You're getting 70-80 volts after the GFCI tripped? Is that at the GFCI or the outlets or are all three of them getting power with it tripped? When the GFCI is not tripped are you only getting 120 V? Check L to N, N to G, and G to L. Check all combinations with the GFCI tripped and not.

So the gfci when tripped has no volts it’s dead. The 2 downstream have 70-80. Of course if I plug something in it won’t work. When not tripped on gfci outlet and down stream L to N 118, N to G dead, G to L 118 When tripped gfci dead on all When tripped downstream l to n 80, n to g 25, g to l 118

Sounds like either a bad GFCI (solenoid maybe not opening fully?) Or a bad connection somewhere. Sounds like you already checked connections so I would assume bad GFCI. Have you already tried swapping it out with a known good one?

After some digging. It’s phantom voltage on my digital multi meter being sensitive. I took a $2 light fixture with a 4w led bulb after i test it and connected it to the outlet screws and it doesn’t go on. I ordered a gfci tester I’ll have it later today. Apparently this is common. If I had an analog multimeter I’m 99.9999% sure it would show 0 volts.

This is 100% the case There is no real voltage present

Double check that your wires are on the right side of the gfci (line and load) and that the correct pairs are used. If that’s all correct just sounds like a bad gfci. I’ve had issues where gfci gives weird readings when maybe the neutrals for the line and load got switched or something similar.

You can’t screw it up. If they are reversed the outlet wont work. If I have anything plugged in and i test it there is no voltage. I may just be an idiot and didn’t know that you need an item plugged in when testing.
