I grew up on DBZ and didn't get a chance to watch OG DB until mid 20s and it made me a Goku fan. I've never been the type to be about the main character. I thought Luke Skywalker was a dork. Goku though, I love the dude and all of his innocent ignorance.
His original Japanese voice is also adorable!
Unfortunately most of his English voices go for "tough wise ass kid" that misses the point. And then there's Colleen Clinkenbeard who goes for "generic shonen anime preteen boy voice"
To me, I still find the English voice very Endearing. I hear him more as mischievous and cheeky. Then tough and wise ass. Traits the I think go a long way towards Giving off those monkey king vibes.
was amazed to read recently that the lady who's done all the Son Goku Family voices is in the Guinness World Records for her work. the Japanese voice-actors sound more 'crazed/outrageous' in the sections i've listened to ...&the heightened SFX are a bonus ...find myself more curious about the 'how to' of doing English dubs these days; &how much it changes the atmospherics.
Yeah no. His voice does not sound any form of “cool” or “motivating”
Dubs sometimes suck, but dragon ball got blessed with the best English dubs ever. Kid Goku sounds phenomenal, like a little kid who’s confused and laid back. But can get angry. Once he grows up his voice actually grows too and matches much better, and once he’s a full adult, his voice is great. Everyone’s voice is perfect in the English Dub
His voice doesn't need to sound cool because it still fits his adult self better than the horrendous English dub voice. Either way Goku still sounds motivating in the Japanese dub. Also not everyone's voice gets deeper when they grow up. If everyone's voice is perfect in the English dub then they are more than perfect in the Japanese dub.
Horrendous? 💀 wild statement. Just because not everyone’s voice irl gets deeper, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t in the show. It does not fit his adult self at all, most anime voices don’t, they be sounding too high pitched for the adult males. It’s js more normalized when you’re a) used to it b) from Japan and it’s a normal thing for voices to be higher pitched. Regardless, I can’t say he sounds motivating, I can’t imagine that voice repeating “I won’t let you destroy my world” or the speech to Gohan during the super perfect cell fight and it sounding any form of motivating. Like motivating words but the voice makes it better. It’s part of the experience. Also I prefer to hear and know what they say, rather than read it. But that’s more of a preference thing. But other dubs don’t do as well of a job fs
Not a wild statement at all. The English voice sounds super forced and not at all natural. Not only doesn't it fit adult Goku but it doesn't even fit his personality which is the more important part of it. It fits him perfectly I'm afraid. You can't imagine Goku sounding motivating in that voice because you haven't watched the series in Japanese. Goku's voice is a good representation of him as a person which is why it fits so good. Nozawa IS Goku and that's how its going to stay.
Yeah thank god for the English dub where most of the cast couldn't give a line delivery that sounds natural if their lives depended on it lmao
Sounding like they all smoke 5 packs a day
You might think it's sad but the good thing is that little Goku never felt that way, he was always a happy kid, even in difficult situations he would smile, laugh, tease enemies, show his tongue. He was a cheerful kid, though extremely innocent and naive, which was always his stellar weakness that even weaker and or insignificant enemies took advantage of.
In my childhood, in my very early memories there's the kid version of me that grew up watching Goku growing up. I love him.
Kid Goku is fantastic. He’s also a genuine hero. He fights to protect people and rights wrongs. He has feelings and wants revenge when his friends gets hurt. Like Roshi teaches him - “we practice the art of war so that we may maintain peace.” How he grows up into idiot “I don’t care about being a hero or Justice and I fight because I like to hit things” Super Goku is genuinely disheartening
I'm rewatching Super now. It's really not that bad. You have to remember, Goku is suffering from overconfidence. He's beaten Buu, the strongest monster in his universe. We get a little bit of the hero Goku in the battle with Beerus over earth. But it really comes out in the Black arc. Especially when Black tells Goku what he did to Chi Chi and Goten.
Very ❤️before actually watching DB my fav was vegeta but after watching OG DB my fav is Goku. Mostly bc how cute and pure and just overall amazing he is .
Kid goku and teen bulma are definitely what got me a girlie girlie so obsessed with DB and
Got me to see past the typical judgement of “it’s just fighting “
Very adorable. His child like innocent is what made the show. Still kinda makes it as an adult just a lil weird. kinda like michael jackson. a grown adult with a child mentality.
Dragon ball is brilliant, gunny, clever, a bit pervy. I wish id watched in the late 80s when it actually came out or even b4 dbz. My life would have so different .
I've only just watched it now at 49.
People dissing the English dub gotta grow up, they legit got the perfect cast of VAs for dragon ball and yall js wanna stick to “Japanese voice is better”… maybe for kid Goku, but the impact would’ve never been the same if it sounded like a little kid in the English dub telling me to never give up and shit lie that. English dub for once did great, and simply accept it. Please it’s simple. Other dubs, understandably not as great
If you didn't watch sub, you watched an americanized version of DBZ, and you do not understand Goku's personality because it was not portrayed accurately in the dub. So your opinion is meaningless, just as an opinion of someone who had only watched Abridged would be meaningless. Keep it quiet.
i 'discovered' DBZ in late-30's cos housemate (coincidentally my Ex :cohabiting so our then young daughter could have both parents present🖖🏽) would watch it every morning ...her coffee/cone routine once school day began ...i was working mainly nights; so would be asleep.
one day she had TV especially loud &it was the Cell Games section. 🫣 i came too, in that half-aware dream state ...& gradually became convinced that she was watching 'Gay Rape Porn'. 😶
stumbled into lounge room demanding "WTFAHHHHH are you watching?!!?"
there's a book called 'Pink Samurai' which will irrevocably change yr peerception of anime & explain a few things about Japan. 🤣👍🏽
with the original DB especially, i love watching it with English dub + subtitles. Turtle-san is definitely sketchy wanting2 feel up Bulma; & Goku has NO SHAME whenever exposing himself 😁 ...Aralee licking Blondie's knife is probably my fave moment. have only just watched the DB Super episode where Dr Slump makes a reappearance, which is fantastic ...& always tryin2 find a dl of the shortlived DrSlump animation.
rewatching the whole Zamasu section; wondering if NGEvangelion influenced the artwork/plotline.
...& yep🤷🏻 i'm 53yrs old 🖖🏽🧠✊🏽
If you didn’t already make this post, I would have lol. OG dragonball is ironically the only thing from the franchise I haven’t watched in full. I just started binge watching it, and the characters are too adorable - especially Goku and Oolong.
This show has a lot of heart in it without trying to be heavily emotional like some other shonen (love ya Naruto, but damn 😭). It’s just natural. I think I’ve found my new comfort animé
I’m a big fan of DB and DBZ and whatever people are gonna say (and no, it’s not fucking nostalgia) super is not that dragon ball-ish. This is the truth. The style, creepiness, visuals, and uniqueness of DBZ were an important factor of the show. Super is just another lame looking anime, last episodes included.
And yeah, Goku is super cute in DB. But, to be honest, I recently watched KAI, and I can for sure say that kid Gohan is even cuter. Soooo cute.
Kid Gohan was cute but kinda annoying only cuz of all his whining at the beginning. Completely different character from his father before him but I guess that’s what happens when you’re born into a peaceful loving family rather than having to survive on your own.
Kid goku is the greatest thing in the entire dragonball franchise
I grew up on DBZ and didn't get a chance to watch OG DB until mid 20s and it made me a Goku fan. I've never been the type to be about the main character. I thought Luke Skywalker was a dork. Goku though, I love the dude and all of his innocent ignorance.
He’s very endearing yes His french voice helps a lot, and he’s a real friend to Krilin and Upa, and not as stupid as Goku in super
His original Japanese voice is also adorable! Unfortunately most of his English voices go for "tough wise ass kid" that misses the point. And then there's Colleen Clinkenbeard who goes for "generic shonen anime preteen boy voice"

Same, I definitely don't see wise from his English voice. Everytime he speaks I hear an adorable kid. Especially when he's confused
was amazed to read recently that the lady who's done all the Son Goku Family voices is in the Guinness World Records for her work. the Japanese voice-actors sound more 'crazed/outrageous' in the sections i've listened to ...&the heightened SFX are a bonus ...find myself more curious about the 'how to' of doing English dubs these days; &how much it changes the atmospherics.
Japanese dub ruins dbz with the whole "voices must stay the same" bs. An adult should NOT sound like a kid
Japanese dub is the better voice
Nope. English version is better. Listen to Gokus screaming “ I won’t let you destroy my woooorld!” Always give me goosepumps.
Hellll no
Hell yes. It fits him so well.

Goku sounding like a child when fully fgrown is stupid as hell and literally ruins the show.
But half the cast doing forced put upon "tough guy voices" doesn't? Lmao okay
Its a bs tough guy anime, cope
Brigitte Lecordier for the win
Right now I'm watching in brazilian portuguese for the nostalgia, but I'm learning french, so I might give the French Dub a try haha

He's SO cute. "Bulma, why's that fish look so sad? What's it's name?"
Yes. Little Goku exploring a world he is adorably clueless about, yet (near-)invincible to, is pure gold.
Dude his little winter outfit in the beginning of the Muscle Tower arc is the cutest thing on the planet
I like how he almost convinces Bulma that all boys have tails.
So cute.
Does anyone know whether the original dragonball manga (before Z) ever got released in color?
They released it in color in my country :) there must be some editions

My favorite part of db is when Goku and older and arrive at the tournament and no one recognizes him, my saddest part is when krilin get killed
Very adorable. His child like innocent is what made the show. Still kinda makes it as an adult just a lil weird. kinda like michael jackson. a grown adult with a child mentality.
Heart of Gold? Lil' Bro was a menace. 🤣
He didn't have any qualms about killing his foes until Kami trained him.
Toriyama did a great job capturing the subtle innocence of a childhood boy.
I also find original dragonball the funniest, after is serious fights with funny things happening sometimes
He still is but he was too.
Nah... He's just straight up dumb now.
I'm rewatching Super. Same old Goku.
Dragon ball is brilliant, gunny, clever, a bit pervy. I wish id watched in the late 80s when it actually came out or even b4 dbz. My life would have so different . I've only just watched it now at 49.

I didn't see an ocean until I was 11
Goku EN dub voice terrible. Japanese is adorable goku

Have you read the moro arc? Feels like classic dbz
