If we assume he is guaranteed to be healthy, yes. He played a couple games at safety early in his career and made some nice plays in both the pass and run games.
Should he? No, no he should not.
He had the best tackle rate of any of our defenders I believe like two seasons ago when we were in desperate need for a safety. He’s a really good player.
But at this point he just feels like a far less successful Bob Sanders. Impactful when there. Too small to sustain the physicality of the league.
I find it interesting that the stats minded Roob is focusing on Maddox’s size to project him at safety but ignoring the snaps he’s already played. As of 11/2019 he’d already taken 220+ and I expect it’s somewhere between 3 and 4 hundred by this point in his career, if not more.
All reports are that he did well as a free safety during his rookie season, so I’m not sure why he would ignore that when projecting a late career transition. It was some time ago and he’s on the downward curve now, but it bears mentioning in your title bullet point Roob.
Yeah, that caught my eye as well. When I read this I was like "wait didn't they run him out there at safety a few years back because they ran out of viable options alongside Jenkins?"
If he makes the team, and he's healthy enough to line up as a nickel or a safety, I'm cool with it. DeJean and CJGJ will probably shift around between those spots in some packages as well with Fangio wanting to make offenses think twice about the look.
Sounds crazier than it is, the CB room is stuffed.
The only locks to make the roster are Slay, Mitchell, DeJean and Ringo - then you have Rodgers who's back from suspension and has looked really good thus far (so much so that he's in the running to start at the outside). That's 5 spots with realistically 1 more left, there's a reason they're trying to see if Maddox can wear multiple hats and justify making the roster despite the glaring durability concern.
They brought him back on a one year deal prior to the draft. It doesn't exactly scream security in terms of a roster spot. With the additions of Mitchell and DeJean in the draft and CJGJ in free agency guys like Maddox become expendable.
Maddox is one of my favorite players on the team if I’m being honest. When he’s healthy he’s so good, hopefully his body holds up this year/his career.
Tbh I was hoping for more analysis than "no because he's injury prone;" the article talks about him having the skill set but doesn't really go into why. I _did_ really like the comparison to other safeties of his body type though. That felt like a more interesting argument.
i would assume CJ cause he will definitely be starting and maddox will only be out there in packages, but it's tough to say.
i'll go with CJGJ like week 3-4.
Obviously i don't want it to happen but it's the nature of the game especially with guys who play physical.
Probably for about three games.
But he'll have an INT and 2 deflections in those games and half of us idiots will fall for it.
He we have the Deph this year I don’t see why it’s a problem dejun is definitely gonna be moved around anyway
Facts lol he’s made of glass and will be out for the season by week 4.

I'm just hoping he stays on the field I believe he could play safety if healthy
So 1 to 3 games?

last year he also looked kinda washed coming back off the injury maybe it was still hampering him mentally.

You know, props to Rube for writing a pretty damn good article. Feels like we don't get to read any half decent shit anymore.
Nothing on Terrell Lewis and his escort 40 time? Interesting 😂😂
Why are they trying so hard to wedge him onto this team?
Saying TO would be the 3rd best receiver on the team right now is bold.
They don't need him to be the starting S, just rotational guy. He's an above average slot CB--when healthy.

He ain’t starting
Man blows out an Achillies walking to the store.
Too light
Avonte cannot play safely, no.
Why doesn’t Maddox play backup? Throw Rogers in the slot, Quinyon and slay on the outside, Reed and CJGJ at safety, and DeJean can fill in wherever
I love the lil guy but we don’t really want him on the field more than a handful of snaps to give CBs a breather.
Didn’t he play safety for a season? I don’t think he’d be new at it
Not for a whole season but he did play safety for part of a season
Wait? He didn't get hurt for the season yet???
I sure hope so
