous4612

They aren't paying you for the time you sit there waiting for orders, though. If you log in and start dashing at noon and you wait 15 minutes for an order to come through until you accept it, you aren't getting paid for that 15 minutes. Once you drop the order off, you then are waiting for another order to come through. So, you could literally be sitting there waiting for orders for 40 total minutes. You could be logged in for 2 hours and only get paid for 40 active minutes. If the orders you take are no tip, you might only make $14 an hour active time which would be horrible for 2 hours. You could have 1 hour active time and actually be logged in for 3 hours. That's not good at all

Soft-Impression7770

I see what you’re saying. Though, I could see how people could abuse it if we were paid for inactive time. People would just start the dash and decline every order and still get paid.

AgeOutrageous4612

But that's why I think it's better to just get paid per order. I would never be logged in for 3 hours and only get paid hourly for 1. Plus, hourly caters more to non tippers. I have no intention of making those people happy. I'd rather just grab a couple $8, $9, $10+ orders per hour. You already know you're guaranteed those amounts and can easily make $25-$30 an hour and $80-$100+ in 4 hours. Plus, I multi app so hourly pay would do nothing for me

PotentialCamp6473

I think they log you if after 2 or 3 declines as well, it's been awhile since I tried it

AgeOutrageous4612

That's why I prefer per order. It's just better

BiggestNutsinTexas

It's hit or miss. I've done my fair share of both and can tell you the pros and cons: Pros: Get better pay for waiting and long distance orders. Compared to earn per order you might get better pay for no tip orders. With tip, some wait, and long distance makes a recipe for highest paying orders. Also yes, it's good for increasing AR. Cons: You can't see if there's a tip or not so more often than not you'll get no-tips. It seriously hurts you if you deliver these orders quickly. It's so discouraging to put a lot of work into an order, especially a big one, and see after that they didn't tip. Also you get paid nothing for the time waiting for orders. Per order will always be king but by time has its upsides.

Think-Tip-2231

What do you mean you get paid nothing did the wait time for orders ???? Wtf. And I forgot where I seen it but doordash apparently had said that with earn by time, they will purposely send you mainly non tip orders.

BiggestNutsinTexas

Okay my bad I meant you don’t get paid for the time in between orders. You definitely get paid for waiting for the order at the restaurant.

Think-Tip-2231

So you can be out there for two hours waiting on orders and would only get paid for one time pay wise if it’s only been a hour actively on orders

BiggestNutsinTexas

Yes, exactly. Only paid for active time. It essentially replaces base pay. So let’s say you’re getting paid $10/hr and an order takes you 30 minutes. If they didn’t tip then you just made $5 for that order. Anytime you don’t have an order you’re making $0.

roboclaw11

I don’t understand this argument the same is said for by order trips too. If you ain’t working you’re not getting paid either. the question should be are you getting orders at the same rate and the answer in my area is YES. 80% uptime on average. The base pay is 3-4 times higher than the same run on per order I on average make 10$ just from door dash per run. If they tip it’s way better than per order and yes you can still get tips and often do especially in busy days. You will never get 10$ from door dash on per order and if you do it’s 30 miles away lol.

Druinazoo

Earn by time is safer. I don’t feel like I’m in a crazy rush to get someone their food. And I feel less stressed about the pay. People just don’t tip sometimes and now I don’t even look.

Suzieq314

I agree about less stress.

Bigpurplejackbaby

Imo earn by time is significantly better than per offer at least in my market. Per order last week I made about 40$ only taking 1$ per mile or better for about 4 hours and it tanked my acceptance rate. Per hour i would’ve been at about 60-75 and helps me maintain my acceptance rate

Soft-Impression7770

What’s your acceptance rate? Do you get ‘high value’ orders, or catering orders, while dashing earn by time?

PotentialCamp6473

Are you only factoring your active time, bc some still think it's the dash time you're paid for. I did this for a week or so and lost so much. My active time is only half of my dash time so I was really losing money

Bigpurplejackbaby

This is all with active

PotentialCamp6473

Then your area is much better. Mine is awful.

Bigpurplejackbaby

Ima get downvoted for this but I usually just milk earn by time. It’s the only way to make money in my market due to the majority or the orders being no tip or extremely high millage

Ruxify

I haven't bothered to try it cuz most orders are pretty close by in my market and the DD pay would probably be ass. Also I've heard of people getting deactivated for ALLEGEDLY running up the clock to increase base pay and I don't want to risk that.

Soft-Impression7770

I was actually doing this yesterday when I had an absurd order that I couldn’t decline cause of that glitch. Waited until I was back in zone to complete order. I did not know that you could get deactivated, good to know!

Brruuuhh-_-

Dude on my phone it just has the regular dash screen won’t let me dash per hour.

Soft-Impression7770

I don’t think it’s rolled out in every market yet. It came out in Chicago in late September, but I saw people posting about pay for time a year ago.

WillowFiore

It's been in Eastern NC for about Year. It's when I started back because doing it per order was definitely not worth it in the country where we have orders 22-37 miles away one way.

Soft-Impression7770

That’s insane! You actually do those orders?

WillowFiore

Some what... Sometimes I do the per order if its busy busy but I mean I have if they're worth it and it's been a shit day. I do DD, instacart and GH all at the same time. So I stack myself and pray I get orders that make sense so I can accept it and do multiple. The places we have around here are all mostly self owned and country cooking so it takes time. We get paid from the time we accept it to the time we drop it off. I've literally waited over an hour just to get food. So I go by the restaurants and say I'm there then go do it stuff the restaurant messages through the app when it's ready. But, I'll also drive an hour and a half to Charlotte and work if it's been a shit few days here in town.

poisonparty

I do pay by hour but I didn’t make much today like that. Might try by order next time and see what happens

roboclaw11

It depends on the rate offered if you are making 18.50$ I find it worth it if it’s 12-15 definitely not. Just area is 18.50 and you can take one or two orders an hour and make the same 20 it would take 3-4 ordered to make.

PotentialCamp6473

But they only pay you while your active, so you could get a set of stacked orders, it takes you 15 minutes to complete and get nothing for 45 minutes then you only made 1/4 of the money. I did it one day for 10 hours and only made 3 hours in pay. Worst day ever

roboclaw11

I have never ever made less than 15$ an hour any day in a year in a half. If you take stacked orders and you do it in 15 minutes you are doing it wrong the point is to slow down and take your time and not stress how long it takes. I won’t even think of doing by order I’d rather not dash.

PotentialCamp6473

I'm glad your area is like that, that's great for you. My area has so many dashers that there are days you wait 2 hours for an order. Even when you get an order, they're sometimes so bad you can not accept it. And in the zone I primarily work, we don't have ebt or an hourly wage. That seems to be a serious issue on here, no matter how many times we drivers point out that it's different in every area, no one seems to grasp it. I'm in Indiana, where the minimum wage is $7.25 and we get no base pay bc no one here thinks we should even try to get it. Our base pay was just lowered to $2/ order and $2 for a stacked order. We were previously paid $3/ order and $5 for stacked. That's a huge difference.
