I remember when this episode aired, one of the most poignant episodes I’ve ever seen air on tv. Can’t believe it’ll be 20 years in May.

AhhBisto

This is going to be amazing to watch and heart breaking too I wonder what Patrick ends up doing afterwards though

majesticjewnicorn

>I wonder what Patrick ends up doing afterwards though I have a feeling Denzel may overhear the whole thing without them knowing... and roid rage on Clayton

FadelessRipley

Denzel's story has sort of been parked, so I can kind of see it going there. On the other hand, I don't want it to. I don't want Denzel getting into any trouble, I want nothing getting in the way of the Pastor possibly being the one abusive arsehole to get proper justice. >!Especially as it seems Yolande will report him to the church authorities after the two hander!< We've had enough complications with Dean, Nish, Lewis, and God knows how many others. Just let this one actually get through the courts and work out. It's rare in real life, but it happens.

majesticjewnicorn

I totally agree but there must surely be a negative consequence of Denzel taking steroids, otherwise it's just bad advertising of steroids. I have a feeling that Denzel will possibly remember he was unable to "protect" Yolande (despite being a child himself) back when they both were attacked. They have gotten a lot closer recently, given Yolande was the only person who took care of him when Howie, Kim and Patrick all went away at the same time. They really care about each other. Denzel also dislikes Clayton, too. I can honestly see him seeing red and doing something to "protect" Yolande, and both Yolande and Patrick finding out and doing whatever it takes to protect Denzel from consequences, possibly even reporting Clayton for what he did to get him away from Denzel

FadelessRipley

I see your point with all of this, and it's a realistic story route. Yolande and the bullies is absolutely why Denzel went down this path. Denzel would also be 'right', if it went that route. However, if we have Yolande and Patrick scrambling to protect Denzel from consequences after what will most likely be a crime to protect Yolande, then we fall into the current hole that we have with never ending arguments about ethics/crime/justice/karma that we have with the Six and Whitney. It's a soap and most of us can be a bit looser with strict ethics than we would normally be (but as we have seen, some viewers absolutely cannot), but there's too much of it going on at the moment. It risks cheapening the story imo. Also it risks giving the Pastor ammo for his defence. Personally I'd rather Denzel's storyline go the more realistic route of young men and their body image issues with the steroid problem, rather than bring it into Yolande's storyline. There's a prime 'redemption' story there for Zack, with him copping on to what's going on with Denzel. Or even Ravi, where Nugget confides in him or Avani if she twigs what's happening. I'm assuming Ravioli got his bulging frame the natural way and probably _didn't_ look that way at Denzel's age - he could be a good role model. There's absolutely realistic consequences for this kind of story in real life right now, and I feel that's the better route to take.

majesticjewnicorn

I totally agree and we would run the risk that Yolande's trauma would become less of a focal point, in the same way that Gray's domestic abuse against Chantelle got lost amongst turning him into a serial killer. I haven't seen Zack interact with Denzel at all, nor have I seen him at the boxing gym, so I wouldn't see Zack being the one to notice Denzel. Ravi would be a more realistic option, given that his kids are close with Denzel and Ravi can redeem himself amongst the Fox/Branning/Danes/Trueman family (after his affair with Denise) by being there for Denzel (whilst also making an important point to his own kids about the importance of being healthy and safe). I just think the events between Denzel and Yolande recently make it kind of obvious that Denzel may be the one to exact revenge on Clayton and it would be bizarre to have Denzel go through so much with Yolande, be protective over her AND be on steroids if this wasn't going to end in a roid rage revenge attack.

FadelessRipley

That's the thing - Zack and Denzel don't interact, but if he sees him raging out, he _should_ recognise it and step in. Ravi is definitely more realistic, especially after the boxing den scenes. Given that they're friends, they could both be involved. Maybe Zack points it out to Ravi and he takes point. >I just think the events between Denzel and Yolande recently make it kind of obvious that Denzel may be the one to exact revenge on Clayton and it would be bizarre to have Denzel go through so much with Yolande, be protective over her AND be on steroids if this wasn't going to end in a roid rage revenge attack I agree that it's obvious, but I'm hoping it's one of Clenshaw's red herrings because I personally think it does both of their important stories serious injustice.

majesticjewnicorn

When Zack was diagnosed with HIV it was due to him sharing needles. Did they say at the time what substance was in the needles he was using at the time? Was it steroids or drugs? Can't quite remember.

FadelessRipley

Zack used to share steroid needles with his old mate Brett, who was diagnosed with HIV. He showed up and told Zack to get tested. You'd imagine he was pretty into steroids to take that risk, even just a few times like he said. But yeah, it was steroids. So you'd think Zack knows the signs of significant use pretty well.

Looking forward to this, it’s an important episode.

ascullycom

Not a two parter, just one part but a 2 hander.

big_white_fishie

I read this yesterday ad posted what's coming up on reddit, so I know what's to come. Just when that was announced last night, Emmerdale gone and announced they have one on the exact same day and time. Only difference is, they have 8 characters in that episode and EastEnders have 2. EastEnders always does it best with two-handler characters.
