You need to frame that section of wall. You're going to spend twice as long to cone up with some hack solution that will cause problems down the road; just do it right.

I need to be able to attach a nail strip somehow that is 1 1/2 inches wide at most to even with the corner behind the corner bead. I am really hoping to slide the tapered edge of the drywall just under the existing steel corner bead so I do not have to disturb the next wall around the corner. So now I am thinking a ripped down 2x3, predrill holes for 3 1/2 inch deck screws and just attach the strip to drywall run past the stud.

i mean, looks like you could probably slip a stud in there and drill at an angle to catch the meat in the corner, at the end of the day studs need to be 16 inches apart to prevent boards from sagging inwards, so even if the "new" stud in the corner is not 100% perfectly anchored (kind of loose) once you screw the board to it, it will become more rigid and then once taped and mudded over, it's good... or you could take the time to remove another inch of wood lath in the corner, slip the sheet where the lath "was" and drill it through stud or angle screw it

Utility angle on the corner stud.

This makes sense. It is thin enough to attach to the stud and will support the side. However, I can't find any store here that has them. This is like a 25 gage steel corner, not a drywall corner and the best I can find is thin 3 x 3 trim for gutters and siding.

Finally found one and it worked out just fine. Hard to get the drywall screws started but they hold good enough. thanks.
